Neither option is always cheaper. A T-Mobile promotion can win when you already want the qualifying plan, meet the trade-in or new-line rules, and keep the line active through the entire bill-credit period. An unlocked phone can cost less when it avoids a plan upgrade or extra line, lets you choose a lower-cost service plan, or preserves the ability to change carriers.

Compare both choices over the same ownership period. Count the phone, service, taxes, fees, trade-in value, financing credits, and the cost of leaving early—not just the advertised discount or the unlocked phone’s sticker price.

The key difference is how you pay for the phone

A carrier promotion and an unlocked purchase move costs to different parts of your budget. Understanding that accounting is more useful than the word “free” in an advertisement.

How a T-Mobile promotion is billed

Most current T-Mobile device promotions use an Equipment Installment Payment (EIP) and a Promotional Recurring Device Credit (RDC). The EIP is the monthly charge for financing the device. The RDC is a separate monthly account credit that offsets all or part of that charge. T-Mobile describes the arrangement in its promotional-offer FAQ.

A “free” phone therefore usually means that expected credits cover the advertised portion of the EIP while you satisfy the offer’s conditions. It does not mean the phone is removed from your bill on day one. The exact credit amount, credit duration, eligible plan, trade-in condition, line requirement, and other restrictions are offer-specific. T-Mobile says its deal terms are limited-time and can change; review the live deals page before ordering.

What buying unlocked changes

An unlocked phone is purchased without a carrier installment agreement or promotional credit. You pay the seller’s price, taxes and any applicable fees, then select a service plan separately. You keep the ability to move the device to another compatible network, subject to that network’s technical requirements and any remaining financing obligation from the seller.

Unlocked does not automatically mean inexpensive. A higher upfront price can be offset by a cheaper service plan, while a carrier promotion can be offset by an expensive qualifying plan. The relevant comparison is the combined phone-and-service cost over the period you expect to use the device.

Compare the same costs over the same time horizon

Pick a horizon before looking at the arithmetic. Twenty-four months is useful for a two-year ownership cycle; thirty-six months may be appropriate when the promotion’s credits run that long. If you expect to leave after 12 months, calculate 12 months as well, because a credit that arrives over 24 or 36 months has not fully paid out by then.

Cost or condition T-Mobile promotion Unlocked purchase
Phone payment Monthly EIP, less RDC credits actually received Purchase price paid up front or under the seller’s financing
Service requirement Qualifying plan, and sometimes a new line or port-in; exact requirement varies by offer (T-Mobile offers) Any compatible plan you choose; compare its full cost over the horizon
Trade-in May be required; condition and model eligibility are offer-specific Optional. Include the trade-in credit you would actually receive from the seller or another buyer
Taxes and connection charges Offer-specific taxes and possible device connection charge; amount not stated generally Sales tax and any seller, activation, or shipping fees; amount depends on location and seller
Credit period Offer-specific, commonly up to 24 or 36 months according to the promotional FAQ None from the carrier promotion
Leaving early Credits can stop and the remaining device balance can become due if the account is canceled before all credits arrive (FAQ) No carrier credits to lose; check any separate seller-financing terms
Unlock and switching Check the device’s current unlock policy and network compatibility Usually sold unlocked, but verify the exact model’s bands, eSIM support, and intended-network compatibility

A step-by-step worksheet for the real price

Use one worksheet for each option. Enter the figures from the specific offer, receipt, plan page, and tax estimate rather than relying on a headline.

  1. Set the horizon. Write down the number of months you expect to keep the line and phone. Run a second calculation for your earliest realistic upgrade or cancellation date.
  2. Identify the exact phone. Record storage capacity, model number, region, and condition. An unlocked model with a different storage tier is not a fair comparison with the promotional model.
  3. List T-Mobile’s device charges. Multiply the EIP by the number of months in your horizon, then subtract only the RDC credits you expect to receive during those months. Use (monthly EIP × months) − (monthly RDC × credits received). If the credit period extends beyond your horizon, do not count future credits.
  4. Add the T-Mobile entry costs. Include taxes due at purchase, a device connection charge if shown, and any other fee required by that offer.
  5. Calculate incremental service cost. Start with the plan you would buy without the promotion. Add only the extra amount caused by the deal, such as a required plan upgrade or a new line you would not otherwise open. If you already need that plan or line, its baseline cost belongs in both options rather than being blamed on the phone.
  6. Value the trade-in consistently. Enter the credit you would receive for the same device through each route. If accepting the T-Mobile promotion means giving up a higher private-sale value, record that foregone value as a cost of the promotion.
  7. Price the unlocked route. Add the unlocked phone’s actual price, taxes and fees, then add the selected service plan for every month in the horizon. Subtract any unlocked-purchase trade-in credit that is actually available.
  8. Test the exit case. Recalculate if you cancel, switch carriers, or upgrade before the credit period ends. Include the remaining EIP balance and remove credits that would no longer arrive.

