In the 32-stock portfolio reviewed by CNBC Investing Club, the five-week period from the Sept. 10 monthly meeting to the comparison close produced a sharp split: CrowdStrike, Meta Platforms and TJX Companies led the listed gains, while Bank of New York, Goldman Sachs, FedEx Freight and Boeing suffered the largest declines. The moves reflected a market favoring selected artificial-intelligence and value stories while punishing interest-rate, fuel-cost and cyclical risks.
What the five-week comparison measures
This is a portfolio-specific snapshot, not a ranking of every U.S. stock. The baseline is the CNBC Investing Club’s Sept. 10, 2026 monthly meeting, and the review was published Oct. 15 using the closing prices available for its comparison window.
Market performance helps explain the divergence. The Nasdaq gained 2.3% between the meeting and the comparison close, while the Dow lost nearly 1%. In the week through Wednesday’s close, the Nasdaq fell 2.5% but the less technology-heavy Dow was flat. A hot inflation report, expectations of at least one more Federal Reserve rate increase before year-end and concern about debt-financed AI infrastructure made investors more selective about growth exposure.

CrowdStrike: cybersecurity as AI capability raises threat concerns
Investors treated the rapid improvement of AI models as a reason to spend more on protecting networks and data. Concern about what increasingly powerful systems could enable helped lift demand expectations for cybersecurity, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for frontier AI laboratories to slow model development added urgency to that debate.
#1 Best Overall
The company had already more than doubled during the year, however. That extended run makes the latest jump vulnerable to profit-taking and increases the risk of chasing momentum rather than evaluating future growth at the current valuation.
Meta Platforms: new AI products could widen revenue beyond advertising
Meta’s gain followed the Sept. 8 launch of its Muse personal AI agent and releases of Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full. The products raised the prospect of paid subscriptions and coding-tool revenue that could complement the company’s advertising business.
Wells Fargo said Muse Wonder Full had reached the “AI frontier,” ranking among the industry’s most advanced models. That assessment helped investors view the launches as potential platforms for monetization rather than simply another set of experimental features.

TJX Companies: value retail and merchandise flexibility support the rebound
TJX rebounded after an August earnings sell-off tied to concern about slowing comparable sales at Marmaxx, its largest division. A Morgan Stanley survey pointed to consumers pulling back spending more broadly, but TJX’s off-price model gives it two defensive advantages: shoppers can trade down to lower prices, and the company can buy excess merchandise when other retailers need to clear inventory.
Those characteristics support the longer-term value-retail thesis even while near-term sales trends remain an important test.

Bank of New York and Goldman Sachs: rates cloud the financial outlook
The Federal Reserve’s September rate increase intensified concern that higher rates would raise funding costs, weaken loan demand and slow mergers, acquisitions and initial public offerings. Those mechanisms affect both custody and investment-banking businesses, so the stocks fell even though the reported quarters contained positives: Goldman delivered solid earnings, while Bank of New York posted better-than-expected fee growth.
Rank #3
The contrast shows why a stock’s short-term performance may diverge from the latest income statement. Investors were discounting the effect of a potentially less favorable pipeline and financing environment rather than simply rewarding or penalizing the quarter that had just ended.

FedEx Freight: fuel and freight demand are the immediate watch points
Higher diesel prices linked to the ongoing Iran war put pressure on freight economics. The broader transportation signal was weak: the iShares Transportation ETF fell 3% and J.B. Hunt fell 13% from the prior meeting. For FedEx Freight, the key questions are whether shipping demand holds up and how effectively the business controls costs if fuel remains elevated.
Boeing: fuel, aerospace execution and a 737 Max software issue
Boeing faced a combination of higher fuel costs, broader aerospace-industry concerns and a software problem affecting certain 737 Max aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration determined on Oct. 2 that the software issue did not pose a flight-safety concern, removing a potential certification obstacle.
Rank #4
That regulatory finding did not eliminate the commercial pressure. Airlines still face weaker profitability when fuel rises, and sustained pressure on airline finances can affect aircraft orders, deliveries and production planning.

AI exposure versus defensive and value exposure
CrowdStrike and Meta benefited from a narrative that AI is creating new security needs and new software revenue. TJX offered a different form of resilience through lower-price merchandise and flexible sourcing. The common thread was a credible way to benefit from, or withstand, uncertainty without relying solely on a strong economic expansion.
Interest-rate sensitivity
Financial companies were more exposed to the prospect of higher funding costs and a slower deal market. Rate expectations also pressured the broader technology-versus-defensive rotation, especially as investors questioned how much borrowing the AI build-out can support.
Best Value
Fuel and operating-cost sensitivity
Transportation and aviation businesses absorb fuel costs directly or indirectly. That makes their earnings more vulnerable when diesel and jet fuel rise, even if volumes have not yet collapsed.
Company-specific and regulatory risk
Boeing’s software issue illustrates how an individual operational or certification concern can overwhelm wider market trends. The FAA’s clearance reduced one risk, but it did not resolve the fuel and demand issues affecting the sector.
Momentum is not the same as future return
The listed percentages describe what happened in this portfolio window. They do not establish a forward-return forecast, and the source does not provide one. CrowdStrike’s year-to-date doubling is a specific reminder that a strong recent move can increase the cost of entering late.

How to read this snapshot
- Use the Nasdaq-Dow gap as context, not as proof that every technology stock will outperform.
- Separate an earnings result from the market’s expectations for the next financing, demand or cost cycle.
- Check whether a catalyst is company-specific, such as a product launch or regulatory decision, or reflects a broader factor such as rates or fuel.
- Treat the five-week moves as descriptive portfolio history, not investment advice or a promise of what comes next.
