There is no single realism winner. Choose Arma Reforger for the deepest military-simulation systems, Squad for realistic large-unit combined arms, Ready or Not for procedure-driven SWAT engagements, Insurgency: Sandstorm for immediate and highly lethal infantry gunfights, and Gray Zone Warfare for an evolving open-world extraction sandbox.
The right answer depends on which layer of realism matters to you: projectile behavior, weapon handling, time to kill, movement and stamina, suppression, sound, mission scale, or how stable the current build is.
What “realistic gunplay” actually measures
Realism in a tactical shooter is not one slider. A game can model bullets convincingly while simplifying movement, or demand authentic communication while using forgiving weapon handling. Compare these seven layers separately:

- Weapon handling: How aiming, recoil, reloads, optics and attachments behave. A screen-centred reticle can hide a simplified model; muzzle-based aiming exposes the weapon’s actual orientation.
- Lethality: How many hits are required and how quickly a player can be incapacitated. Realistic lethality often means very little time to react, not a longer health bar.
- Movement and stamina: Whether sprinting, fatigue and posture alter accuracy and decision-making.
- Suppression and information: How incoming fire affects vision or steadiness, and how much you can infer from sound, maps and communications.
- Scale and mission structure: Whether the game models a room-clearing procedure, a fireteam, or a 100-player combined-arms battle.
- Version stability: A mature ruleset is easier to judge than an Early Access build whose ballistics and health systems are being rebalanced.
These criteria explain why two players can name different games while both are using “realistic” accurately.

Arma Reforger: the strongest military-simulation answer
Why its gunplay feels authentic
Arma Reforger is the clearest choice when “realistic” means a military sandbox rather than a quick competitive match. Bohemia Interactive’s Steam listing calls it an authentic Cold War military sandbox and specifically names highly realistic weapons, detailed ballistics, map-and-compass navigation, and recreated Cold War weapons and vehicles. Those systems make shooting part of a larger field problem: you must orient yourself, identify a position and coordinate movement instead of relying only on a minimap.
The combination of ballistics and navigation is important. A weapon can be modeled in isolation, but the need to read a map and compass changes how you acquire targets, choose routes and estimate distance. Multiplayer, co-op and single-player options let the same systems serve different group sizes, while extensive mod support can add scenarios and equipment beyond the base Cold War setting.
Who should choose it
Pick Reforger if you want deliberate positioning, military equipment and a sandbox in which navigation and communication matter as much as trigger speed. It is also the best fit for players who want to experiment with scenarios or mods rather than repeat a fixed set of short rounds.
What its label does not prove
“Detailed ballistics” is a documented feature, not a published real-world accuracy test. The available listing does not provide a common penetration chart, measured dispersion study or universal time-to-kill figure. Treat its position as the strongest documented military-simulation fit, not proof that every weapon behaves identically to its real counterpart.
Squad: realism through scale, communication and combined arms
The battlefield context
Squad occupies the middle ground between an arcade shooter and a military simulation. Offworld’s Steam description specifies 100-player matches, organized as 50-versus-50 battles, with combined arms and base building. That scale changes what “good gunplay” means: a rifleman’s success may depend on a squad leader’s orders, a vehicle crew’s support or a logistics player’s ability to establish a forward position.

Faction-specific weapons and Picture-in-Picture scopes are explicitly part of the game’s presentation. The result is less about tuning a lone loadout and more about using the equipment of your faction inside a coordinated force. Long sight lines, suppression from several directions and the need to communicate contacts make information management a core part of shooting.
Who should choose it
Choose Squad when you want realistic military teamwork without committing to a single-player sandbox. It suits players who enjoy voice communication, organized fireteams and the combined-arms problem of infantry, vehicles and bases. Someone seeking a detailed solo ballistics laboratory may find its main strength—large-scale cooperation—less relevant.
How it differs from Arma Reforger
Reforger emphasizes a flexible Cold War sandbox with map-and-compass navigation and modding. Squad emphasizes structured, 50-versus-50 battles and the decisions that emerge from a full team. Both support military realism, but they ask you to practice different skills.
Ready or Not: the most realistic room-clearing choice
Penetration changes every doorway
Ready or Not models a modern SWAT environment rather than a battlefield. Its Steam page says players equip real-world weapons and gear, and that bullets from known and concealed threats can pass through walls, furniture and bodies. That penetration behavior removes the assumption that a thin barrier is safe. A suspect behind cover, a hostage in the next room and a teammate in a fatal line of fire all affect the same shot.
Rules of engagement are part of the weapon model
The game’s realism is procedural as much as ballistic. You select a squad, breach rooms, identify threats and follow rules of engagement. The stated consequences for squadmate and hostage deaths make target confirmation a tactical requirement, not an optional role-playing detail. A fast entry that wins a gunfight but harms a civilian is still a failed operation under the game’s logic.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Who should choose it
Choose Ready or Not if your mental image of realism is methodical room clearing: slicing corners, communicating sectors, managing doors and deciding when force is justified. It is a weaker match for someone who wants open terrain, vehicles or a broad military campaign, because its scenarios are built around SWAT procedures.

