Yes—but only for behaviors they have been checked against. Synthetic shoppers can help test recommendation systems in controlled, repeatable scenarios, but a convincing conversation is not proof that a simulated user behaves like a real customer. Treat their results as a way to find and diagnose problems, then validate important conclusions with human or live-experiment evidence when practical.

What can a synthetic shopper tell you?

A simulated shopper can let a team test how a recommender responds to chosen inputs without recruiting people for every iteration. That makes simulation useful for comparing versions and probing situations that are difficult to reproduce consistently. But the result describes the interaction between the recommender and that simulator—not automatically how a population of customers would respond.

The distinction matters because language that sounds natural can still encode unrealistic choices, preferences, or feedback. In their 2024 NAACL paper, Se-eun Yoon, Zhankui He, Jessica Echterhoff, and Julian McAuley describe synthetic users as “cost-effective proxies for real users” while proposing a protocol specifically intended to measure how well large language models emulate human behavior and reveal deviations. Read the paper and protocol.

How do you check whether the simulated shopper acts like a person?

Evaluate the behaviors the recommender depends on, rather than judging the simulator by how plausible its final recommendation request sounds. Yoon and co-authors organize conversational recommendation around five tasks:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Choosing items to discuss: Does the simulated user bring up items in a way that matches the human behavior relevant to your use case?
  2. Expressing binary preferences: Can it communicate a simple like-or-dislike response reliably?
  3. Expressing open-ended preferences: Does it describe tastes or constraints in a way that resembles the people the system is meant to serve?
  4. Requesting recommendations: Does it ask for suggestions in the situations where real users would?
  5. Giving feedback: Does its response to recommendations resemble the feedback the system would receive from people?

A simulator might perform well on one task and poorly on another. Compare its outputs with human behavior for the relevant task and population; do not let success on one conversational exchange stand in for overall fidelity.

Which recommendation situations should you test?

A test with a complete user profile answers a different question from a test with little history or a newly emerging interest. AgentRecBench, a NeurIPS 2025 benchmark, describes three recommendation-agent scenarios that help make this distinction concrete:

Scenario What it probes Published example
Classic recommendation Recommendation under a standard scenario. AgentRecBench includes a classic recommendation scenario. Source
Evolving interests Whether recommendations respond to changing tastes rather than only established preferences. AgentRecBench uses a three-month window for longer-term preference and a one-week window for emerging patterns. Source
Cold start What happens when user or item histories are sparse. AgentRecBench covers both user-side and item-side cold start. Source

These are useful examples, not a universal checklist. Choose scenarios that match the product question: a system serving returning users with rich histories needs different tests from one encountering new users, new items, or fast-changing tastes.

How strong is simulation evidence?

Simulation is one stage in a broader evaluation process, not a substitute for every other method. A survey by Stavinova and colleagues frames recommender simulation as an intermediate option between offline counterfactual policy evaluation and online controlled experiments. It also discusses the simulation-to-reality gap and methodological and reproducibility concerns in the literature it reviewed, which covers work published before the end of 2021. Read the survey.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Use simulated shoppers to screen changes and diagnose behavior under controlled conditions. For consequential product decisions, seek corroboration from real users or online controlled evidence when feasible. State which users, tasks, data, and scenarios the simulation represents, and avoid claiming that results transfer beyond that scope without evidence.

What should you inspect in a benchmark report?

A benchmark score is only as informative as the experiment behind it. Check whether the evaluation reports the details needed to interpret and reproduce its results:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Behavioral fidelity: Is the simulator compared with human behavior for the specific actions that matter, such as preference expression and feedback?
  • Scenario coverage: Are tests limited to a standard, full-history case, or do they include changing interests and sparse user or item histories?
  • Evidence proximity: Is the result from offline replay, simulation, recruited participants, or a live controlled experiment?
  • Uncertainty and reproducibility: Are repeated runs, uncertainty measures, data splits, and implementation details reported?

For example, AgentRecBench’s author checklist says its experiments do not report statistical-significance information and that the authors evaluated three LLM architectures rather than conducting repeated trials because of API cost considerations. Those are limitations of that paper’s experiments, not grounds to assume every simulator study has the same limitations. See the benchmark and checklist.

Where does a reproducible benchmark fit?

Reproducible datasets and splits can make recommendation evaluations easier to compare, but they do not by themselves show that an LLM simulator faithfully represents people. ORBIT presents a standardized framework using public datasets and reproducible splits; it describes ClueWeb-Reco as synthetic data derived from user-consented browsing data. That benchmark context is useful for reproducibility, but it is not direct evidence that simulated shoppers accurately emulate human users. Read the ORBIT paper.
