Synth-OOP treats an expression such as a + b as a method-dispatch operation, conceptually equivalent to a.+(b). The idea is to make operators part of the same object behavior and lookup model as ordinary methods. Synth-OOP is an experiment in language and runtime design; its author describes Syclun as the reference interpreter and reports that the current implementation is a tree-walking interpreter, not a JIT compiler.
What does it mean for an operator to be a method?
In many languages, operators such as + have dedicated rules in the language implementation. Synth-OOP’s central proposal is to express an operation as behavior supplied by an object: the expression a + b corresponds conceptually to a call like a.+(b). The interpreter can then use method lookup and invocation machinery for the operation, rather than treating every operator as a separate core mechanism.
This does not mean the expression is merely alternate punctuation with no runtime consequences. The design ties operator behavior to the object model: which behavior is used depends on method dispatch. The proposal’s appeal is architectural unification, not a demonstrated performance or productivity advantage.

In the author’s account, operator dispatch is one instance of a broader runtime model. The described interpreter has prototypes and instances, mutable runtime methods, and attributes that can be constant or private. Method signatures are checked at call boundaries. The language is also described as duck-typed: an object is suitable when it supplies the behavior a caller needs, subject to those signature checks.

Mutation and dispatch
Because methods can change at runtime, a future optimizing compiler could not simply assume that a method call always reaches the same target. It would need a way to validate relevant object or method state and respond if that state changed. This is the author’s analysis of a design challenge for possible future optimization, not evidence that a JIT exists or that a particular optimization has been measured.
Closures and environments
The author describes a closure as code paired with a captured environment. The interpreter’s existing frame, environment, and invocation structure could provide shared machinery for this behavior. That is a connection in the reported design, rather than an independently audited account of every language semantic detail.

Streams as method-driven flow
Stream syntax is described as data flowing between objects through methods. As with operators, this frames an operation in terms of object behavior and invocation instead of an unrelated mechanism. The available description does not establish a separate performance or usability result for streams.

What is implemented today?
The author reports a source-to-AST-to-interpreter execution path. Its components include a lexer, recursive-descent parser, runtime object model, frames, method-signature checks, closures, exception handling, and native libraries that register themselves. The current execution engine is a tree-walking interpreter.

Intermediate representation (IR) and just-in-time (JIT) compilation are discussed as later work. They should not be confused with implemented features: the source describes no completed JIT, performance benchmark, or measured speed advantage.
What does the graph example show?
The author recounts a weighted-graph example in which a path from node 1 to node 4 goes through node 2 and has total weight 3. An early shortest_path implementation used breadth-first search, which finds paths by edge count rather than minimizing total weight. The author says it was replaced with Dijkstra’s algorithm and that a shortest_distance operation was added.

This is project history reported by the author, not an independently reproduced test. Its useful lesson is about correctness: code may run and return a path while still solving the wrong optimization problem. For a weighted graph, the algorithm must match the quantity being minimized.
What are the maturity limits?
- No JIT is implemented: execution is described as tree-walking, with IR and JIT work left for the future.
- The language is pre-1.0.0: the author says syntax and semantics may change.
- Some contract constraints remain incomplete: parameter-level constraints are not fully implemented.
- Recursion is limited: the author reports a limit of 1000.
- Libraries depend on the environment: the author identifies environment-dependent libraries, without establishing broad platform support.
- No performance basis for comparison is supplied: the source does not report benchmarks, so it cannot support claims that Synth-OOP is faster or ranks favorably against mature languages.
The project’s creator, VP_xudon, summarizes the emphasis with the statement, “Code is more honest than slogans.” That is a useful way to read the project’s claims: as an account of an evolving implementation, not proof that the design has already outperformed alternatives.
