A tablet can be a good school device for reading, annotating, drawing, handwriting notes, and using touch-first classroom apps. It is less convenient when a student must type for long stretches, use software that works best in a desktop browser, or follow school rules that do not support personal tablets. Before buying, check the school’s required apps, account setup, device-management rules, and assessment policies; the right choice depends on the student’s actual work, not on the device category alone.

Is a tablet good for school?

It can be, when its features match the student’s everyday assignments. A touchscreen is useful for reading and marking up documents, handwriting notes, sketching, and creating or reviewing media. A tablet can also support classroom workflows through education apps and, on supported devices, accessibility controls.

But owning a tablet does not itself improve learning. The Education Endowment Foundation’s 2019 guidance on digital technology recommends purposeful use to improve teaching or learning. Its scope is digital technology broadly—not a tablet-specific study or an evaluation of screen time. In its announcement of the guidance, the EEF said, “Put simply, this means buying a tablet for every pupil is unlikely to boost pupil attainment.” That is a caution against treating device access as an educational outcome, not a head-to-head trial showing that tablets are ineffective.

What schoolwork suits a tablet?

Reading and annotation

A tablet’s touch interface can make it convenient to read digital materials, highlight passages, write comments, and move between a text and a related app. Whether those tasks work well depends on the school’s platform and the particular app; check the required workflow rather than assuming a mobile app has every feature of its web version.

Handwriting, drawing, and media

For students who take handwritten notes, draw, or work with images and video, a tablet may fit naturally. Handwriting with a stylus depends on support for the specific tablet and accessory, so confirm compatibility before budgeting for one. A camera and creative apps may also be useful for school projects, but a stylus is not a universal requirement.

Accessibility and individual accommodations

Accessibility features may make a tablet more usable for some learners. Apple documents built-in iPad features for vision, mobility, hearing, and cognitive access. Google lists Chromebook tools such as Reading Mode, Select-to-speak, and magnification. These vendor feature lists establish what tools are offered, not whether a particular student will benefit or whether a school’s accommodation requirements will be met.

The Institute of Education Sciences has noted a gap between the availability of accessibility tools and students’ actual use of them in digital assessment. Students may need instruction, guided practice, and regular opportunities to learn how to use relevant tools. Ask the school’s support team how the student’s accommodations will work on the proposed device, including during assessments.

When does a tablet become inconvenient?

Long-form typing

Writing essays, entering extended answers, and switching among several documents can be less comfortable on a tablet without a physical keyboard. Apple’s assessment guidance describes using physical keyboards with iPad, but compatibility for a particular assessment still needs to be confirmed. If the student types frequently, compare the tablet alone with a compatible keyboard setup and a school-supported laptop or Chromebook.

Mobile apps may not match the web workflow

An app can exist for a tablet without matching the functions of its browser-based counterpart. Apple Education Community’s guide to Google Workspace on iPad says the apps have limited functionality relative to the web versions. Confirm the exact apps and tasks the school expects students to complete; if a required feature is missing or behaves differently on mobile, that can outweigh the tablet’s portability.

School accounts, management, and assessments

A personal tablet may not fit the school’s account or device-management setup. Apple’s deployment guidance describes both shared and one-to-one deployments and the role of mobile device management. Ask whether personal tablets are supported, whether students need managed accounts or particular software, and which devices are accepted for online assessments. A device that works at home may still be unsuitable for a school-managed workflow.

Accessories affect the overall cost

If the student needs sustained typing, a keyboard adds to the total cost; protection may also be practical for a device carried to school. Check that any keyboard or stylus works with the exact tablet model, and include required protection and school-approved accessories in the comparison. Do not assume either accessory is necessary for every student.

How common are school-provided tablets?

In the United States, 88% of public schools had a one-to-one computing program for the 2024–25 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2025). Among public schools with one-to-one programs, 89% made laptops available and 27% made tablets available. These are school device-availability figures, not measures of student ownership, academic results, or which device is better. They also do not describe private schools or other countries.

Tablet, tablet with keyboard, or school laptop?

Option Likely fit Check before choosing
Tablet alone Reading, annotation, handwriting, drawing, and touch-first apps Required apps and browser tasks; assessment compatibility; whether typing demands are manageable
Tablet with keyboard A student who values tablet-based reading or creative work but also types regularly Exact keyboard and tablet compatibility; app and assessment support; added accessory cost
School-supported laptop or Chromebook A student whose workload depends on extended typing, browser-based tools, or a school-managed computer workflow School requirements, accessibility needs, approved accounts, and assessment rules

No option is automatically superior for learning. Google describes Chromebooks as education devices with built-in accessibility features, while Apple documents managed iPad deployments and education workflows. Those vendor descriptions can help identify features and management options, but they are not independent evidence that one platform produces better learning outcomes.

What to check before buying

  1. Get the school’s requirements. Ask whether personal tablets are supported, which apps and accounts students need, and whether there are device-management or model restrictions.
  2. Check assessment rules. Confirm which devices and keyboards are allowed, whether required testing software works on the proposed device, and how the student’s accommodations are supported.
  3. List the student’s regular tasks. Estimate how much time goes to reading and annotation, handwriting or drawing, media work, and sustained typing. Match the device to the dominant work rather than to a single appealing feature.
  4. Verify the exact app workflow. Check required features in the app and browser on the specific platform, especially if classwork relies on a service with different mobile and web functionality.
  5. Compare the complete setup. Include a compatible keyboard if frequent typing calls for one, along with any necessary protection or stylus. Do not pay for accessories the student’s work does not require.
  6. Plan support for accessibility tools. Identify which features the student needs and ask who will help them learn and use those tools in class and during assessments.

Does a tablet cause classroom distraction?

The evidence summarized here does not establish a tablet-specific causal claim about distraction or learning outcomes. Findings or perceptions about cell-phone use should not be treated as proof about school tablets: the devices and classroom policies are not equivalent. For an individual student, ask how the school handles notifications, permitted apps, and off-task use rather than assuming that a tablet will either help or distract.
