Short answer: Choose a Tailscale exit node when you want your own home or office connection to be the Internet gateway, private access to a tailnet, and identity-based control over who can use it. Choose a commercial VPN when you want the simplest setup, many public locations, and a provider to operate the gateways. Neither is universally faster or more private: the decisive variables are who controls the exit, whether Tailscale traffic is direct or relayed, the exit location, and how much maintenance you accept.

What you are comparing

These options solve related but different problems. A Tailscale exit node is a device you or your organization controls. After a client opts in, that device forwards the client’s non-Tailscale Internet traffic, making its network connection the public egress. The same tailnet can also provide private access to approved devices and services.

A commercial VPN is a provider-operated gateway service. You install an app, sign in, choose a server or location, and send traffic through infrastructure maintained by the provider. You normally do not manage the server hardware, upstream connection, software updates, or address pool.

Both can create an encrypted tunnel from your device. The important difference is the trust boundary: with Tailscale, your selected exit device and its Internet provider are the gateway; with a commercial VPN, the VPN company is the gateway.

How a Tailscale exit node works

Full-tunnel routing for non-Tailscale traffic

Tailscale’s exit-node feature routes all traffic that is not destined for the tailnet through the selected device. Tailnet traffic remains handled by Tailscale’s private networking, while ordinary web, app, DNS, and other Internet connections leave through the exit node’s network.

Every client must explicitly opt in to an exit node. Local-network access is disabled by default when using one; a client can enable local-network access if it needs to reach printers, NAS devices, or other services on its current LAN.

Supported platforms and prerequisites

  • Tailscale documents exit-node support for Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and tvOS.
  • The documented prerequisite is Tailscale version 1.20 or later on both devices.
  • The exit device must stay powered, connected, and able to forward traffic whenever clients depend on it.
  • An owner or administrator must approve the advertised exit node and grant users permission to use it.
  • If you have customized access-control policies, they need an autogroup:internet grant for Internet routing through the exit node.

Who can see what

Tailscale says the tunnel is end-to-end encrypted with WireGuard and that, when you use your own exit node, Tailscale cannot see your public Internet traffic. The selected exit device can observe the traffic that passes through it in the same broad sense that a home router or office firewall can, and the upstream ISP can observe the connection from that device to the Internet. Tailscale’s destination logging for exit-node traffic is disabled by default; Enterprise tailnets can enable destination logging for network-flow visibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not make an exit node anonymous. Websites still see the exit node’s public IP, and the exit operator remains a trust point. If another person administers the device or its network, you are trusting that person or organization rather than a VPN company.

How commercial VPNs work

A commercial VPN terminates your encrypted connection on a provider server and forwards your traffic to the Internet. The provider chooses the available locations, operates the servers, handles capacity planning, and usually supplies optional privacy controls such as a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and protocol selection.

Proton VPN documents WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 support, along with a kill switch. Its published audit announcement says the examined server infrastructure showed no logs of browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, traffic contents, or user-identifiable connection metadata. That is evidence about the audited infrastructure and period, not a mathematical guarantee about every future system.

Mullvad states that it does not log activity, commissions independent audits, operates under Swedish law, and includes a built-in kill switch that stops traffic if the VPN connection fails. Those are provider statements; evaluate them alongside the underlying policy, audit scope, jurisdiction, and technical implementation.

A commercial VPN therefore trades direct control for convenience. You are not responsible for keeping an exit server online, but the provider can see the gateway-side relationship and controls the infrastructure that carries it.

Privacy comparison: which is more private?

Privacy question Tailscale exit node Commercial VPN
Who operates the Internet gateway? You, your employer, or another tailnet administrator operating the selected device. The VPN provider operates the gateway servers.
Can the coordination service read payload traffic? Tailscale says it cannot inspect the end-to-end encrypted public traffic sent through your exit node. The provider terminates the VPN tunnel, so its systems are part of the gateway trust boundary.
What does the ISP see? The ISP serving the exit device sees that device’s Internet connections; your client’s local ISP sees an encrypted connection to Tailscale rather than the final destinations. Your local ISP sees an encrypted connection to the VPN service; the VPN provider’s upstream networks carry the onward traffic.
Who controls logging? The exit-device operator controls local router, firewall, operating-system, and diagnostic logs. Tailscale destination logging is off by default, with an Enterprise option to enable it. The provider controls gateway logging. Policies and audits indicate what it says it does and what an audit examined.
What public IP do websites see? The exit node’s public IP. The selected VPN server’s public IP.

