When moving from Photoshop to GIMP, start with the job you need to do—not an assumed one-to-one match between their tools or shortcuts. These five practical workflows cover common edits: painting, isolating an area, controlling an edit with a mask, repairing small defects, and changing an image’s framing or geometry.
What to know before choosing a GIMP tool
GIMP groups its tools into categories including selection, paint and transform. That organization gives you a useful starting point: decide what part of the image should change, then choose a tool suited to that job. The tools below are practical picks, not an official ranking or claims of exact Photoshop equivalents.
Names and shortcuts below follow GIMP’s English (UK) 3.2 tool reference. Shortcuts can be changed in your setup, and they may differ in other versions or configurations. GIMP’s documentation page links to the online manual and other learning resources.
1. Paintbrush: make a brush-based edit
When to reach for it
Use the Paintbrush when you want to paint onto an image or make an edit with a brush. Its default shortcut is P in the cited English (UK) 3.2 reference. The GIMP tool reference lists Paintbrush among the paint tools.

How to approach the workflow
- Select the Paintbrush tool and inspect its tool options before editing.
- Choose brush settings that suit the area and the kind of mark you need.
- Work carefully over the intended region, adjusting the brush behavior as you go.
The brush and its settings are part of the workflow, not just a way to make a stroke. If the edit should affect only a defined part of the image, make a selection first or use a layer mask rather than relying on careful brushwork alone.
2. Selection tools: define where an edit applies
Choose a selection for the shape or edge
A selection limits an edit to a chosen area. GIMP’s tool reference includes rectangle, ellipse, free, fuzzy and color-based selection tools, among others. The selection tools reference describes the available tools.

- Choose a rectangular or elliptical selection for a simple geometric region.
- Use a free selection when you need to trace an area by hand.
- Consider fuzzy or color-based selection tools when the region is better identified by similar colors than by a simple shape.
Think about the boundary you need to capture: a clean geometric edge, a hand-drawn outline, or a region distinguished by color. The selection determines where an operation applies; it does not by itself make the operation easy to refine later.

Control what shows through
A layer mask controls where a layer shows through, letting you refine the visibility of an edit without treating the layer itself as the only control. This is useful when you want to adjust which parts of a layer contribute to the image as you work.

4. Heal: correct a small defect
Use it for focused repairs
The GIMP User Manual states: “The Heal Tool corrects small defects.” Its default shortcut is H in the English (UK) 3.2 reference. The GIMP User Manual’s paint tools documentation explains the tool, while the 3.2 tool reference lists its shortcut.

Reach for Heal when the job is a small defect rather than a broad change to the image. If you need a different kind of repair, choose according to the result you want instead of assuming every correction is a healing task.
5. Crop and transform: change framing or geometry
Crop to change the frame
Use Crop when you want to trim the canvas and reframe the image. The English (UK) 3.2 reference lists its default shortcut as Shift+C. A crop changes what remains in the frame; it is different from changing the dimensions or orientation of an image or layer.

Transform to change geometry
For geometry changes, GIMP lists tools including Scale, Rotate and Unified Transform. Pick based on the change you need: resizing, rotating, or applying a more unified transformation. The tool reference lists these in its transform tools section: GIMP transform tools.
Do not assume a single transform tool is the right choice for every edit. First decide whether you are trimming the frame or changing image or layer geometry; then select the corresponding tool.
How to build familiarity without importing Photoshop assumptions
- Identify the task in plain language: paint, limit an edit to a region, refine layer visibility, repair a small defect, or change framing or geometry.
- Choose the GIMP tool by that job, then inspect its options before applying the edit.
- Check the shortcut in the reference for your GIMP version and setup instead of assuming a Photoshop shortcut carries over.
- Use GIMP’s tutorials and manual when you need to learn a workflow beyond the tool name. The documentation overview also points to books about GIMP, including optional printed references.
