There is no single best replacement for LastPass: choose based on the plan limits, sharing, recovery, and migration workflow that fit your household or work. Bitwarden is a useful first comparison if you want a free starting point and published annual prices; Proton Pass may suit readers considering Proton’s privacy-focused ecosystem; and 1Password documents an import route from LastPass through its desktop app.
Which password manager should I switch to from LastPass?
Compare the services against your actual requirements before moving a vault. A low-cost plan may not cover the devices, sharing, or recovery options you rely on, while a provider’s own security description is not the same thing as independent validation.
- Bitwarden: Worth comparing if you want a free plan and clearly stated personal and family prices. Its security statements are provider-authored, so distinguish them from independent security evidence.
- Proton Pass: A candidate if Proton’s privacy positioning and wider ecosystem matter to you. Check the current price, plan limits, and import/export steps for your region and needs.
- 1Password: A practical candidate if you want a documented LastPass import path; its support guide uses the desktop app. Check whether its current subscription terms suit your devices, household, and sharing needs.
- Dashlane: It appears in current comparison coverage and the 2026 security reporting discussed below. Current official plan details and migration steps are not established here, so verify them directly before deciding.
For any manager, check total annual cost and billing terms, free-plan device or item limits, supported platforms and browsers, household or team sharing, account recovery and emergency access, passkeys and two-factor authentication, migration and export, and available independent security evidence. Plan terms can change; consult the providers’ current pages before purchase: Bitwarden pricing, Proton Pass pricing, and 1Password pricing.
What do the published Bitwarden prices include?
Bitwarden’s pricing page lists a free plan, Premium for $19.80 per year, and Families for $47.88 per year for up to six users. The listed prices are in USD, billed annually, before tax. Check the checkout page for the terms and price that apply to your location, and confirm that the plan includes the features you need.

How should I interpret password-manager security claims?
Bitwarden describes its encryption as end-to-end AES-256 and says it uses salted hashing and PBKDF2-SHA-256. Those are the provider’s descriptions of its approach, not a guarantee that eliminates risk. Likewise, LastPass’s security page describes its use of AES-256 and PBKDF2-SHA-256 and outlines infrastructure and security changes made after 2022. These are company statements, not independent validation. The 2022 incident remains relevant context when assessing trust; distinguish LastPass’s remediation claims from independently verified evidence. See Bitwarden’s security description and LastPass’s security page.
What the 2026 attack demonstrations do—and do not—show
ITPro reported in 2026 that ETH Zurich researchers demonstrated 12 attacks against Bitwarden, seven against LastPass, and six against Dashlane. Those figures count demonstrated attacks, not confirmed customer-vault breaches. ITPro also reported that vendors issued fixes for addressable issues and that there was no evidence of exploitation when the report was published. The report quotes ETH Zurich Professor of Computer Science Kenneth Paterson: “We were surprised by the severity of the security vulnerabilities.” Read ITPro’s coverage for the reported context; the counts alone do not establish which manager is safest for every user.

How do I move my LastPass data safely?
Use the official import or export instructions from the manager you choose rather than assuming that one product’s steps apply to another. 1Password’s support documentation confirms a LastPass import route through its desktop app; follow its current instructions at 1Password’s LastPass import guide.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Read the destination manager’s current migration instructions and identify which vaults, shared items, and record types its import supports.
- If the workflow requires an export file, treat that file as sensitive: keep it somewhere private, do not send it through email or a shared folder, and remove it securely after the import and verification are complete.
- Import using the destination provider’s specified method. For 1Password, the documented route uses its desktop app.
- Check that important logins, notes, and shared entries arrived correctly and that you can sign in to the new account and access it on the devices you use.
- Only after verification should you consider deleting the export file or closing the old vault. Keep access to LastPass until you have confirmed that nothing important was missed.
Should I add a hardware security key?
A compatible FIDO2 security key can be an optional extra layer for accounts that support it; it is not required to use a password manager. TechRadar identifies YubiKey OTP among Bitwarden Premium’s authentication options, but confirm that the particular key and authentication method work with the manager and other accounts you intend to protect. See TechRadar’s Bitwarden coverage.
