You can reduce your dependence on Amazon Alexa and Google Home without throwing out every smart device or giving up voice control. A local-first controller such as Home Assistant can run in your home and store smart-home data locally; whether each device works without internet depends on its integration and features.
What changes when your smart home runs locally?
With a local-first setup, a controller runs on hardware in your home and communicates with compatible devices over your home network or a local radio protocol. Home Assistant describes its approach this way: “Home Assistant runs on your own hardware in your home, and your data is stored locally.” Home Assistant privacy FAQ
Local control can reduce reliance on a manufacturer’s cloud for everyday actions, but it is not an all-or-nothing guarantee. The device, its Home Assistant integration, and the feature you want to use all matter. A light may be controllable locally while a vendor-specific feature still depends on the vendor’s app or servers.

How to move gradually instead of starting over
- Make an inventory. List each smart device, its current app or hub, and the functions you rely on. Note whether it needs a cloud account and whether it still responds when your internet connection is unavailable.
- Look up the device’s Home Assistant integration. Check its connection method and supported controls before buying a replacement or assuming an existing device will become local.
- Choose a controller and any required radios. Home Assistant Green is the company’s plug-and-play hub recommendation for most users. Other listed installation paths include Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, and virtual machine, which may suit people who already have suitable hardware or want a different setup. The software is free; hardware and optional services are separate. Home Assistant Green
- Add one room or device category first. Verify that local control and the features you care about work reliably before expanding the setup.
- Keep familiar voice control if useful. Home Assistant can expose compatible devices to Alexa or Google Home, allowing a gradual transition rather than an immediate break with existing voice interfaces. Those integrations still require internet. Home Assistant offline FAQ Home Assistant Alexa integration Home Assistant Google Assistant integration
What Home Assistant does—and does not—make local
Home Assistant can run locally, but some optional services and connections are online-dependent. Its offline FAQ says Home Assistant Cloud features such as remote access, as well as its Google Home and Alexa integrations, require internet. That means local device control and remote access are separate considerations: a compatible device may work inside the home during an outage even when remote control and cloud-linked voice functions do not. Buying a hub does not convert cloud-only products into local devices. If an existing product only offers cloud access, you may need to keep using that service, accept that it will be unavailable during an outage, or replace it with a device whose integration supports local communication.

Matter is designed to support local control, but compatibility is still device- and feature-specific. Look for the Matter logo and confirm that the functions you need are supported by the relevant Home Assistant integration. Matter may expose fewer device-specific features than the manufacturer’s native integration. Home Assistant Matter integration

Thread is a networking technology, not proof that a product supports Matter. For Thread-based Matter devices, you need a Thread border router; check both that requirement and the product’s Matter support before purchase. Home Assistant identifies Connect ZBT-2 as an optional accessory for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter, but an accessory is only relevant if your chosen devices and setup need those protocols. When it makes sense to keep Alexa or Google Home
You do not have to remove Alexa or Google Home to make progress. If household members depend on voice commands, keep the existing interface while moving compatible devices to a local controller, then expose those devices to the voice assistant as needed. The trade-off is that the linked voice integration remains internet-dependent, according to Home Assistant’s offline FAQ. Home Assistant offline FAQ
