A switched power supply—more commonly called a switched-mode power supply (SMPS)—regulates electrical power by rapidly switching semiconductor devices and controlling how energy moves through inductors, capacitors, and, in isolated designs, transformers. It can convert AC to DC or change one DC voltage to another.
What “switched power supply” means
“Switched power supply” is an informal name for a switched-mode power supply, also called a switch-mode power supply or switching power supply. The defining feature is its regulation method: a controller rapidly switches semiconductor devices and adjusts their operation to maintain the desired output. IEEE describes the switching, energy storage, and feedback-control principles; Omron’s FAQ gives a concise manufacturer definition.
An SMPS is a broad class of power-conversion circuits, not one particular adapter, connector, or topology. The term alone does not specify input range, output voltage or current, power rating, isolation, or physical format.

AC-to-DC conversion
A typical AC-to-DC supply first rectifies and filters incoming alternating current (AC) to create direct current (DC). A switching stage then rapidly modulates that energy. Inductors and capacitors store and transfer energy, and isolated designs may use a transformer. Further rectification and filtering produce the output. A feedback controller monitors output conditions and changes the switching behavior to regulate the voltage. Some AC-to-DC designs also include a power-factor-correction stage. STMicroelectronics outlines these AC-to-DC stages.

DC-to-DC conversion
An SMPS can also accept DC and convert it to a different DC voltage. In either case, the controller adjusts switching so the circuit transfers the appropriate amount of energy to its output.
Common SMPS topologies
A topology describes the arrangement of circuit components. Its name indicates a design approach, not a guarantee that a supply will suit a particular application.

These categories are described in IEEE’s switched-mode power supply overview and STMicroelectronics’ power-supply design material. A topology label by itself does not establish input range, output capability, isolation, or suitability.

Why use an SMPS, and what are the tradeoffs?
Switching devices spend much of their operation in low-dissipation on or off states, which can reduce power lost in the regulating transistor compared with linear regulation. Higher-frequency energy transfer can also allow smaller magnetic components. In return, an SMPS needs switching control and energy-storage components, and its actual efficiency and behavior depend on the design and operating conditions. Analog Devices’ AN-140 discusses the switching-versus-linear tradeoff.

AN-140 gives a narrowly defined example: for conversion from 12 V input to 3.3 V output, a synchronous buck can achieve greater than 90% efficiency, compared with less than 27.5% for a linear regulator. These figures are specific to that example, not universal ratings for either category.
When comparing an SMPS with a linear supply, assess efficiency and heat at the actual input and output conditions, regulation and transient behavior, size, noise or ripple requirements, isolation, cost, and complexity. There is no universal noise ranking or efficiency figure that applies to every design.

What to check when choosing or replacing one
Do not select a supply from the words “switched power supply” or a topology name alone. Check the application’s requirements against the supply’s actual specifications:
- Whether the input is AC or DC, and its required range.
- Required output voltage and current, including the power needed by the load.
- Whether isolation is required.
- Connector, enclosure, or board-mount format.
- Requirements for regulation, transient response, noise or ripple, and operating conditions.
- Applicable safety requirements for the product and market.
Safety-standard scope
IEC 61204-7:2016 specifies safety requirements for covered low-voltage switch-mode power-supply units supplied by sources up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC and providing AC and/or DC outputs. Its scope excludes inverter outputs that establish AC mains, and includes stand-alone and component SMPS. See the IEC listing for IEC 61204-7:2016 for the standard’s scope and edition. That standard’s listing does not establish every market’s current compliance obligations, so it should not be treated as blanket approval for all products or uses.
