To switch browser searches from Bing to Google in Windows 11, change the search-engine setting in the browser where you search. In Microsoft Edge, choose Google under Address bar and search; in Chrome, choose Google under Search engine. Windows’ Default apps setting is separate: it chooses which browser opens links, not which search engine that browser uses.

First, identify where Bing is appearing

“Bing” can appear because you are searching in Edge, searching in Chrome, or opening links in a browser you did not intend to use. The search engine is selected inside the browser. Windows controls the default browser separately.

  • If you type a query in Edge’s address bar, change Edge’s search-engine setting.
  • If you type a query in Chrome’s address bar, change Chrome’s search-engine setting.
  • If clicking a web link opens the wrong browser, change Windows’ default-browser setting.

Change Edge’s address-bar search engine to Google

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and search for something from the address bar using Google. This can add Google to the available choices if it is not listed yet.
  2. Select Settings and more > Settings.
  3. Select Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Select Search and connected services, then Address bar and search.
  5. Under Search engine used in the address bar, choose Google.

Microsoft’s instructions apply to Edge on Windows 11. The setting is in Edge, not Windows’ Default apps page. Menu labels may shift between browser versions; Microsoft’s current route is described in its Edge search-engine instructions.

Make Edge’s new-tab searches use Google

Changing the address-bar engine may not change searches typed into the separate search box on a new tab. In Edge’s Address bar and search settings, set Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to Address bar if you want new-tab searches to follow the selected address-bar engine. Google also documents this option in its instructions for making Google the default search engine.

Change Chrome’s search engine to Google

  1. Open Google Chrome and select Settings.
  2. Select Search engine.
  3. Choose Google as the search engine used for the address bar.

To review or manage search engines and site-search shortcuts, open Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. Google’s Chrome search-engine instructions cover the setting. If the option is unavailable or keeps reverting on a work or school device, an administrator may manage Chrome’s settings.

Set Chrome as the browser that opens links in Windows 11

Do this only if you also want web links to open in Chrome. It does not select Google as Chrome’s search engine.

  3. Search for Chrome, then select Google Chrome.
  4. Select Set default.

Google documents this Windows 11 procedure in its instructions for making Chrome the default browser. The two settings do different jobs: Chrome’s search-engine setting controls browser searches; Windows’ default-app setting controls which browser opens links.

Fix common problems

Google is not listed in Edge

Search from Edge’s address bar using Google, then return to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search. Microsoft describes that search as the way to make an engine available in the selection list.

Rank #3

Edge still shows Bing from a new tab

Check Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar. Set it to Address bar so the new-tab search follows the engine selected for the address bar.

Chrome’s search setting is locked or changes back

On a work or school device, an administrator may control browser settings. If the device is managed, contact its administrator rather than assuming the setting is broken.

The search engine changed unexpectedly

Check the browser’s search-engine setting first. Google notes that malware can be a cause of an unexpected change, but the change alone does not prove that the device is infected. If the setting keeps changing and you do not recognize the cause, investigate unwanted software using appropriate security tools.

What these changes do not cover

These steps change searches made through Edge or Chrome and, separately, which browser opens web links. They do not establish a way to replace Bing in Windows Search or taskbar web results with Google; the documented controls here are browser search settings and Windows’ default-browser setting.
