Start with the route, not the tower. Trace where enemies enter, where they must reach, and which corners, intersections, and chokepoints keep them exposed. Put one dependable damage tower where it can fire for the greatest total time, then add roles that answer the next wave: splash damage for groups, single-target damage for durable enemies, and slow or other control to extend everyone’s firing window. Upgrade with a specific problem in mind, preserve a legal route to the objective, and reassess after every round. That method works across most tabletop tower-defense systems even though the exact tower draws, merges, costs, and turn structure vary.
What makes tabletop tower defense different?
Tabletop tower defense (TD) turns the familiar defend-the-base loop into a physical game of routes, tokens, cards, dice, tiles, or miniatures. You spend a limited pool of resources to place defenses, survive an enemy wave, collect the resulting income, and improve the board before the next threat. A compact description of the economy is Place → Defend → Earn → Upgrade → Repeat: defeated enemies finance the next tactical decision rather than ending the game’s pressure.
The principles are portable, but the procedures are not identical. Tabletop TD systems may use random tower draws and merges, so your ideal plan must adapt to what you actually receive. Ten Acre Games’ Tabletop Tower Defense rules are deliberately flexible: they are described as a complete rules framework that can be implemented in different systems or settings. Treat the advice in this guide as a decision method, not as a fixed build order that overrides your game’s rulebook.

Mark the four critical locations
- Enemy entries: note whether enemies arrive from one direction or several. Multiple entries reduce the value of a tower that covers only one lane.
- The protected objective: identify the castle, base, or target that ends the game when too many enemies reach it. Count how much warning you have before a token arrives.
- Repeated-exposure sections: a bend, loop, or legal maze can make an enemy pass near the same firing position more than once. These sections usually offer more coverage time than a straight edge.
- Intersections and chokepoints: a tower here can cover multiple possible approaches, but check whether the rules allow construction on that space and whether enemies can attack it.
Do not evaluate a location by its printed range alone. A weapon’s useful value combines its range, shooting speed, and damage. A high-damage tower that sees an enemy for one brief step may contribute less than a modest tower that fires on the same enemy through several spaces or turns.
Measure coverage time
For each candidate position, follow a typical enemy token and count the attacks it can receive while inside range. Include both the first pass and any later pass created by the route. This simple count helps compare positions without pretending that one tower has a universally best percentage or ratio.
| Board feature | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Corner | Often keeps a target in an arc while it turns | Can the tower cover both sides of the bend? |
| Intersection | May reach two or more route choices | Does the tower’s range actually overlap each branch? |
| Long straight | Provides predictable exposure | Is there a safer position with equal or greater time? |
| Chokepoint | Concentrates enemies for splash or control | Can enemies bypass it, and can they attack a tower placed there? |
| Objective approach | Last chance to remove leaks | Will a defensive reserve still have time to fire? |
Place the first tower for reliable damage
Choose one dependable damage source before buying specialized effects. “Reliable” means the tower can fire often enough, on ordinary targets, from a legal position that is unlikely to become irrelevant when the route changes. Confirm its range and attack timing in the rules before committing resources.
- Trace the most likely first wave. If the wave composition is hidden, use the position that covers the greatest route time rather than gambling on a narrow counter.
- Compare two or three legal spaces. Prefer the space with broad or repeated coverage, then use safety and future expansion as tie-breakers.
- Place the tower and record what it can reach. Mark the route segments in range so you can see whether later construction improves or accidentally removes coverage.
- Reserve enough resources for a response. Spending the entire opening pool can leave you unable to answer a second entry, a fast unit, or an unexpected draw.
Route shaping can be powerful: partial funneling or a short maze may make enemies spend longer under fire. However, the Defendion manual warns that if every path is blocked, enemies may try to destroy the weapon blocking them instead of simply walking around it. Keep at least one viable route under the game’s movement rules, and check whether a proposed wall exposes a valuable tower to direct attacks.
Build a complementary defense, not a pile of identical towers
Most beginner losses come from solving one target profile repeatedly. A useful defense assigns different jobs, then combines those jobs at the point where enemies spend the most time.