If minimizing trust in a third-party gateway is your priority, a properly administered personal exit node has a clear advantage: you control the machine and the network contract. If you need independent evidence about a provider’s retention practices, a commercial VPN with a detailed policy and published audits may be easier to evaluate than a personally managed device whose logs and firmware you must inspect yourself.

Speed and latency: what determines the result

There is no defensible universal speed winner in the available primary-source material. Tailscale’s performance guidance says, “Direct connections nearly always result in lower latency and higher throughput” than relayed connections. That is a transport principle, not a cross-provider benchmark.

Variables that affect a Tailscale exit node

  • Direct versus relayed transport: A direct path usually avoids an intermediate relay. A relayed path adds distance and processing overhead.
  • Exit location: A home exit node on another continent can be slower than a nearby commercial server, even if the home connection is fast.
  • Upstream capacity: The exit site’s upload speed limits downloads to clients, while its download capacity limits uploads from clients.
  • Hardware and configuration: CPU performance, network-interface settings, operating-system tuning, and firewall rules can become bottlenecks. Tailscale recommends Linux kernel 6.2 or later for best Linux performance.
  • Concurrent users: Streaming, backups, and several clients sharing one exit compete for the same connection.

Variables that affect a commercial VPN

  • Server capacity and current congestion.
  • Distance between you, the VPN server, and the destination.
  • The VPN protocol and encryption implementation.
  • Your ISP’s route to the provider and the provider’s route onward to the destination.
  • The number of other customers using the same gateway or address pool.

Measure the specific paths you intend to use. Test the same device, destination, time of day, and protocol with the exit node enabled and disabled, then repeat with the commercial VPN. Record latency, download and upload throughput, packet loss, and stability rather than relying on a single speed-test result.

Android deserves a specific warning: Tailscale describes Android userspace routing for exit nodes as “not performant” and potentially too slow for most cases. A commercial VPN app may be the more practical Android choice when sustained throughput matters.

Setting up a Tailscale exit node

Before you begin

  • Choose a device with a reliable wired or wireless connection and enough upstream bandwidth for the users you expect.
  • Install Tailscale 1.20 or later on the proposed exit device and on each client.
  • Confirm that the operating system is supported. For Linux, use kernel 6.2 or later when possible.
  • Decide whether clients must also reach the exit device’s local LAN. Local-network access is off by default.
  • Ensure you are the tailnet owner or have an administrator who can approve the device and change access policy.

Advertise and approve the device

  1. Install and sign in to Tailscale on the device that will provide Internet egress.
  2. In the Tailscale client, enable the option to advertise the device as an exit node. The exact label varies slightly by operating system.
  3. Open the Tailscale admin console and approve the newly advertised exit node. An advertised device is not necessarily usable until an owner or administrator approves it.
  4. Review the tailnet access policy. With a customized policy, add an appropriate autogroup:internet grant so permitted users can use Internet routing.
  5. On each client, open the exit-node selector and choose the approved device. The client must opt in separately; approval does not force every device to use it.
  6. Verify the result by checking the client’s public IP and testing access to any required tailnet and local-LAN services. If local devices are unreachable, enable local-network access on that client only when needed.

Maintenance and failure planning

Keep the exit device patched, powered, and connected. Monitor its CPU, memory, bandwidth, and uptime if several users rely on it. Tailscale notes that key expiry can leave advertised routes visible while the device is no longer reachable, so manage key-expiry settings and renew credentials before they interrupt service.

Have a fallback plan for a household or office outage. A second approved exit node can provide continuity, but clients still need to be switched to it. Remember that moving the exit node also changes the public IP and geographic location seen by websites.

Setting up a commercial VPN

  1. Create an account with the provider and install its current app for your operating system.
  2. Sign in, select a nearby server or a specific country, and connect.
  3. Enable the kill switch if you do not want applications to fall back to the ordinary ISP connection when the tunnel drops. The exact name and behavior vary by provider.
  4. Choose a protocol when the app exposes that setting. WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 have different compatibility and performance characteristics.
  5. Check the public IP, DNS behavior, and access to services you use. Some streaming, banking, or corporate services may challenge shared VPN addresses.

This workflow avoids server administration, policy editing, and hardware maintenance. In exchange, you must trust the provider’s operation, jurisdiction, logging policy, and audit disclosures.

