The Synology RT2600ac is a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router whose main draw is its Synology Router Manager (SRM) software: it supports network segmentation, parental controls, traffic management, and VPN server features. Its published wireless rates are link specifications, not a promise of matching internet speeds or file-transfer performance. Whether it is a sensible choice today depends on your local availability, support status, network needs, and price.

What the RT2600ac offers

Synology lists a dual-core 1.7 GHz processor, 512 MB of DDR3 memory, and 4×4 MIMO antennas. It is a dual-band 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) router with MU-MIMO support. Those specifications describe the hardware and wireless capability; they do not establish how fast a particular home network will perform.

Specification Synology-listed value
Wi-Fi generation Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), dual-band
2.4 GHz nominal wireless rate 800 Mbps
5 GHz nominal wireless rate 1.73 Gbps
Combined nominal wireless rate 2.53 Gbps
Processor and memory Dual-core 1.7 GHz CPU; 512 MB DDR3
Wired ports Four gigabit Ethernet ports; Synology describes a dual-WAN arrangement with two WAN and three LAN ports
Other connections USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and an SD card reader

These are manufacturer specifications from Synology’s RT2600ac product page and datasheet, not independent test results. Synology also lists router and access-point operating modes.

What SRM adds

The RT2600ac’s software is a central part of its appeal. Synology describes SRM as an operating system for managing the router and its network. The product specifications list VLAN tagging and up to five network segments, along with Safe Access tools for filtering and profiles, traffic monitoring and control, and several VPN server types.

#1 Best Overall
Synology RT2600ac – 4x4 dual-band Gigabit Wi-Fi router, MU-MIMO, powerful parental controls, Threat Prevention, bandwidth management, VPN, expandable coverage with mesh Wi-Fi
  • 1.7GHz Dual-core processor for fast, uncompromising performance
  • Powerful 4x4 802.11ac wave 2 radios with MU-MIMO and up to 2.53Gbps breakthrough wireless speeds
  • Smart Connect for seamless transition between maximum speed or range
  • Hardware accelerated Layer 7 traffic control and monitoring
  • Dual WAN capable for load balancing and failover support
  • Network segmentation: VLAN tagging and multiple network segments can help separate devices or groups of devices. Segmentation still needs to be configured correctly to meet a particular isolation goal.
  • Parental controls: Safe Access provides filtering and profile-based controls. The feature set does not guarantee that every unwanted site or activity will be blocked.
  • Traffic tools: SRM offers traffic monitoring and control for managing network use.
  • VPN services: Synology lists support for multiple VPN server types. A VPN feature is not a substitute for choosing appropriate settings, credentials, and client devices.

Synology’s product page calls SRM “an intuitive OS built for security and performance”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent security assessment. Feature availability and displayed limits should be checked against the current regional product documentation.

Why the headline Wi-Fi rates are not your speed test

The listed 800 Mbps at 2.4 GHz and 1.73 Gbps at 5 GHz are nominal wireless link-rate specifications. They are not equivalent to an internet plan’s speed, a single device’s measured Wi-Fi throughput, or a file copy’s sustained transfer rate. Actual results depend on the internet connection, client radio capabilities, distance and placement, interference, and configuration. Synology itself notes that speed and coverage vary with environmental factors.

Rank #2
Synology RT6600ax - Tri-Band 4x4 160MHz Wi-Fi router, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, VLAN segmentation, Multiple SSIDs, parental controls, Threat Prevention, VPN (US Version)
  • Expanded 5.9 GHz spectrum support enables additional high-speed 80 and 160 MHz channels
  • 2.5GbE port enables support for the fastest ISPs and can optionally be configured as a LAN port
  • Create and define up to 5 separate networks to segregate and contain vulnerable devices
  • Parental controls, web filtering, traffic control, and threat prevention put you in control over your network
  • Comprehensive VPN server solution with remote desktop and site-to-site tunneling provides flexible and secure remote connectivity

No independently attributable, year-stamped benchmark for this model is established in the available material, so a specific real-world speed figure would be misleading. Synology lists a maximum of 100 connected devices and separately reports at least 120 concurrently connected in its own real-world test, including at least 100 transmitting concurrently. Treat those as manufacturer reference figures under its test conditions, not a guarantee for every home.

Using the RT2600ac in a Synology mesh

Synology lists the RT2600ac as compatible with supported mesh combinations that include the MR2200ac and other Synology routers. Mesh Wi-Fi uses multiple compatible access points to extend wireless coverage across an area; the experience depends on placement, compatibility, and whether the points communicate over wireless or a wired connection.

Rank #3
Synology MR2200ac Mesh Wi-Fi Router
  • Dedicated Tri-band 2.13 Gbps (400+867+867 Mbps) bandwidth optimized for performance and reliability
  • Easy setup and remote management from web client or mobile app
  • Comprehensive parental management and easy-to-use inter face with Safe Access
  • Single Wi-Fi name and seamless roaming with 802.11 k/v/r support
  • Create advanced VPNs with WebVPN, Synology SSL VPN, and SSTP VPN capability

For an RT2600ac being added as an additional Wi-Fi point, Synology’s stated requirement is to upgrade it to SRM 1.3 or later and then perform a hard reset. Consult Synology’s product specifications and Download Center for the applicable compatibility and firmware information before setup. A hard reset can erase configuration, so save or document settings you need before resetting.

Is the RT2600ac still available?

Synology’s surfaced status information is inconsistent: one result describes the model as generally available with full upgrades and support, while another regional status result calls it discontinued. The Download Center lists the SRM 1.3.2 series, but a firmware listing alone does not confirm current retail stock or support terms in a particular country.

When its age matters—and what to compare

The RT2600ac is a Wi-Fi 5 model, so compare it with newer equipment based on the devices and connections you actually have rather than its combined nominal rate alone. Synology advises that its newer Wi-Fi 6 routers are the better direction for multi-gigabit plans, substantially larger spaces, or more than 100 Wi-Fi devices; that is the vendor’s guidance, not a universal threshold.