| Role | Best against | What to evaluate | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-target damage | Durable enemies, bosses, or priority targets | Damage per second, range, and ability to focus one target | Using it alone against a large crowd |
| Area or splash damage | Swarms and tightly packed units | Blast size, attack frequency, and friendly-fire rules | Buying it when enemies are spaced too far apart |
| Slow or control | Fast units and mixed waves | Duration, affected area, and whether control stacks | Placing it where enemies pass too quickly to benefit |
| Support | Strengthening nearby defenses or economy | Buff range, uptime, and opportunity cost | Spreading support so no damage tower receives its benefit |
Answer the next wave’s actual threat
- Many weak enemies: add splash or another effect that scales with targets in one area. A single-target tower can remain useful for cleanup, but it should not carry the entire wave.
- One or a few durable enemies: add focused damage and place it where the target remains visible for multiple attacks. A slow effect is valuable when it converts missed shots into additional attacks.
- Fast enemies: prioritize slow, stun, path shaping, or any legal control that lengthens the approach. Put damage immediately after the control zone so the extra time is converted into hits.
- Mixed waves: retain one answer for the majority threat and one answer for the exception. Do not dismantle a functioning counter merely because the next wave also contains a small number of another type.
Use a simple upgrade-versus-new-tower test
There is no universal rule that upgrades always beat expansion. Compare the immediate survival gained per resource with the coverage a new role would add.
| Choose an upgrade when… | Choose a new tower when… |
|---|---|
| The tower already covers the longest or most valuable route segment. | A missing role is causing the current leak, such as no area damage against a swarm. |
| A damage, range, or attack-speed increase changes how many shots a target receives. | The existing towers cannot reach a second entry or route branch. |
| The next wave has the same profile as the threat you just observed. | A control or support effect would multiply several existing towers’ output. |
| The upgrade is affordable while retaining a reserve for emergencies. | One overworked tower is being asked to handle incompatible target types. |
A practical spending sequence
- Identify the specific leak or near-leak from the last wave.
- Ask whether increasing an existing tower’s damage, range, or firing rate fixes that problem.
- If not, select the cheapest legal addition that supplies the missing role.
- Check the following wave’s likely composition before spending the remainder.
- Keep a small reserve when draws, merges, or enemy entries are random; certainty is lower in those systems.
Avoid distributing small upgrades across every option. A half-improved collection can leave all towers below the threshold needed to remove a durable target or thin a swarm. Concentrate resources until one clear weakness is repaired, then broaden the defense.
Shape routes without creating a new vulnerability
When the rules permit walls, tiles, or blocking placements, treat route construction as an exposure tool rather than a goal in itself. A good shape sends enemies through overlapping fields while leaving your towers out of easy attack range.
Use partial funnels
Close one unattractive branch or lengthen a turn, but preserve an open lane that enemies can legally follow. Aim to make the route predictable enough for your towers, not so constrained that the board’s enemy behavior changes from movement to attacks on the blocker.
Layer effects along the route
Place control before damage when the control effect increases time in range. Put splash at the point where enemies cluster, and reserve focused damage for the exit or for targets that survive the area effect. This ordering converts route length into actual damage instead of merely making the path look longer.

Protect the construction itself
Some systems let enemies target defensive weapons or structures. Do not put your only damage source in the square an enemy must destroy to continue. If a tower becomes a target, add distance, another legal lane, or a backup position before investing in further upgrades.

Manage the economy as a repeating loop
Resources from defeated enemies are both your reward and your timing constraint. A strong opening that leaves no funds for the next response can fail one wave later, while excessive saving can allow avoidable leaks.
- Before a wave: reserve the amount needed for the most probable counter, then spend the remainder on the position with the highest coverage gain.
- During a wave: observe which enemies survive, where they leave range, and whether control effects are creating meaningful extra shots.
- After a wave: convert the result into one purchase decision: repair the failing role, improve the best coverage position, or prepare for the announced threat.
- When draws or merges are random: value flexible pieces and avoid a plan that works only if one particular tower appears immediately.
Track resources in the same units your rules use—coins, cards, energy, or another currency—and write down the cost and result of each purchase for the first few games. You are looking for your system’s breakpoints: the point at which an upgrade removes one extra enemy, reaches a second lane, or lets a control effect overlap a damage zone.
Adapt to random draws, merges, and flexible rules
In a fixed-choice system, you can plan a sequence such as damage first, splash second, and control third. In Tabletop TD variants that use random tower draws or merges, plan by function instead of by name.
Draft by role
When a draw offers several pieces, first ask which job is absent. A weaker area tower may be the correct choice if the board already has focused damage but no answer for a swarm. Conversely, a duplicate damage tower can be correct when a durable target is the immediate threat and the new piece can share the existing high-coverage position.

