Choose Sync.com if you want a cloud library you can access and share across devices; choose SpiderOakONE if your priority is backing up computer files for later recovery. Both providers describe their services as privacy-focused and say they encrypt files before or on the way to their servers, but their main jobs differ. This recommendation is an inference from their published product descriptions, not a hands-on comparison.
Cloud storage and online backup solve different problems
A cloud-storage service is designed to keep files available in an online library so you can reach and share them across devices. Online backup is designed to protect data on your computer so you can restore it later. Sync.com emphasizes cloud storage, sharing, syncing and real-time backup. SpiderOakONE is backup-first and includes sync and sharing.
SpiderOak’s support article explains that users retain local copies while the service keeps online backups, and says an online backup service is not a substitute for cloud storage, or vice versa. SpiderOak’s explanation of cloud storage versus online backup was updated July 23, 2025.

Choose based on what you need to do with your files
Choose Sync.com for a cloud library and sharing
Sync.com is the closer fit if you want files stored online and available through a browser or apps on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Its product overview highlights syncing, private sharing, device controls and recovery. That makes it the more natural option when accessing and sharing stored files is the main task.
Choose SpiderOakONE for backup and recovery
SpiderOakONE is the closer fit if your first priority is protecting selected computer data and restoring earlier versions. Its backup-first design, historical versions and point-in-time recovery are more relevant to recovery than to maintaining a shared cloud drive. Its sync and sharing features are useful additions, but SpiderOak describes sharing as read-only and says the service is not a groupware platform.

How encryption and recovery claims differ
Encryption claims
Sync.com says files are encrypted before leaving a user’s device and describes its service as end-to-end encrypted. SpiderOak says SpiderOakONE uses client-side or end-to-end encryption, and its FAQ says the company cannot read files, filenames or folder structure. These are provider statements; the cited material does not establish an independent audit or prove that the two implementations are equivalent. See Sync.com’s security page and the SpiderOakONE FAQ.
Version history and recovery
Sync.com offers file recovery and version history, but the available retention period depends on the plan. Its free-plan page states up to 30 days of recovery and version history for free accounts; consult the selected paid plan for its applicable terms. Sync.com’s free-plan page describes the free allowance, while its individual pricing page lists paid plans.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
SpiderOakONE offers historical versions and point-in-time recovery. Its FAQ says version history remains available as long as it fits within the plan’s storage. That means the effective history is tied to storage capacity, rather than an unlimited retention period independent of the plan.
What the published information does not establish
- There is no current controlled head-to-head evidence here for upload or download speed, restore time, client resource use or reliability.
- The cited SpiderOak platform page documents desktop backup applications; it is not a complete statement of mobile-app availability or requirements.
- The providers’ encryption descriptions do not establish which service is more secure.
For those questions, verify the current product documentation for your operating system, plan and intended workflow rather than treating the services as interchangeable.
