Yes—you can make a traveling laptop, phone, or tablet use your home internet connection by running Tailscale on an always-on device at home, approving that device as an exit node, and selecting it on the traveling device. Websites then see the home device’s public IP address, while the traveler’s ordinary internet traffic is carried through the encrypted Tailscale connection.

What a Tailscale exit node actually does

An exit node is a device on your Tailscale tailnet that forwards another device’s public internet traffic. Tailscale installs the default routes 0.0.0.0/0 and ::/0, so traffic that is not destined for another Tailscale device exits through the selected home connection.

This is different from a subnet router. An exit node provides internet egress; a subnet router advertises selected private networks so you can reach devices such as a home printer or NAS that do not run Tailscale. You can use both roles together.

What you need before leaving home

  • An always-on home computer, server, or other supported device with reliable power and internet service.
  • Tailscale version 1.20 or later installed on the home device and each client that will select it. Tailscale lists Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and tvOS as supported exit-node platforms.
  • A Tailscale tailnet and an account permitted to approve devices.
  • A valid authentication key and a plan for keeping the home device powered and connected while you travel.

Set up the home exit node

  1. Create or use your Tailscale tailnet, then install Tailscale on the home device and on each traveling device.
  2. On the home device, enable the setting to advertise it as an exit node.
  3. Open the Tailscale admin console and approve the advertised device. An Owner, Admin, or Network admin can approve it.
  4. On each traveling device, open Tailscale and select the approved home device as its exit node. Selection is per device; choosing it does not automatically configure every other tailnet member.

If your tailnet uses a customized ACL or grant policy, it must grant internet access through autogroup:internet. Allowing access only to the exit-node device does not by itself authorize use of that device as an internet gateway.

What changes on the traveling device

Websites see the home connection

Public websites generally see the public IP address of the selected exit node. That can make services treat the connection as originating from your home region, although each service can apply its own geolocation, account, or fraud checks.

Public Wi-Fi traffic uses the home path

With the exit node selected, the client’s public internet traffic travels through the home device instead of directly through a café, hotel, or airport network. Tailscale documents untrusted Wi-Fi as an exit-node use case. This does not make the local Wi-Fi network disappear: it remains the physical link to Tailscale, and the home endpoint must remain reachable.

Local-network access is a separate choice

A client using an exit node does not automatically retain access to the local network it is currently connected to. Turn on Tailscale’s Allow LAN access option when you also need the hotel, rental, or other nearby LAN. That setting concerns the traveler’s current local network, not discovery of devices on your home LAN.

Reach printers, NAS devices, and other home-LAN equipment

An exit node alone is not a general home-network discovery mechanism. A home device must run Tailscale itself, or a subnet router must advertise the private subnet containing the printer, NAS, camera, or other equipment. Use subnet routing when the destination does not support a Tailscale client. Exit-node routing and subnet routing address different traffic and can be combined.

Keep the route reliable and avoid leaks

The home endpoint needs continuous power, working internet service, and a valid authentication key. If a connector key expires, Tailscale leaves the advertised route configured but makes it unreachable—a fail-close behavior intended to prevent traffic from silently falling back to an untrusted network.

  • Before departure, confirm the home device is on a stable power source and can reach the internet.
  • Check the device’s Tailscale status and key-expiration settings.
  • Test exit-node selection from an external network, not only from inside the home.
  • Have a recovery plan if the home router, modem, or host loses power.

Tailscale states that destination logging is disabled by default for traffic flowing through an exit node across all tailnets, for privacy, abuse, and security purposes. Your home internet provider and the services you visit can still observe traffic at their respective ends, so an exit node is not a guarantee of anonymity.

Per-device setup or a travel router?

Installing Tailscale on every device gives the most direct control. A Tailscale-compatible travel router is useful when several devices—especially televisions, game consoles, cameras, or work equipment—cannot install Tailscale individually. The router joins the tailnet and sends the traffic of its connected clients through the home exit node.

Using a Tailscale travel router

GL.iNet identifies the GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) as an AX3000 pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 travel router with Tailscale support. Its documented workflow is to configure a home desktop with a public IP as the exit node, then configure the GL-MT3000—or another supported GL.iNet router—to send traffic through that node. Devices connected to the router can then use the home public egress without individual Tailscale installations.

GL.iNet describes the router’s Tailscale feature as beta. Its guidance warns that simultaneous use with OpenVPN Client, WireGuard Client, GoodCloud Site to Site, ZeroTier, or AstroWarp can create routing conflicts. Check the exact model and firmware support before relying on a router for a trip, and disable overlapping VPN or overlay functions when troubleshooting.

Performance and practical limits

An exit node is not a speed guarantee. No independent throughput, latency, or uptime benchmark for this travel scenario is established here. Real performance depends on the home upload speed, the travel connection, device hardware, protocol overhead, and the physical distance between you and home. A distant home connection can add noticeable latency even when both internet links are fast.

Common failure cases

The exit node is missing from the client

Confirm that the home device advertised the route and that an Owner, Admin, or Network admin approved it in the admin console. Also check that the client and home device meet the version requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The node is selected but internet traffic does not work

Review the tailnet ACL or grant policy and ensure it permits autogroup:internet. Then verify the home host’s power, internet connection, and authentication-key validity.

Home devices cannot be found

Install Tailscale on the destination device or configure a subnet router for its private subnet. Selecting an exit node alone does not advertise every home-LAN address.

The router behaves unpredictably

Check firmware and model compatibility, then look for simultaneous OpenVPN, WireGuard, GoodCloud Site to Site, ZeroTier, or AstroWarp configurations that may be competing for routes.
