A switching power supply, or switched-mode power supply (SMPS), converts electrical power by rapidly switching semiconductor devices and transferring energy through components such as inductors, capacitors, or transformers. A controller typically monitors the output and adjusts the switching to keep it regulated as input voltage or load changes.
What “switching power supply” means
“Switching” describes the method of power conversion: a semiconductor switch repeatedly turns on and off rather than acting as a continuously variable resistance. Energy-storage components and a control circuit shape that switching into the required output. The term does not specify one circuit design, output rating, efficiency level, or safety approval.
SMPS stands for switched-mode power supply, also commonly written as switch-mode power supply. The name is used for power supplies that rely on high-speed switching to regulate or convert electrical power.
How an SMPS works
In a typical switching converter, the switch alternates between on and off states. An inductor or transformer stores and transfers energy during switching cycles, while capacitors help smooth the output. Feedback circuitry senses the output and changes switching behavior when the input or load varies. The exact components and control method depend on the design.

Analog Devices describes a basic switching regulator as “a circuit that uses a power switch, an inductor, and a diode to transfer energy from input to output.” Some practical circuits use different component arrangements or integrate switching devices, so that description is a useful basic model rather than a universal parts list. Analog Devices’ switching regulator glossary provides the definition.
AC-DC and DC-DC switching supplies
A switching power supply can accept AC or DC; the term describes the conversion approach, not the input type. An AC-DC supply has an input stage and a switching converter that work together to produce the required DC output. A DC-DC converter starts with DC and changes its voltage or polarity. Their internal block diagrams are not necessarily identical.

Common switching topologies
A topology is the circuit arrangement used to perform conversion. Its name alone does not establish a product’s output rating, efficiency, safety approval, or whether its input and output are isolated.

Switching versus linear power supplies
A linear supply regulates by operating a pass element in its active region, while a switching supply controls energy transfer through repeated on/off switching. Switching devices can have lower losses when they operate mainly in those on and off states, and higher switching frequency can allow smaller magnetic components. Those potential benefits depend on the design and operating conditions; “switching” does not guarantee a particular efficiency, size, or temperature.
Switching also brings design challenges. Electrical noise, filtering, circuit layout, feedback stability, switching losses, component stress, and thermal behavior can all affect the result. A linear supply may be preferable in an application with different priorities, so compare actual supplies against the requirements rather than choosing by category alone.

For example, Analog Devices’ AN-140: Basic Concepts of Linear Regulator and Switching Mode Power Supplies describes a particular synchronous buck design converting 12 V input to 3.3 V output that can achieve greater than 90% efficiency. That is an example for that design, not a general efficiency figure for all switching supplies.

- Input voltage and whether the source is AC or DC.
- Required output voltage, current, and expected load range.
- Efficiency across the load range, rather than a single figure without operating conditions.
- Heat, physical size, noise and ripple, and transient response.
- Whether galvanic isolation is required and whether the specific design provides it.
- Applicable safety requirements and approvals for the intended use.
Isolation is a property of a particular circuit and implementation, not an automatic feature of every switching power supply. Check the individual supply’s specifications and documentation.
