Tailscale’s Personal plan is listed at $0 for personal, non-commercial home use, so it can be a free way to reach a home lab remotely. It is not a like-for-like replacement for a consumer VPN that routes general internet browsing through a VPN provider. The stated $120 annual subscription and any resulting savings are an individual account, not a typical price or a saving verified here.
Is Tailscale free for home-lab access?
Yes. Tailscale describes its Personal plan as intended for people using Tailscale at home, and its pricing page lists it at $0, free indefinitely. The plan is for non-commercial personal use; check the current terms and plan details before relying on it. Tailscale pricing
As listed on October 7, 2026, Personal includes up to 6 users, unlimited user devices, up to 3 ACL groups, and up to 50 tagged resources to start. These are plan limits, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every configuration. Tailscale says plan features can vary, and its April 8, 2026 changelog describes unlimited user devices across plans. Tailscale changelog Tailscale plan-upgrade documentation
What Tailscale replaces—and what it does not
Remote access to your own network
Tailscale’s home-lab guidance describes a WireGuard-based encrypted mesh network for connecting devices. It lists examples such as a NAS, Plex server, Pi-hole, Raspberry Pi, and home security camera, and says users can access them remotely without port forwarding or complex router configuration. Those are Tailscale’s product claims; they are not independent findings about performance, security, or setup time. Tailscale home-lab guidance

General internet browsing through a VPN provider
A home-lab network and a commercial consumer VPN serve different purposes. The cited Tailscale material supports private access to your own devices and services; it does not establish that Tailscale offers feature parity with a service designed to route general web traffic through a VPN provider. If you used the old subscription for that broader purpose, replacing it with Tailscale alone may leave that need unmet.
How to decide whether the free plan fits
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| What do you need to reach? | Personal devices and home-lab services fit the use case Tailscale describes. General internet browsing through a VPN provider is a different purpose. |
| Is the use personal or commercial? | Tailscale says Personal is for non-commercial home use. Business or work deployments should be checked against current business plans and terms. Tailscale terms |
| Does the plan cover your setup? | Compare your users, devices, ACL groups, and tagged resources with the current Personal plan limits on Tailscale’s pricing page. |
| How is remote access configured? | Tailscale says its home-lab approach avoids port forwarding and complex router configuration. That is vendor guidance, not a measured comparison with your previous setup. |
What the $120 figure means
The $120 annual amount is part of the account described in the headline; it is not established as a typical VPN price. Tailscale’s $0 Personal price is a current listed plan price, not proof of the amount any individual saves. To state a net saving as a documented personal result, the old bill and cancellation record would need to support it, and any remaining costs would need to be accounted for.