Side-by-side decision table

Reader priority Better fit Reason
Use a home or office public IP Tailscale exit node The egress device is selected by you and can sit directly on the private network.
Reach private tailnet services while traveling Tailscale exit node The same identity-based network can provide private access and Internet egress.
Fastest managed-device path Tailscale when direct; otherwise test Tailscale says direct connections nearly always have lower latency and higher throughput than relays, but hardware and geography decide the outcome.
Many public locations without maintaining hardware Commercial VPN The provider supplies and operates gateways in its published locations.
Minimize trust in a third-party gateway Self-controlled Tailscale exit node You choose the machine and network that carry the public traffic, while still trusting their administrators and ISP.
Simplest installation Commercial VPN Account creation, app installation, server selection, and connection are usually sufficient.
Evaluate privacy through external evidence Commercial VPN with published audits Provider policies and independent audits offer documents to examine, although they are not absolute guarantees.
Android throughput with minimal tuning Commercial VPN Tailscale warns that Android exit-node userspace routing may be too slow for most cases.

Common problems and fixes

The exit node does not appear for clients

  • Confirm the device is advertising an exit node rather than only participating as a normal tailnet client.
  • Ask the tailnet owner to approve it in the admin console.
  • Check the access policy for an autogroup:internet grant when custom rules are in use.
  • Update both devices to Tailscale 1.20 or later.

The client connects but has no Internet access

  • Check that the client has explicitly selected the exit node.
  • Verify that the exit device is online and has ordinary Internet access.
  • Look for an expired key or a device that is shown as advertised but unreachable.
  • Inspect firewall, routing, and DNS settings on the exit device and its upstream router.

Local printers or NAS devices stop working

Local-network access is disabled by default when an exit node is active. Enable the client’s local-network access option if you need those devices, then retest. Restrict this exception to trusted networks and devices.

Performance is unexpectedly poor

  • Determine whether the path is direct or relayed.
  • Measure the exit site’s upstream bandwidth and CPU load.
  • Move the exit device geographically closer to the clients or destinations when possible.
  • On Linux, use kernel 6.2 or later and review network-device configuration.
  • On Android, compare against a commercial VPN because Tailscale documents userspace exit-node routing as not performant.

A commercial VPN works, but a service blocks it

Shared commercial VPN addresses are widely recognized and may trigger additional verification or blocking. Try another provider server or protocol, or use a personally controlled exit node when the service permits access from your home or office address. Neither approach guarantees access; the service owner controls its policy.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Do you need your own public IP, or merely a different public location?
  • Can you leave an exit device powered and patched continuously?
  • Who administers that device and its router?
  • Will Android users or high-bandwidth workloads depend on it?
  • Do you need many countries, or only one trusted home or office location?
  • Would a provider policy and independent audit be more useful to you than control of physical hardware?

If the answers favor control, private-network access, and a known egress, start with Tailscale. If they favor convenience, broad location choice, and no hardware responsibility, start with a commercial VPN. For sensitive work, evaluate the complete trust chain—client device, tunnel software, exit gateway, ISP, logging, jurisdiction, and destination—rather than treating either product category as automatically anonymous.

FAQ

Is a Tailscale exit node the same as a VPN?

It provides VPN-like full-tunnel routing for a client, but the service model is different. The exit is a device in your tailnet that you control or administer, not a shared gateway supplied by a VPN company.

Can Tailscale see the websites I visit through my exit node?

Tailscale says it cannot see public Internet traffic sent through your own exit node because the traffic is end-to-end encrypted. The exit-device operator and its ISP remain able to observe the gateway-side activity, subject to their equipment and logging.

Will a Tailscale exit node always be faster than a commercial VPN?

No. Direct Tailscale paths usually outperform relayed paths, but the exit device’s bandwidth, hardware, location, and ISP route must be compared with the commercial VPN’s server capacity and congestion. The available primary sources do not establish a universal speed statistic.

Can I use an exit node only for selected apps?

The documented feature is client-level routing of non-Tailscale traffic. Application-specific split tunneling is a separate capability and depends on the operating system and configuration; do not assume that selecting an exit node automatically provides per-app controls.

What happens if the exit device goes offline?

Clients using it lose that Internet path until they switch to another approved exit or return to their normal connection. Key expiry can produce a similar state in which routes remain advertised but the device is unreachable, so monitor both connectivity and credential status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using a commercial VPN hide my traffic from my ISP?

Your ISP can generally see that you are connected to a VPN service, but the tunnel obscures the final destinations from the ISP. The commercial VPN provider becomes the gateway trust point and can observe what its own systems handle according to its technical design and logging policy.

Should a family use one home exit node for everyone?

Only if the home uplink, device, and administrator can support the combined demand. Streaming, backups, and multiple clients share the same upstream capacity; monitor usage and keep a second option available for outages.

Is a Tailscale exit node suitable for a business?

It can be, when the organization can manage device approval, access policy, patching, key expiry, monitoring, and administrator trust. Enterprise tailnets can enable destination logging for network-flow visibility, which should be addressed in the organization’s privacy policy.
