To sync Shure headphones, put the specific model into Bluetooth pairing mode, then select its name in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings. The steps differ by model: AONIC 40 and AONIC 50 use different power-button hold times, while AONIC FREE enters pairing mode when removed from its case. Check the model name printed on the product or shown in Bluetooth settings before following a procedure.
Identify your Shure model first
Look for the model printed on the headphones or earphones, or check the name shown in your device’s Bluetooth menu. The correct pairing trigger and displayed Bluetooth name depend on the model. The procedures below apply to the AONIC 40, AONIC 50, AONIC FREE, and AONIC 50 Gen 2 USB-C adapter where noted; do not assume another Shure model uses the same steps.
How to pair Shure headphones with a phone or computer
AONIC 40
- Turn the headphones off.
- Press and hold the power button for six seconds. Release it when you hear the “Bluetooth pairing mode” prompt.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer and select “Shure AONIC 40.”
- Wait for the headphones to announce “Connected.” If pairing fails, Shure’s guide says to repeat the process. See the AONIC 40 user guide.
AONIC 50
- Turn the headphones off.
- Press and hold the power button for five seconds, then release it at the “Bluetooth pairing mode” prompt.
- In the source device’s Bluetooth settings, select “Shure AONIC 50.”
- Confirm the “Connected” prompt. If the first attempt does not work, repeat the pairing steps. See the AONIC 50 user guide.
AONIC FREE
For initial pairing, remove the earphones from their case; they automatically enter pairing mode. Select “SHURE AONIC FREE” in the phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings. For manual pairing, Shure’s guide specifies a powered-off state: hold the button on either earphone for about five seconds, then select the earphones in Bluetooth settings. See the AONIC FREE guide.

Pairing with the AONIC 50 Gen 2 USB-C adapter
The AONIC 50 Gen 2 includes a USB-C adapter pairing route for desktop use. The headphones can also pair directly with a phone over Bluetooth, so the adapter is not required for phone pairing. Shure’s guide says the adapter must be plugged into a computer; it will not work when connected to a phone or USB hub. The RMCE-TW2 guide also specifies that its adapter plays audio from one source at a time. See the AONIC 50 Gen 2 guide · See the RMCE-TW2 guide.
Reconnect when Shure headphones will not connect
Start with the guide for the exact model. For AONIC 40 and AONIC 50, Shure’s documented recovery involves clearing the product’s paired-device list through PLAY, removing the headphones from previously paired device menus, powering off, entering pairing mode again, and pairing anew. Because clearing stored pairings affects remembered connections, identify the model before taking that step. AONIC 50 Gen 2 has additional adapter-specific re-pairing instructions in its guide.

Use the PLAY app for compatible settings and firmware
Shure recommends the ShurePlus PLAY app for settings and firmware on compatible AONIC products. Pair the product with the mobile device, open PLAY, and check the app’s home or settings screen for an update prompt. Shure’s PLAY guide says both the product and mobile device must have at least 50% battery. Downloads may take up to 30 minutes; do not turn off the product before the update completes. See the ShurePlus PLAY guide.
