There is no nationwide winner among T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. The right choice depends on signal at your home, workplace, commute, and travel destinations; the number of lines and amount of data you use; hotspot and international requirements; and the cost of leaving your current carrier. Check address-level coverage first, compare plans using identical assumptions, then calculate device balances, lost bill credits, activation charges, and any replacement-phone cost before you move.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Wireless performance is local. A carrier that works well across one neighborhood can be weaker inside a particular building or along a rural route. Public maps are useful for narrowing the choice, but they are not a promise that your phone will work in every room.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says its mobile coverage display represents expected service outdoors or in a moving vehicle. It does not show indoor availability. Providers submit modeled coverage, so an address that appears covered can still have poor service because of building materials, terrain, congestion, device differences, or local network conditions.
Carrier offers also change frequently. The exact monthly total, taxes, regulatory or recovery fees, discounts, device promotions, and eligibility rules must be checked in each carrier’s current plan page, Broadband Facts label, and checkout flow. The comparison published by Verizon and reviewed in September 2026 describes different plan structures, but it is carrier-authored and is not a neutral, account-specific quote for all three networks.

How to compare coverage fairly
1. Start with the FCC National Broadband Map
Use the FCC’s National Broadband Map to compare reported mobile availability by provider and technology layer. Treat the result as a screening tool: the map’s outdoor and in-vehicle scope does not answer whether service will work in your bedroom, basement, office, or other indoor location.
The FCC’s map guidance, updated May 15, 2025, lets you switch provider and technology layers so the comparison uses the same view for each network. Save screenshots or notes with the date, because coverage layers and carrier maps can change. A map is most useful for identifying a likely gap or a location that deserves hands-on testing; it is not a reliable way to rank networks nationally.
2. Check each carrier’s address-searchable map
Enter the same addresses on all three carrier maps:
Recommended Free Tools
- Your home, including the rooms where you make calls or use data.
- Your workplace, school, or other daily destination.
- The full route of your regular commute, including transit corridors and stops.
- Frequent travel locations, such as relatives’ homes, rural properties, airports, and campgrounds.
Record the displayed technology and any map disclaimer. Verizon describes its own map as approximate and states, “This map shows approximate outdoor coverage and is not a guarantee of service.” That wording is a useful warning not to treat a colored map region as a service guarantee.
3. Look for real-world evidence at the exact locations
Ask people who use each network at the same addresses, or use a carrier’s current trial option when you separately confirm eligibility and terms. A test at a nearby intersection is less useful than a test in the building and room where you actually need service. Check at more than one time of day if congestion is a concern, and test both a call and data rather than relying on signal bars alone.
4. Document a serious map discrepancy
The FCC’s Mobile Speed Test app lets consumers challenge provider-reported mobile coverage. The procedure described by the FCC on April 8, 2025, requires tests outdoors or in a vehicle; indoor tests cannot be submitted for that purpose. The process can document a mismatch between reported and observed outdoor or in-vehicle service, but it does not replace your own indoor testing.
Build an apples-to-apples plan comparison
Write down the household assumptions before looking at promotional cards. At minimum, specify the number of phone lines, whether tablets or watches are included, typical monthly data use, hotspot use, travel countries, and whether you need a new phone. Prices shown for one line cannot be used to rank four-line accounts.

