In one October 2026 inspection, a T95 H616 Android TV box made several internet connections before its testers signed in or deliberately opened apps. The inspected unit also reported a December 5, 2019 security patch level and used software identity values associated with a Google Pixel 2. Those findings raise questions about its software support and identity, but they do not prove the box was infected, committed ad fraud, or uploaded personal data. They apply to one device, not every T95 listing.
What Smart Home Perfected tested
Smart Home Perfected reported buying the examined unit for $51.49 from an Amazon listing on September 23, 2026. Its label listed an Allwinner H616 processor, Android 10, 4 GB of memory, and 32 GB of storage; those were label specifications, not independently verified performance results. The report cautions that the T95 name does not guarantee identical software across listings. Source
On October 4, the testers connected the box by Ethernet to a separate bench network. They did not use Wi-Fi, sign in to Google, or deliberately open preinstalled apps. They recorded outbound connections and local DNS lookups and conducted one inspection session for system properties, package information, and logs. A packet-size issue initially prevented one connection from completing; the network was then corrected. The report’s planned October 4–7 baseline was not complete when it was published on October 5, so this was not a finished three-day observation. Source
What the box did on first connection
The initial connection list included time synchronization and Google connectivity checks, Baidu and a preinstalled Adups updater, Google push notification and Firebase services, and Prime Video and Amazon advertising services. These are destinations observed by the testers, not proof of what data was exchanged or why a service was contacted. In particular, contact with an advertising endpoint alone does not establish ad fraud. The report does not provide a complete total of uploaded data, and encrypted traffic limits what can be inferred from destinations. Source

What the reported software identity means
Old declared security patch level
The examined unit reported an Android security patch level of December 5, 2019. Smart Home Perfected did not independently audit every security fix, so the date is a field reported by the device—not proof that every patch was missing or a complete account of its security state. It is nevertheless a substantial reason to question how current the software support is. Source
Pixel 2-associated values on TV-box hardware
The report also found an Android fingerprint associated with a Pixel 2 and Google brand and manufacturer values on the TV box. The authors could not determine why those values were present, and did not establish that every service accepted or acted on them. This is an identity inconsistency, not evidence by itself of a specific malicious action. Source
How this differs from the earlier T95 malware reports
In May 2023, TechCrunch reported on an investigation by Daniel Milisic that found an AllWinner T95 communicating with command-and-control servers and described a clickbot payload. TechCrunch also reported that EFF security researcher Bill Budington independently confirmed findings after buying an affected device; EFF published its own account as well. That is historical evidence about devices investigated in 2022–23. It does not show that every T95 variant—or the unit inspected in 2026—had the same infection. TechCrunch report

Smart Home Perfected explicitly said its 2026 observations did not establish malware infection, ad fraud, personal-data theft, or relaying other people’s traffic. The incomplete observation period and the limits of destination-only inspection also mean the test cannot guarantee how the device might behave later. There is no representative prevalence figure in these reports that would support estimating how many T95 boxes are affected. Source
Does every T95 box have the same hardware or streaming capability?
No. The T95 label covers different configurations, so details from one listing or firmware page should not be treated as specifications for all units. AndroidPCtv’s 2022 description of one H616 variant lists a quad-core Allwinner H616, Mali-G31 graphics, microSD expansion, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet, HDMI, and an infrared remote. That same description says the variant lacked certificates needed for higher-resolution playback on most paid streaming services. What an owner can do
If you have not started using it
Given the old declared patch level and inaccurate software identity on the examined unit, Smart Home Perfected says it would favor an established streaming device instead. For a T95 owner deciding what to do, the publisher suggests disconnecting it while considering a return or replacement. This is cautious guidance based on that unit’s findings, not a claim that every box is compromised. Source

The report suggests placing the box on a network that cannot reach other household devices, and verifying that a guest network actually isolates connected devices. Isolation can limit what the box can access on the local network; it does not update or repair the box’s software. Source
Why reflashing is not a confirmed fix
A community GitHub page gives SD-card firmware installation instructions for an H616 T95/T95H and warns that flashing erases the card. That documentation is not proof of manufacturer support, universal model compatibility, or a secure outcome. Smart Home Perfected reported these Amazon options in stock on October 5, 2026. The prices are a dated snapshot, not guaranteed current prices, and the report did not test these devices as part of its T95 inspection. Source
