If Tailwind Typography styles are showing up on a component inside an article, the usual cause is selector scope: the component’s rendered HTML is still inside the prose subtree, so matching elements receive prose styles. Start by making content-like components fit the article’s typography; use element modifiers for region-wide adjustments, and reserve not-prose for UI that should be visually independent.
Why prose styles reach component markup
@tailwindcss/typography supplies typographic defaults for vanilla HTML content, such as HTML rendered from Markdown or a CMS. You put a prose class on a wrapper, and the plugin styles matching elements beneath it. The browser sees the resulting HTML tags; it does not treat a tag differently just because a reusable component emitted it.
For example, an anchor in an in-article call to action remains an anchor inside the prose subtree. It can receive the same prose link treatment as an ordinary article link. That is generally expected behavior, not evidence of a plugin defect: the styles are applying to matching descendants in the region where prose is meant to operate. The Tailwind Typography announcement describes the prose wrapper and element-specific modifiers.

Use the least disruptive remedy that matches what the embedded markup is meant to be. A content-like element can usually share the article’s visual language; a custom UI island may need to opt out.
#1 Best Overall
| Remedy | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fit the component to prose | The embedded element is content-like and can share the article’s design. | The component remains part of the prose presentation. |
| Use prose element modifiers | A consistent change is wanted for an element type throughout the content region. | The change affects that element type across the region, not just one component. |
Apply not-prose |
A substantially different UI island should not receive prose styling. | The island leaves the prose styling system; current package guidance says prose instances cannot be nested inside it. |
Tier 1: Make content-like components fit the article
When a component belongs naturally in the article flow, adapt its styling to the surrounding typography instead of fighting the prose rules. An inline affiliate link, for instance, could be bold and underlined in the article accent. A call-to-action button could use a light background, dark text, and an accent border. These are design approaches, not independently tested usability results.
This option is most useful when the embedded item should look like a deliberate part of the article rather than a separate application interface.
Tier 2: Tune a type of element across the prose region
If the adjustment should apply consistently to a kind of element throughout the content area, use a Typography element modifier on the prose wrapper. The official announcement demonstrates prose-img:rounded-xl, prose-headings:underline, and prose-a:text-blue-600. A modifier such as prose-a:… targets links as a class of elements, rather than one embedded component alone.
Choose this when the article’s overall treatment of that element type needs to change. If only one component needs a different look, a region-wide modifier may affect more than intended.

Tier 3: Exclude a genuinely custom UI island
Use not-prose when a component is substantially different from article content and should not inherit prose treatment. Tailwind Labs describes the intended case as adding non-content HTML in the middle of content and wrapping it with not-prose so prose styles do not interfere. See the official announcement and the current package README.
Treat this as an exclusion, not a selective tweak: the island is outside the prose styling system. The current README notes that new prose instances cannot currently be nested inside a not-prose block. If the component needs prose styling restarted within that excluded region, check the current package guidance before choosing this approach.

When a utility override seems ineffective, check Tailwind v4 layers
Selector scope and CSS cascade order are different problems. If a component’s markup is inside the prose subtree, prose selectors can match it. Separately, a Tailwind CSS v4 cascade-layer conflict can make an intended override appear ineffective even when its selector seems appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn a Tailwind Labs discussion from 2024, a user described trouble overriding Typography styles while retaining utility overrides. Maintainer Philipp Spiess explained that the CSS in question was outside a layer while plugin-generated utilities were in the utilities layer, and recommended putting the override in the same layer so it would not take over utility precedence. That discussion concerns cascade ordering; it is not a general fix for prose selectors matching component descendants.
Best Value
Because the discussion is specific to Tailwind CSS v4, verify the installed Tailwind and Typography versions before adopting exact layer syntax. When styles do not behave as expected, inspect both whether the element is inside the prose scope and which cascade layer contains the relevant rules.
