Treat an unexpected sweepstakes win as unverified until you check it independently. In the United States, legitimate sweepstakes are free: do not pay to enter, improve your odds, or claim a prize. A demand for money, bank or card details, sensitive personal information, or immediate action is a serious warning sign.
Use the checks below before responding. They are general U.S. consumer guidance, not a determination about a particular promotion; state requirements and rules for specific promotion channels can differ.
Check whether anyone is asking you to pay
Stop if a notification says you must send money before a prize can be released. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that legitimate sweepstakes do not charge winners to claim prizes. Describing a payment as taxes, processing, shipping, insurance, or a release fee does not make the request trustworthy. The FTC’s guidance on fake prize, sweepstakes, and lottery scams explains this warning sign.
The FTC’s Advertising FAQs for Small Business also says that sweepstakes-type promotions requiring participants to make a purchase are illegal in the United States. Do not confuse that general guidance with a complete statement of every state’s rules or every kind of promotion.

Look for clear official rules and a free way to enter
Find the promotion’s official rules and check whether they identify the sponsor, eligibility requirements, entry period, prize, and how to enter without paying. Missing, vague, or hard-to-find rules are reasons to pause and investigate, not proof on their own that a promotion is fraudulent.
Requirements can vary by state and by how a promotion is conducted. For covered telephone prize promotions, the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule guidance describes specific disclosures, including information about odds and how to participate without paying. Do not assume those telephone-promotion requirements apply identically to every sweepstakes.

Verify the sponsor outside the message
Do not use a phone number, email address, link, or payment instructions supplied in an unexpected prize message as your only proof. Find the sponsor’s official website or contact details independently, then ask whether the promotion and notification are genuine. A familiar company name, government-sounding organization, or official-looking seal is not proof: scammers can impersonate real organizations.

Protect your money and personal information
Do not provide bank or card details, or sensitive personal information, to claim a supposed prize. Be especially wary if the sender asks you to pay through a wire transfer, gift card, cash, payment app, or cryptocurrency. These are payment methods that can be difficult to reverse. The FTC lists requests for money or sensitive information among the warning signs in its consumer guidance.
Notice pressure to act immediately
A message that insists you must act right away, keep the award secret, or pay before a short deadline is using pressure rather than giving you time to verify the claim. Slow down. Check the rules and contact the sponsor using details you found independently before sharing information or taking any action. What to do if you suspect a prize scam
- Stop responding and do not pay. Do not click further links or provide more information through the suspicious message.
- Verify independently. Contact the purported sponsor using details you located yourself, not contact information in the message.
- Report the offer. Submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also contact your state attorney general or local consumer-protection office.
- Use the channel-specific route when relevant. For a mailed promotion, report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. If your personal information was misused, use IdentityTheft.gov for next steps.

What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
A demand for payment is a strong reason to stop and treat a solicitation as a scam. A polished website or recognizable sponsor name does not establish that an offer is legitimate. These checks can help you spot warning signs and verify a sponsor, but they do not verify a specific promotion, calculate its odds, or determine which laws apply to an individual situation. For a particular offer, read its rules and consider the relevant state and communication channel.
