T-Mobile uses new iPhone launches to promote offers for people switching carriers, but available sources do not show how many customers switch at launch or prove that launch deals cause a broad wave of moves. The practical draw is the possibility of getting a new phone with trade-in credits or other incentives; whether switching pays off depends on the required plan, credit schedule, trade-in rules, and any balance left on your old phone.
Why an iPhone launch can prompt a carrier switch
When a new iPhone arrives, people who are already considering an upgrade have a timely reason to compare carrier offers. T-Mobile has marketed directly to that moment: its September 2024 iPhone 16 announcement paired trade-in-based device credits on named Go5G plans with a limited-time $200 T-Mobile spending credit for each qualifying line switched from eligible carriers. That offer is a historical example, not a current promotion or evidence of how many people actually switched. T-Mobile’s iPhone 16 announcement

The appeal is straightforward: a carrier may make the phone look cheaper if you bring your number, trade in an eligible device, or meet other promotion rules. But a phone credit is only one part of the cost. The service plan, how long credits take to arrive, and whether you can keep the credits if you leave all affect the real value.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat T-Mobile’s current iPhone switch offers involve
As of October 7, 2026, T-Mobile’s offers page lists multiple iPhone promotions for customers switching to T-Mobile with a qualifying plan. Credits may be spread across as many as 36 months. Some offers also include a $35 device connection charge and taxes. Because the offers and terms can change, confirm the exact device, eligible plan, credit amount, trade-in requirements, fees, and deadline on T-Mobile’s current phone deals page before deciding.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
A promotion that advertises a large credit may require a more expensive plan than you would otherwise choose. If credits arrive monthly, leaving or changing to an ineligible plan before the full term may affect what you receive. The offer page’s terms should govern; do not assume the advertised device value will be paid upfront.
How Keep and Switch differs from an iPhone launch deal
Keep and Switch is a separate option for eligible new voice customers who still owe money on a phone financed through a previous carrier. T-Mobile says it can reimburse up to $800 per line toward a remaining device payment balance, for up to four voice lines. Eligibility depends on the previous carrier and phone, a qualifying plan, an account in good standing, at least 90 days on the previous carrier’s device payment plan, and having the phone unlocked before porting. Check the current details at T-Mobile’s Keep and Switch page; this reimbursement is not the same as an iPhone trade-in credit.

How to decide whether switching is worth it
- Identify the exact promotion. Check the iPhone model, required plan, trade-in condition and eligibility, credit amount and duration, taxes, fees, and offer deadline on the current T-Mobile offer page.
- Compare service costs over the credit term. Work out what you would pay for the qualifying T-Mobile plan over the months credits are scheduled, then compare it with your alternative plan costs. Include any plan upgrade required solely to qualify.
- Value your trade-in realistically. Confirm which device qualifies and whether its condition meets the offer rules. Compare the promotion’s credit with what you would receive by keeping or selling the phone elsewhere, if that is relevant to your choice.
- Check any old device balance. If you are considering Keep and Switch, verify your carrier, phone, account status, financing history, unlock status, and reimbursement limit before porting. Do not count on reimbursement until your situation meets the stated conditions.
- Review the exit terms. Read what happens to unpaid bill credits if you cancel service or change plans before they finish posting. Include any remaining phone payments and upfront charges in your calculation.
For a useful comparison, add the service charges, device payments after credits, taxes, and fees you expect to pay during the credit period. Compare that total with the cost of keeping your current carrier and buying the iPhone another way. The reviewed promotion pages do not provide a one-size-fits-all cost comparison for every household.
What customer-experience research does—and does not—say
JD Power’s 2025 U.S. Wireless Retail Experience Study—Volume 1, based on responses collected from July through December 2024, found that 34% of customers believed their wireless service had improved in value. In the same study, 45% strongly agreed that their plans and features were easy to understand; customers who said their plans and features were easy to understand had cost-and-promotions satisfaction scores 203 points higher. These findings underline why clear offer terms matter, but they do not show that plan complexity caused people to switch carriers at an iPhone launch. JD Power’s 2025 study release

T-Mobile scored 832 in the study’s mobile network operator segment, compared with the segment average of 819. This was a retail experience study measuring areas including cost, promotions, and the purchase process—not a network coverage result. JD Power senior director Carl Lepper said providers should help customers understand plans, bills, and phone changes. The study offers customer-experience context, not a measure of iPhone-launch switching or proof that T-Mobile’s promotions drive it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, why do some people consider switching?
The evidence supports a limited conclusion: T-Mobile has used iPhone launch periods and ongoing promotions to attract switchers with device credits and other incentives. Those offers can make switching appealing to someone already shopping for a phone, especially if the plan fits their needs or an eligible reimbursement helps with an old device balance. They do not establish a population-wide trend, and a large advertised credit alone does not show that a switch saves money.