| Comparison item | What to record for each carrier | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Lines and account size | Number of phone lines and any connected devices; autopay requirement | Per-line pricing and discounts vary with account size and conditions. |
| Total recurring price | Advertised rate plus taxes, regulatory or recovery fees, and required add-ons | A headline rate is not the amount charged to your bank account. |
| High-speed data | Premium-data allowance, deprioritization language, and any stated speed reduction | Two plans described as “unlimited” can behave differently after a threshold or during congestion. |
| Hotspot | Included high-speed hotspot amount, reduced-speed access afterward, and add-on price | Phone data and tethered laptop data may have separate limits. |
| International use | Included roaming countries, high-speed data limits, call/text rules, and pass prices | A plan that is inexpensive at home may be costly for your actual destinations. |
| Perks | Included subscriptions or services and their continuation terms | A bundle has value only if your household uses it and the benefit remains included. |
| Promotion eligibility | New-line, port-in, trade-in, autopay, financing, and credit-period requirements | Missing one condition can remove a discount or change the effective price. |
Price promotions need a time horizon
Separate the first bill, the recurring bill after all credits begin, and the bill after a limited credit period ends. Note whether the advertised amount assumes a port-in, a trade-in, new lines, autopay, or device financing. Keep a copy of the Broadband Facts label and checkout summary showing the assumptions you accepted.
Also check whether a discount applies to every line or only selected lines, whether a connected device has a separate service charge, and whether a plan change can end an existing credit. Ask when credits begin, how long they last, and what happens if you upgrade, suspend, or transfer a line. These details can matter more than a small difference in the advertised base rate.
Do not treat carrier marketing as an independent ranking
Verizon’s comparison article contains numerical plan and speed claims, but those figures are carrier-published. They should not be presented as an independent national ranking without checking the original plan name, date, geography, methodology, and disclosures. No independent, apples-to-apples statistic establishes that one of these three carriers is best everywhere.
Use your needs to narrow the choice
Once coverage checks are complete, eliminate any carrier that fails at a location you cannot compromise on. Among the remaining options, select the plan whose limits match your use rather than the plan with the most impressive headline perk.

If reliable service at one address is non-negotiable
Give the exact home, workplace, or travel route priority. A lower monthly price does not compensate for a dead zone where you need emergency calls, work access, or two-factor-authentication messages. Confirm the result with a trial or trusted local users when possible.
If your household uses a lot of mobile data
Compare premium-data treatment and congestion language, not just the word “unlimited.” Record how much high-speed hotspot data is included and what happens after it is used. A household that tethers laptops can exhaust a separate hotspot allowance even when on-device data remains available.
If you travel internationally
List the countries and trip lengths you actually use. Compare included roaming regions, high-speed data limits, call and text rules, and pass prices. A perk has no practical value if it excludes your destination or drops to a speed unsuitable for navigation and messaging.

If you value bundled subscriptions
Count a subscription only when someone in your household would otherwise pay for it. Check whether it is included permanently or only while a particular plan, line count, autopay setting, or promotion remains active.

Favor a quote that clearly separates service, taxes, fees, device payments, and temporary credits. Save the final checkout screen and compare it with the first two bills. A low introductory total may rise when a promotion ends, a device installment starts, or an autopay condition is missed.
Calculate the real cost of switching
Use a one-time switching-cost worksheet instead of relying on an advertised “free” phone or bill credit.
| Cost or credit | How to determine it |
|---|---|
| Remaining device balance | Ask the current carrier for the payoff amount for every financed device. |
| Lost promotional credits | Identify monthly bill credits that stop when a line is canceled or a device is paid off early. |
| Replacement phone | Add the price of a compatible unlocked phone only if the current device cannot be unlocked or supported. |
| Activation or connection charges | Check the destination carrier’s current checkout disclosure; fees can vary by offer and account. |
| Taxes, deposits, and first-bill differences | Include device taxes, required deposits, prorated service, and any one-time charges shown before submission. |
| Short-term overlap | Allow for keeping the old line active until a number transfer and new-service test are complete. |
Simple formula: switching cost = device payoffs + lost credits + replacement phone (if needed) + activation and other one-time charges + temporary overlap. Compare that total with the expected monthly savings over the period you intend to stay. A plan that is cheaper each month may still take many months to recover a large device payoff.
Run the calculation twice if you are considering a trade-in: once using the advertised promotional credit and once using the value you would receive without the promotion. Include any credit that has already posted but would be forfeited by an early payoff or cancellation. For a family account, calculate each line separately before adding the totals; one line may be paid off while another still has a long installment term.
Verizon-specific device-balance rule
Verizon’s published comparison says a remaining Verizon device-payment balance becomes due when a customer cancels. That is a Verizon statement, not a universal rule for every carrier or installment agreement. Ask your own carrier for written payoff and credit details before submitting a port or cancellation.
Can you keep your phone and number?
Number portability
The FCC states: “If you switch service providers and remain in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number.” Number-porting procedures, account-number requirements, and exceptions are carrier-specific, so obtain the exact information from your current bill or account and provide it to the new carrier.

