On most Samsung laptops running Windows, press Windows+Shift+S to capture part of the screen, or press Windows+PrtSc to save a full-screen screenshot. If you want video, try Windows+Shift+R to open Snipping Tool’s video capture on supported Windows versions.
How do I take a screenshot on my Samsung laptop?
Choose a shortcut based on whether you want a selection, the whole screen, or the active window. Keyboard labels and Fn behavior vary by model, so if a shortcut does not work, use Snipping Tool.

Capture part of the screen with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose a capture mode available in the overlay: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- Select or capture the content you need. The image opens in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, annotate, or save it.
Snipping Tool also includes Text actions for extracting text from a capture. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for the current options and settings.
Capture the whole screen or active window
Press PrtSc to copy the full screen to the clipboard, then paste it with Ctrl+V. To save a full-screen image directly, press Windows+PrtSc; Microsoft identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the default location. For just the active window, Samsung documents Alt+PrtSc and, on the laptop configuration described in its instructions, Fn+Alt+PrtSc. If that window shortcut fails, choose Window mode in Snipping Tool instead.

Samsung’s support page describes the Fn-key combinations and clipboard behavior for Windows 10 and 11: Samsung screenshot shortcut guidance. Microsoft lists the full-screen shortcuts and alternate hardware-key option: Microsoft Print Screen shortcuts.
Where are my screenshots saved?
A capture made with PrtSc or Alt+PrtSc may be on the clipboard rather than saved as a file. Open Paint or another app and press Ctrl+V to check; then save the image from that app if needed.

For a full-screen screenshot saved with Windows+PrtSc, look in Pictures > Screenshots. Recent Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to Screenshots according to Microsoft, but the automatic-save setting and default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool Settings. You can also open a capture in Snipping Tool and choose Save as to select another location. The applicable Windows 10 and Windows 11 options are described on Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support page.
How do I record my screen?
On supported Windows versions, press Windows+Shift+R to open Snipping Tool’s video capture overlay. Select the area to record, start the recording, and stop it when finished. You can save the video or edit it in Clipchamp. Feature availability can vary with Windows version and updates; Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation covers its current capture features.

Samsung Screen Recorder availability
Samsung says its Screen Recorder app is available only on Windows 11 Galaxy Book4 and Galaxy Book5 PCs running One UI 6.0 or later. On an eligible device, search for “Screen Recorder” from the taskbar, open the app, and select the red Record control. Samsung’s Screen Recorder support page lists this eligibility. If your Samsung laptop does not meet it, use Snipping Tool’s video capture if it is available on your Windows installation.

What if the screenshot shortcut does not work?
- PrtSc appears to do nothing: It may have copied the image to the clipboard. Paste into Paint or another app with Ctrl+V.
- You cannot find a PrtSc key: The label may be PrtSc, PrtScn, or part of a combined key. Some keyboards require holding Fn. Microsoft also documents Fn+Windows+Space for devices without a PrtSc key.
- You need a crop or annotation: Use Windows+Shift+S and edit the result in Snipping Tool.
- A recording option is missing: Try Snipping Tool’s video capture if your Windows version supports it. Samsung’s separate Screen Recorder has the model and software restrictions above.
- A particular app or protected video will not capture: Capture behavior is not guaranteed for every application or protected content. Check the application’s own help for capture restrictions.
