You can move much of your Android data to an iPhone, but the smoothest route requires doing it during the iPhone’s initial setup. Some items need manual transfer, and apps, account settings, messaging features, and cellular activation may not carry over exactly. Decide what you want to keep, check storage and carrier compatibility, then start the migration before finishing iPhone setup.
What to decide before switching
Whether an iPhone is a good fit depends less on a single feature than on what you already use and what you want your next phone to work with. Before buying or starting setup, consider:
- Services: Do you want to keep using Google Photos, Calendar, and other Google services, or move to Apple’s equivalents?
- Devices and accessories: Will your watch, earbuds, car system, and other devices work with the iPhone, or would switching require replacements?
- Apps and accounts: Are the apps you rely on available on iPhone, and can you sign in to them? Do you depend on app-specific data or settings?
- Messages: Which features matter in conversations with Android users, and do your contacts use iMessage, RCS, or SMS/MMS?
- Cost and storage: Does the iPhone’s price and available storage suit your budget and the amount of data you plan to move?
- Carrier support: Can your carrier activate your number or transfer your eSIM to the particular iPhone you plan to use?
- Interface: Are you comfortable learning different navigation, settings, and default-app habits?
Apple describes iPhone as easy to use and highlights customization, durability, battery life, and integration with its services on its Android-to-iPhone switch page. Those are Apple’s product claims, not an independent comparison or a guarantee that the iPhone will suit every Android user.
What can transfer from Android
Apple’s current Move from Android to iPhone or iPad guide lists contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, calendars, web bookmarks, mail accounts, accessibility and display settings, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, and call history. The exact items available depend on the transfer method and compatible devices.

Some free apps may be matched during the process when they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the feature. That does not mean every app, its data, or its settings will be recreated on the iPhone. Check important apps individually and make sure you know how to sign in before you give up access to the Android phone.
Apple says music, books, and PDFs need to be moved manually. Plan for those separately rather than assuming they will be included in the guided transfer.

How to use Apple’s guided transfer
Move to iOS is designed for the iPhone’s initial setup. If you have already completed setup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone and start again to use the guided flow, or transfer content manually instead. If you want the guided transfer, begin it before completing setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Prepare both phones. Connect them to power, keep them near each other, and check that the selected Android content will fit in the iPhone’s available storage. Install or open Move to iOS on Android if your transfer flow requires the app.
- Start iPhone setup. Follow the setup screens until you reach the option to transfer data from Android, then choose it.
- Connect the phones. Follow the iPhone’s instructions to connect through its temporary Wi-Fi network or a direct USB-C cable. Apple says a USB-C cable can make the transfer faster; Google’s Android-to-iPhone checklist describes a cable connection as more reliable than Wi-Fi. Check that both phones have compatible ports before choosing a cable.
- Select what to move. Choose the content you want to transfer and leave enough time for the selected data to copy. If you prefer to keep using Google Photos or Google Calendar, Google advises leaving Apple Photos or Calendar unchecked during selection, then signing in to Google’s apps on the iPhone.
- Keep the transfer active. Leave Move to iOS onscreen on Android. Do not answer a call or switch to another app during the transfer; keep both phones powered and close together.
- Wait for the iPhone to finish. Apple says to wait until the loading bar on the iPhone completes, even if Android indicates its part is done. Then finish iPhone setup and check the transferred content.
The transfer can take a while depending on how much you select. If it stalls or content is missing, Apple recommends checking available storage, restarting both phones, keeping the transfer app onscreen, disabling Android settings that disrupt Wi-Fi, and turning off cellular data before trying again. If the selected data exceeds the iPhone’s free space, some content may not transfer; free up space or repeat the transfer with a smaller selection.

Alternative transfer options and manual work
Compatible Android 17 devices
Apple also documents a no-app transfer option for compatible Android 17 devices. It starts from the Android transfer screen during iPhone setup and pairs the phones with a QR code. Supported content can include photos, contacts, calendars, call history, and messages; the guide also describes eSIM transfer as an option. This is not a feature to assume every Android 17 phone supports: check the Android manufacturer’s compatibility information and your carrier’s requirements.
After iPhone setup is complete
If you do not want to erase an already-configured iPhone, use manual transfer instead. Apple’s guidance separates manual movement by content type; music, books, and PDFs in particular are not part of the guided migration. Review Apple’s transfer guide for the method relevant to each item rather than expecting a single process to copy everything.

Keep Google services, but check accounts and defaults
Switching phones does not require switching away from Google. Google says to leave Apple Photos or Calendar unchecked in Move to iOS if you want to continue with Google Photos or Google Calendar, then install or open the Google apps and sign in on the iPhone.
Google’s checklist also calls out separate setup tasks for Google Account sign-in, contact syncing, passkeys, autofill, default apps, password-manager choice, and app accounts. Treat these as items to review after the move: a transferred mail account or app listing does not necessarily bring over saved credentials, app data, autofill behavior, or your preferred defaults. Confirm that you can access important accounts before wiping or trading in the Android phone.

Messages may not behave exactly the same
Apple lists message history and SMS among the content that can transfer, but that is not a promise of a perfect copy of every conversation, feature, or attachment. A 2022 UK Competition and Markets Authority review notes that conversion between iMessage and traditional SMS/MMS can lose some features or data. That is historical context about differences between formats, not a description of current transfer steps.
Cross-platform RCS encryption is also conditional. In an Apple Newsroom announcement dated May 11, 2026, Apple said end-to-end encrypted RCS was beginning a beta rollout for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Apple says an encrypted RCS conversation shows a lock icon. Because this is a supported-carrier rollout, do not assume every Android–iPhone RCS conversation is encrypted; check software and carrier support and look for the lock indicator. Apple says iMessage remains end-to-end encrypted and is the best way to communicate between Apple devices.
Check phone-number and eSIM activation with your carrier
Apple says phone-number, SIM, or eSIM activation may be available during the move, while some users may be directed to their carrier’s website to finish activation. Availability depends on the destination iPhone, Android model, carrier, and region. Before switching, ask your carrier whether your exact devices and plan support the activation or eSIM transfer you intend to use, and how to complete activation if the automatic option is unavailable.

What changes after the move
The migration is not just copying files: some routines depend on which apps and devices you use. Make a short post-setup check of the things that would cause the most disruption if they were missing:
- Sign in to essential apps and verify that their data is present or recoverable.
- Confirm contacts, photos, calendars, and files in the apps you intend to use.
- Set your preferred password manager, autofill option, and default apps.
- Test your phone number, mobile data, calls, messages, and any carrier-dependent features.
- Reconnect accessories and check compatibility with the iPhone before relying on them.
- Try common tasks—such as navigating settings, sharing files, and managing notifications—before deciding whether your old habits translate directly.
Make the switch on your terms
An iPhone may be appealing if you want Apple’s connected services and hardware-software integration; staying with Android may make more sense if your current devices, routines, or preferred services depend on it. No universal winner follows from the transfer process. The practical choice is the one that fits your budget, storage needs, accounts, carrier, devices, messaging expectations, and willingness to learn a different interface.