The resulting comparison is:

  • T-Mobile total: device payments minus credits received + taxes and fees + incremental plan or line cost + trade-in value surrendered.
  • Unlocked total: phone price + taxes and fees + selected service cost − trade-in credit.

Keep the service baseline visible. A plan that costs $15 more each month adds $360 over 24 months; a $20 difference adds $480. Those recurring amounts can outweigh a large-looking device discount.

Conditions that can change a T-Mobile deal’s economics

Qualifying plan or a new line

Promotions may require a particular plan, a port-in, a new line, or a combination. The switching-offer page and individual offer terms describe eligibility, but the requirements differ between promotions. Count a plan upgrade or extra line only when it is an incremental choice you would not make without the phone deal. If you were going to upgrade your plan anyway, separate that planned expense from the phone decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-in eligibility and condition

A promotion may depend on the trade-in model, its condition, and when it is received. Compare the trade-in’s promotional credit with the value you could obtain by selling or trading the device elsewhere. A phone that is worth $200 to you as a private sale is not “free” if the deal requires surrendering it and supplies no equivalent value in your calculation.

Taxes, connection charges and other upfront amounts

Even when the device’s net installment cost is expected to be zero, taxes and a connection charge can be due at purchase. The amount depends on location and the offer, so enter the figure shown at checkout. Do not spread a one-time fee across later months and accidentally hide it.

Cancellation before all credits arrive

T-Mobile’s promotional FAQ says credits stop if the account is canceled before all credits have been received and that the remaining device balance is then due. The precise treatment can depend on the promotion and account, so read the terms attached to your order. If you might move within the credit period, model that payoff rather than assuming the advertised discount will be completed.

Paying off the device early

Early payoff is different from canceling the account. T-Mobile’s FAQ states: “If you pay off your EIP early, you’ll continue to receive the promised Recurring Device Credits (RDC) as an account-level credit through the remaining months of the promotional credit period (up to 24 or 36 months).” Confirm the current policy and the exact promotion before making an early payment; an account change, line change, or cancellation can have separate effects.

Unlock timing and switching

Do not assume a promotional phone is immediately usable on another network. The FAQ’s surfaced language says: “If your device is paid in full and has been used for 40 day or more on our network, you may request an unlock when you contact us to cancel.” Because unlock rules can change, verify the current requirement for your account and device. After unlocking, the model still must support the other network’s frequencies, calling features, and SIM or eSIM setup.

Costs and risks on the unlocked side

Upfront price and taxes

Unlocked ownership puts the largest phone expense at the beginning. Compare the exact storage tier and model, then add your local sales tax, shipping, activation, and return-related costs. A low listed price for an older or smaller-capacity model is not equivalent to a discounted flagship with different hardware.

Service-plan savings

The unlocked route often becomes attractive when it allows a lower-cost plan. Multiply the monthly difference between that plan and the T-Mobile qualifying plan by the same horizon used for the device calculation. Also check whether the cheaper plan has different data limits, hotspot rules, roaming, video quality, or support; a lower price is not the same service.

Compatibility and support

Before buying, verify the model number, supported network bands, VoLTE or equivalent calling support, 5G compatibility where needed, and eSIM or physical-SIM requirements for the network you intend to use. Confirm the seller’s warranty and return window. A phone that cannot activate on your chosen network is not a saving, regardless of its purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Financing outside the carrier

If you finance an unlocked phone through a retailer or manufacturer, include its interest, required account, and payoff rules. The phone may be unlocked at sale while the financing agreement remains a separate obligation. Compare the total financed amount, not only the advertised monthly payment.

