Before moving an Excel workflow to an open-source spreadsheet, identify the application and test your actual files. LibreOffice Calc is one possible choice, but the tool behind the claimed switch is not identified here. Calc can open and save Microsoft Excel formats; that does not guarantee every formula, layout, or macro will behave identically after conversion.
First, identify the spreadsheet app
“Open-source spreadsheet” does not identify a single product. LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc are distinct applications, and their documentation should not be treated as interchangeable. LibreOffice describes Calc as its spreadsheet component and says it can open and save Microsoft Excel formats. Apache OpenOffice also describes Excel import and saving in Excel format.
Those capabilities make Calc a plausible Excel alternative, but they do not establish which application a particular person used, whether it improved their workflow, or whether their setup worked offline. If you are following someone else’s workflow, confirm the app and version before relying on product-specific instructions.
Check your Excel workbooks before switching
Opening an XLS or XLSX file is only the first compatibility check. Saving it in another format and reopening it can expose changes in formulas, formatting, or behavior. LibreOffice’s Calc documentation discusses conversion and notes that some functions and behavior may differ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test representative files
- Choose copies of the workbooks you depend on, especially those with complex formulas, charts, conditional formatting, or linked data.
- Open each copy in the candidate application and inspect key sheets, formulas, totals, and printed output.
- Save a copy in the format you plan to use, close it, reopen it, and check the same results again.
- Keep the original Excel files unchanged until you have confirmed the converted copies work for your needs.
Give macro-heavy workbooks extra scrutiny
LibreOffice’s Getting Started Guide 26.2 says Calc can run some Excel Visual Basic scripts when the feature is enabled under Tools > Options > Load/Save > VBA Properties. “Some” is not a promise of universal VBA compatibility. If your workbook depends on macros, test the specific actions you need in a copy before moving the workflow. Confirm the menu labels in your installed release, since the cited guidance is for version 26.2.
Validate CSV imports instead of trusting the preview
CSV files can be interpreted differently depending on their structure and import settings. LibreOffice’s guide warns that not knowing the source CSV structure can cause errors or miscalculations. During import, check the delimiter and how text, dates, and numeric values are handled; then inspect representative rows and verify totals or other important calculations.

Confirm offline use on your own setup
Product documentation describing spreadsheet features does not, by itself, establish that a particular installation and workflow work offline. If offline access matters, install the application and test the tasks you rely on with the internet disconnected. Check whether the files and any linked data or other workflow dependencies are available locally. Treat offline operation as confirmed only for the setup and tasks you have actually tested.
Make the switch a workflow decision, not just a file-opening check
List the work you do in Excel and test each essential task in the alternative: editing and recalculating workbooks, importing CSVs, running macros, and using any connected data or document workflows you depend on. LibreOffice documents capabilities such as using spreadsheets as data sources for Writer mail merge and dragging database tables into Calc; these matter only if they are part of your work.

Move recurring work only after the test files produce acceptable results and the offline setup meets your needs. If a workbook fails a critical check, keep that task in Excel or investigate a compatible alternative rather than assuming that file-format support means a complete replacement.