Do not cancel the old line to “make room” for the port. The new carrier normally starts the transfer, and the old service should remain active until the transfer is confirmed. Save the transfer confirmation and test incoming calls, outgoing calls, texts, voicemail, and authentication codes before closing the old account.
Phone compatibility and unlocking
An unlocked phone may be usable on another provider, but unlocking alone does not guarantee compatibility. The phone must support the destination network’s required bands and technologies and must not be blocked or otherwise ineligible. T-Mobile’s bring-your-own-device guidance directs customers to check the device’s IMEI, compatibility, and unlocking status. Use the destination carrier’s checker before paying off or trading in a phone.

Check dual-SIM or eSIM support if you plan to keep two services temporarily. Confirm that the device is not tied to an unpaid balance, reported lost or stolen, or restricted by the current carrier. Keep the original device until the new service has been tested and the return or trade-in window is understood.
When a replacement phone is justified
Buy another device only after the compatibility and unlock checks fail or the replacement is financially better than paying to keep an unsuitable phone. If you do buy one, choose an unlocked 5G smartphone explicitly compatible with the selected carrier and verify return terms before activating it.
Step-by-step switching process
- Inventory every line and device. Record each phone number, account holder, device payment balance, promotional credit, IMEI, and whether the phone is paid off and unlocked.
- Capture your current bill. Save the latest bill and plan terms so you can identify taxes, fees, account numbers, and credits that may not appear in an advertisement.
- Check destination coverage. Use the FCC map, all three carrier maps, and address-level or trial evidence for home, work, commute, and travel locations.
- Run compatibility checks. Submit each phone’s IMEI to the destination carrier and confirm unlock eligibility. Do this before ordering a plan or trading in a device.
- Price identical assumptions. Use the same line count, autopay choice, data needs, hotspot amount, international destinations, and device-financing approach in each checkout flow.
- Read the promotion conditions. Confirm whether the rate requires a new line, port-in, trade-in, autopay, or a limited credit period, and save the written offer.
- Start the port with the new carrier. Provide the requested account and transfer information. Do not cancel the old line first if you want to keep the number.
- Activate and test. Make calls, send texts, use data indoors and outdoors, test hotspot if needed, and verify voicemail and two-factor-authentication messages at your important locations.
- Confirm the old account is closed correctly. After the transfer succeeds, obtain the final bill and check that device payoffs, lost credits, prorated service, and any returned-equipment requirements are recorded.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The map shows coverage but service fails inside the house | The FCC map models outdoor or in-vehicle service and does not show indoor conditions. | Test the exact room, try Wi-Fi calling if supported, and use a trial or another network rather than relying on the map color. |
| The new phone will not activate | It is locked, incompatible, blocked, or the IMEI was entered incorrectly. | Recheck unlock status and IMEI with the destination carrier; do not assume an unlocked label means universal compatibility. |
| The advertised bill is higher than expected | Taxes, fees, add-ons, missing autopay or port-in qualification, or a credit that has not started. | Compare the checkout disclosure and Broadband Facts label with the first bill and request a line-by-line explanation. |
| The old number stopped working before transfer | The old line was canceled before the port completed or transfer information was wrong. | Contact the new carrier’s porting team immediately; keep the old service active until transfer success is confirmed in future switches. |
| A discount disappeared after switching | A device credit was tied to the old line, trade-in, financing term, or a limited promotion. | Review the saved promotion terms and obtain the final payoff and credit schedule from the old carrier. |
| Data is slow despite an “unlimited” plan | Premium-data limits, deprioritization during congestion, or a consumed hotspot allowance. | Check the plan’s data-treatment language and hotspot counter before changing carriers. |
| A trial appears to work but the regular service does not | The trial used different eligibility, network settings, or a limited period and did not match the intended plan. | Verify the trial’s network, data limits, expiration, and conversion terms; repeat tests at the locations and times that matter. |
Questions to ask before you order
- What is the all-in recurring price for my exact number of lines after autopay, taxes, fees, and required add-ons?
- How much high-speed phone data and hotspot data is included, and what happens after each allowance?
- Which countries and roaming speeds are included for my actual trips?
- When do promotional credits begin, how long do they last, and which actions end them?
- What is the exact device payoff today, and which credits would be lost if I leave?
- Is every phone unlocked, compatible, and eligible for activation on the destination network?
- What account number, PIN, and other information is required to port each number?
- Which activation, connection, deposit, device-tax, or return charges will appear before the first normal bill?
Final decision checklist
- Coverage was checked at home, work, commute, and frequent travel locations using both FCC and carrier maps.
- Indoor performance was tested or independently verified where it matters.
- The plan comparison uses the same number of lines and the same data, hotspot, international, autopay, and promotion assumptions.
- Taxes, regulatory or recovery fees, add-ons, and post-promotion pricing are included.
- Every device’s payoff balance, remaining credits, unlock status, and destination compatibility are documented.
- Activation charges, deposits, device taxes, and temporary overlap are included in the switching-cost calculation.
- The number-porting information is ready, and the old account will remain active until the transfer is confirmed.
- The final choice is based on verified locations and actual usage, not a nationwide marketing claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which carrier has the best coverage where I live?
There is no reliable nationwide answer. Check your address on the FCC National Broadband Map and each carrier’s map, then verify the exact rooms, commute, and travel locations with local users or an eligible trial. The FCC map describes expected outdoor or in-vehicle service, not indoor performance.
How much does it cost to switch phone carriers?
Add every device payoff, promotional credit you would lose, replacement phone if needed, activation or connection charges, taxes, deposits, and temporary overlap. Compare that one-time total with your expected monthly savings; carrier fees and offers vary by account and can change.
Can I keep my phone and number if I switch?
The FCC says customers who switch providers and remain in the same geographic area can keep their number. An unlocked phone may work on another provider, but compatibility, IMEI status, and destination-network support must also be checked. Start the port with the new carrier and keep the old line active until completion.