Worked example with explicit assumptions

The following numbers are illustrative, not a current T-Mobile offer. They show how a plan requirement can dominate the device calculation.

Item over 24 months Illustrative T-Mobile promotion Illustrative unlocked route
Phone price or EIP $30 EIP × 24 = $720 $720 purchase price
Credits $30 RDC × 24 = −$720 None
Taxes and connection charge $90 $58 sales tax
Incremental service cost $15 monthly plan upgrade × 24 = $360 Plan is $5 cheaper than the baseline × 24 = −$120
Calculated total $450 $658

Under those assumptions, the promotion is $208 cheaper over 24 months even though the customer pays $90 in upfront charges and accepts a plan upgrade. Change the assumptions and the result changes: if the T-Mobile plan upgrade were $25 per month instead of $15, its total would rise by another $240; if the unlocked phone cost $500 rather than $720, the unlocked route would fall by $220. The point is to expose the variables, not to predict a universal winner.

When each option is more likely to cost less

A T-Mobile deal is more likely to win when

  • You already need the qualifying plan and would keep it for the full 24- or 36-month credit period.
  • Your trade-in meets the offer’s condition and its promotional value is competitive with the value you could get elsewhere.
  • The credits cover most of the EIP and the upfront taxes and fees are modest.
  • You are comfortable remaining with T-Mobile until the credits finish and do not expect an early upgrade or cancellation.

An unlocked phone is more likely to win when

  • The promotion requires a plan upgrade, port-in, or new line that you would not otherwise choose.
  • You can use a materially cheaper service plan while keeping the coverage and features you need.
  • You may switch carriers, change plans, or replace the phone before the promotional credits finish.
  • The unlocked model is discounted, you have no suitable trade-in, or the carrier’s required trade-in gives up substantial resale value.

The result is genuinely close when

The phone totals are similar and the main difference is service. In that case, choose based on flexibility, coverage, warranty, upgrade timing, and how much administrative risk you are willing to accept. A slightly higher calculated total can be reasonable if it avoids a long commitment that does not fit your plans.

Checklist before accepting a “free phone”

  1. Open the exact promotion details, not only the headline banner.
  2. Write down the EIP, RDC amount, number of credit months, qualifying plan, trade-in model and condition, new-line or port-in rule, and any activation or connection charge.
  3. Ask when taxes are due and whether the device is financed even though the net monthly charge is expected to be zero.
  4. Calculate the balance and lost credits if you cancel, change the line, or upgrade early.
  5. Confirm whether an early EIP payoff preserves account-level credits under this promotion.
  6. Check the phone’s unlock status, the current unlock request requirements, and compatibility with the network you may use next.
  7. Save the offer terms and order confirmation. Promotional pages can change, and your account-specific documentation is the useful record.

How to diagnose a bill that does not look “free”

The EIP appears but the credit does not

Credits may begin after activation, trade-in inspection, or another stated milestone. Compare the bill’s EIP and RDC line items with the promotion’s start conditions. If the required step is complete and the credit is still missing, contact T-Mobile with the order and promotion identification.

The credit is smaller than expected

Check whether the advertised amount was the maximum total discount spread across a stated term, whether your device qualified for a different tier, or whether a plan change altered eligibility. Use the exact terms attached to your account rather than a different banner seen later.

You are planning to leave before the term ends

Recalculate immediately using the remaining EIP balance, credits that would stop, and any replacement phone or plan cost. If that exit total is uncomfortable, an unlocked purchase may have been the safer choice even if its day-one price was higher.

Use current pages for the final verification

T-Mobile’s device promotions page lists current offers, while the promotional-offer FAQ explains EIP, RDC, early payoff, cancellation, and unlock language. The switching page shows that some “free phone” offers are tied to switching conditions. For plan pricing and eligibility context, consult T-Mobile’s current plan comparison. Reopen these pages when you buy because displayed prices, credit durations, and eligibility rules are not permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical answer is conditional: calculate the complete phone-and-service total for your expected stay, then stress-test an early-exit scenario. The lower sticker price is not enough evidence that either route costs less.
