A swimming sea cucumber may intercept carbon-rich marine snow as it sinks through the ocean, before that material reaches the seafloor. A 2026 MBARI report describes observations of Pelagothuria natatrix in the Galapagos, where it was seen in the water column at depths of 250–650 meters. The findings suggest a possible role in midwater carbon cycling, but they do not measure how much carbon the species processes or stores.
What is the surprising link?
Most sea cucumbers live and feed on the seafloor, where they scavenge organic material that has already sunk. Pelagothuria natatrix is different: MBARI describes it as a sea cucumber that lives in the water column and feeds on particles while they are still descending. That makes it a potential midwater grazer in the ocean’s carbon pathway.
The pathway begins when plankton near the surface turn carbon dioxide into organic matter. Some of that material moves through marine food webs; some sinks as particles collectively called marine snow. Midwater animals can consume or transform it on the way down. Material that reaches the deep seafloor is then processed by scavengers and microbes.

How does the swimming sea cucumber feed?
MBARI describes specialized tube feet that form a webbed veil. The animal opens the veil like a funnel facing upward, then uses feeding tentacles to catch sinking marine snow. In this position, it can capture organic particles in the water column rather than waiting for them to settle on the bottom.

This feeding position is the key to the proposed carbon-cycle connection: the animal may intercept some organic matter before it reaches the deep seafloor. The observations support that mechanism, not a measured change in the amount of carbon stored in the ocean.
What did the Galapagos observations show?
In its October 8, 2026 announcement, MBARI reported that Senior Scientist Bruce Robison analyzed observations from 23 submersible dives in the Galapagos. The reported depth range for P. natatrix was 250–650 meters, or approximately 820–2,100 feet.

MBARI says this is the only one among more than 1,700 known sea cucumber species known to live this way in the water column. The reported observations and relatively high densities suggest the species could play an important role in tropical ocean carbon cycling. They do not establish a global carbon budget, a carbon-flux quantity, or long-term carbon storage.

How does this differ from the usual sea-cucumber role?
| Evidence or behavior | Habitat and feeding position | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Most sea cucumbers, as described in MBARI’s carbon-pathway explanation | Seafloor; scavenge organic material after it settles | They process material that has already reached the bottom. |
| Pelagothuria natatrix in the 2026 Galapagos observations | Water column; catches sinking marine snow | It may intercept some organic material before it reaches the deep seafloor. |
| Miller and Pawson’s 1990 swimming-sea-cucumber survey | Historical behavior research, including P. natatrix off the Galapagos | Provides background on swimming behavior; it is not the source of the 2026 carbon-cycle finding. |
What the finding does—and does not—establish
The report connects a distinctive feeding behavior with a plausible point of influence in the ocean’s carbon pathway. If the animals consume sinking particles, they can redirect some organic material into their own food web rather than letting all of it continue to the seabed unchanged.

That is not the same as proving that the species removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or locks away a known amount of carbon over the long term. MBARI’s announcement reports dive observations and a potential ecological role; it does not provide a quantified carbon contribution. The available result should therefore be read as evidence of a possible midwater process, not a carbon-sequestration estimate.

For historical context, J. E. Miller and David L. Pawson’s 1990 Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences monograph, “Swimming sea cucumbers (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea): a survey, with analysis of swimming behavior in four bathyal species,” includes study of Pelagothuria natatrix off the Galapagos. It concerns swimming behavior rather than the newer carbon-cycle analysis.