Does an unlocked phone work on all three networks?
Not automatically. Unlocking removes a carrier restriction, but the device still needs compatible bands and technologies and must not be blocked or otherwise ineligible. Use the destination carrier’s IMEI checker before ordering service.
Will I owe my phone balance when I cancel?
Rules depend on the carrier and installment agreement. Verizon’s published comparison says a remaining Verizon device-payment balance becomes due at cancellation. Ask your carrier for a written payoff amount and confirmation of which bill credits would stop.
Should I buy a new phone before switching?
Only if the current phone cannot be unlocked or is incompatible, or if replacing it is financially preferable after calculating payoffs and lost credits. If needed, choose an unlocked 5G phone explicitly compatible with the destination carrier and check return terms.

Headline prices may exclude taxes, regulatory or recovery fees, add-ons, device payments, or temporary credits. Autopay, port-in, trade-in, financing, and line-count conditions can also affect the total. Compare the checkout disclosure and Broadband Facts label with your first bill.
Can the FCC help if a carrier map is wrong?
The FCC Mobile Speed Test app provides a challenge process for provider-reported mobile coverage. Tests must be outdoors or in a vehicle; indoor tests cannot be used for that challenge. Use it to document an outdoor or in-vehicle discrepancy, not as a substitute for indoor testing.
The Bottom Line
Choose locally, price completely, and switch carefully. Verify coverage at the places you actually use service, compare identical plan assumptions, and total device balances, lost credits, fees, and compatibility costs before moving. Keep the old line active until the number transfer and real-world tests succeed; there is no universal winner independent of your location and usage.