Insurgency: Sandstorm: the most immediate realistic infantry gunplay
Muzzle-based aiming and researched weapons
A September 13, 2021 Xbox Wire developer feature explains that the muzzle—not the centre of the screen—determines bullet direction. Scopes magnify only the portion seen through the optic, and the weapons and attachments were researched and modeled. This makes stance, weapon alignment and optic use visible in ordinary firefights instead of leaving them as hidden simulation values.
Stamina, suppression and reload decisions
Stamina loss increases weapon sway, so repeated sprinting directly degrades your next shot. Suppression increases sway and obscures vision when fire comes close, making incoming fire useful even when it does not hit. The same feature notes that unfinished magazines are retained after reloads, turning the choice between a quick reload and conserving ammunition into a practical decision.
Lethality and sound
“Time to kill in Insurgency: Sandstorm is very low – one or two shots is usually all it takes,” according to the developer feature. That threshold rewards cover, first-shot accuracy and disciplined movement rather than prolonged health-bar exchanges. Sound supplies the other half of the information model: players can infer footsteps from material and floor, identify weapon types, estimate whether gunfire is indoors or outdoors and determine direction.
Modes and match structure
Focus Entertainment lists four PvP modes, three PvE modes and 14 maps. The range supports both competitive firefights and cooperative play, but the moment-to-moment loop remains faster and more infantry-focused than a 100-player combined-arms simulation.

Who should choose it
Pick Sandstorm when you want realism you can feel every second: muzzle alignment, rapid lethality, stamina-linked sway, suppression and directional audio. It is the most direct answer to “Which tactical shooter has the best realistic gunfights?” for players who value immediate infantry action over campaign-scale simulation.
Gray Zone Warfare: an evolving open-world extraction sandbox
What makes it distinctive
Gray Zone Warfare is a PvE-first, open-world tactical shooter released April 30, 2024. Its extraction structure places gunfights inside a persistent-feeling space where travel, looting, medical decisions and the risk of losing progress influence how aggressively you engage.
Why every realism judgment needs a build date
The game is in Early Access. Its Steam page warns that the experience is incomplete and may change, while current update notes list rebalancing to ballistics, core movement, sound design and health. The same update information lists more than 380 weapon parts. Those details show an ambitious equipment model, but they also mean a recoil pattern, injury response or audio cue observed in one build may not remain unchanged.
Who should choose it
Choose Gray Zone Warfare if you prefer exploration and PvE-first extraction stakes and are comfortable with ongoing development. Do not buy it solely for a permanent claim that it has the most realistic ballistics; its core systems are explicitly still being revised.
Which game is most realistic for your definition of realism?
If you mean military simulation
Start with Arma Reforger. Its documented combination of detailed ballistics, realistic weapons, map-and-compass navigation and Cold War equipment most directly matches that definition.

If you mean large-unit warfare
Choose Squad. The 50-versus-50 structure, faction weapons, combined arms and base building make communication and coordination the realism test.
If you mean SWAT procedure
Choose Ready or Not. Wall and furniture penetration, rules of engagement, tactical breaching and consequences for hostages and squadmates all shape the correct shot.
If you mean fast, lethal infantry handling
Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm. Muzzle-based aiming, stamina, suppression, sound and one-or-two-shot lethality are continuously present during a firefight.
Recommended Free Tools
If you mean an evolving extraction world
Choose Gray Zone Warfare only if Early Access changes are acceptable. Its open-world PvE-first design is the differentiator, while its ballistics and health behavior remain version-sensitive.
How to test realistic gunplay for yourself
Use the same checklist in each game rather than judging a single dramatic clip:
- Fire from the hip and through an optic. Check whether the muzzle, reticle and optic view agree, and whether the scope magnifies only its intended field.
- Test a hard barrier. Shoot through a wall, piece of furniture or body where the game permits it. Record whether the round penetrates, changes effect or stops.
- Measure movement cost. Sprint, stop and fire immediately; then repeat after recovering stamina. Compare sway and recovery rather than assuming a faster sprint is free.
- Expose yourself to suppression. Observe whether near misses alter vision or weapon steadiness, not just health.
- Listen before looking. Identify footsteps by surface, weapon type and indoor or outdoor report. A game that supplies directional information rewards a different skill from one that marks enemies on screen.
- Repeat at several ranges. Close-range lethality can conceal differences that appear at distance. Use the same weapon class and stance when comparing.
- Check the build date. For Early Access titles, record the patch or update before treating a behavior as a stable feature.
Audio is part of the realism equipment
In Insurgency: Sandstorm, the developer specifically describes cues for footstep surfaces, weapon types, indoor versus outdoor fire and direction. A gaming headset with positional audio can therefore expose information the game intentionally models. This is not a claim that any particular headset was tested or is universally superior; it is a reminder that stereo direction and clear separation matter when sound is a tactical input.
Access and version caveats
Release dates and feature descriptions identify the versions discussed here: Arma Reforger (November 16, 2023), Squad (September 23, 2020), Ready or Not (December 13, 2023), Insurgency: Sandstorm’s cited design feature (September 13, 2021), and Gray Zone Warfare (April 30, 2024). Storefront availability, territory, edition and platform support can change, so verify those details before purchase. The comparison is about documented game systems, not a claim that one title reproduces every real-world firearm or tactical procedure exactly.