Merge only when the timing is favorable
A merge that creates a stronger tower can also remove coverage from two spaces or consume a piece needed for a missing role. Merge when the resulting piece will fire enough additional attacks, gain a decisive range, or free a placement that improves the whole route. Delay it when the current board needs two separate firing angles.
Translate principles across rule frameworks
Ten Acre Games presents its rules as complete yet flexible, so groups may alter components, settings, or implementation details. Before importing a build order, verify movement, blocking, targeting, income, and upgrade timing in the version you are playing. The route-time and role principles remain useful, but a cost or turn sequence from one implementation should not be assumed in another.
Read the board after every round
Reassessment is where a beginner plan becomes a repeatable strategy. Use the same short audit after each round or wave.
- Locate the first leak. Identify the exact route segment and enemy type that escaped the intended kill zone.
- Separate damage from positioning problems. If a tower never had the target in range, move or replace it; if it fired repeatedly but the target survived, improve damage or add support.
- Check concentration. Confirm that splash is meeting groups, control is applied before the main damage zone, and support reaches the towers that matter.
- Inspect the next threat. Use the announced or likely composition, not the previous wave alone, to choose the next purchase.
- Record the result. Note the resource spent, the number of enemies that survived, and whether the change improved coverage time or target handling.
Troubleshoot common beginner failures
“My first tower is busy, but enemies still reach the objective.”
Follow one surviving token frame by frame. If it spends little time in range, relocate the tower to a corner, intersection, or repeated-exposure section. If it remains in range and survives, add focused damage or an upgrade that increases attacks during that exposure.

“The swarm overwhelms every single-target tower.”
Stop adding more copies of the same role. Introduce area damage at the point where tokens are closest together, then use existing focused damage for stragglers or durable units.

“A strong enemy outlasts my splash damage.”
Move or add a single-target source with a clear line through the enemy’s route. If available, place control before that source so the durable target receives more attacks.
“Enemies attack my defenses instead of following the route.”
Inspect the construction for an illegal full block or a tower positioned as the only obstacle. Restore a legal path under your system’s movement rules and keep critical weapons away from the route’s unavoidable contact point.
“Random draws leave me with pieces I did not plan for.”
Reclassify each available piece by job—damage, splash, control, or support—and build the strongest combination that covers the next wave. A flexible, slightly less efficient defense is safer than waiting for one named tower.
“I keep running out of resources one wave later.”
Compare the cost of the last purchase with the income from the wave it enabled. Reduce low-impact upgrades, keep a reserve for the next known threat, and favor a single improvement that changes a kill or coverage breakpoint.
A complete opening example
Imagine a board with one entry, a bend near the center, and the objective beyond a second turn. The first tower goes beside the central bend because it covers both sides of the turn and therefore fires longer than a tower at the entry. The path remains open, but a partial funnel prevents enemies from taking a route that would bypass the bend. The next wave contains many weak units, so the second purchase is splash damage placed where the funnel concentrates them. After the wave, a few fast survivors reach the second turn; a slow tower is added before the central damage zone rather than upgrading splash again. When a durable unit appears later, focused damage is upgraded at the bend because that position offers the longest exposure. If a random draw supplies a support piece instead, it is chosen only if its range covers both damage towers; otherwise, a flexible damage option is safer.
The example is intentionally role-based. A different ruleset may change costs, activation timing, or what counts as a legal block, so reproduce the sequence of questions—not the exact pieces.
Use this pre-wave checklist
- Have I traced every entry to the objective?
- Which legal position gives my main damage source the longest practical coverage?
- Does the current layout leave an open route under this ruleset?
- What is the next wave’s main target profile: swarm, durable, fast, or mixed?
- Which role is missing or underperforming?
- Will an upgrade fix the observed problem more efficiently than a new tower?
- Do control and splash effects overlap the route where enemies actually cluster?
- Have I retained enough resources for an unexpected draw, entry, or leak?
- What result will I record after the wave so the next decision is evidence-based?
Is there a single best defense build?
No. The best defense depends on route geometry, enemy composition, available resources, and the ruleset’s reliability. A fixed-choice game may reward a planned sequence, while random draws and merges require functional flexibility. The consistent foundation is to maximize useful time in range, combine complementary roles, spend against the next actual threat, and preserve a safe route to the objective. Build around those tests and your defense can adapt without relying on an unverified universal tower ratio or placement formula.
