Choose Surface Pro if your work depends on Windows 11 desktop applications, Microsoft 365 administration, enterprise tools, a conventional file system, several peripherals, or a kickstand-and-keyboard laptop replacement. Choose iPad Pro if you want the lightest tablet, a tandem-OLED display, Apple Pencil Pro drawing and handwriting, and a touch-first workflow built around iPadOS apps.
Neither is universally better. Surface Pro is the lower-risk productivity computer when software compatibility and docking matter most; iPad Pro is the more elegant tablet for sketching, handwritten notes, media consumption and touch-oriented creative work. Compare complete kits rather than bare tablets, because both require separately purchased input accessories for a laptop-like setup and their battery claims use different tests.
Quick verdict
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop software, enterprise administration or specialist utilities | Surface Pro | It runs Windows 11 and supports the desktop file, peripheral and application model used by many workplaces. |
| A thin, light tablet for touch work, reading and handwriting | iPad Pro | iPadOS, the Apple Pencil ecosystem and substantially lower tablet-only weight favor direct touch interaction. |
| Drawing and handwritten notes | iPad Pro for a tablet-first workflow; Surface Pro for Windows creative applications | iPad Pro supports Apple Pencil Pro and tandem OLED; Surface Pro supports Surface Slim Pen 2 and desktop Windows software. |
| Multiple USB devices, docks and a conventional monitor setup | Surface Pro | The cited model has two USB-C/USB4 ports plus Surface Connect, while iPad Pro has one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port. |
| A laptop replacement with an integrated stand | Surface Pro | The adjustable kickstand is built into the device; the keyboard remains an additional purchase. |
| HDR-oriented visual work and a wide-color tablet display | iPad Pro | The tandem-OLED Ultra Retina XDR panel offers P3 color, very high contrast and HDR brightness specifications. |
That recommendation assumes the current generations described below. Microsoft sells both 12-inch and 13-inch Surface Pro models, while Apple sells 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models; screen size, processor configuration, cellular connectivity and regional availability can change the practical choice.
Current specifications compared
The table separates manufacturer claims from interpretation. Battery figures are not a head-to-head laboratory result: Microsoft and Apple use different test conditions, dates and workloads.

The 13-inch Surface Pro weight and battery values above identify the cited Snapdragon model and the separate dates of Microsoft’s testing. Do not merge those figures into one universal result. Likewise, the iPad Pro weights are Wi-Fi values; a cellular configuration can differ.
Surface Pro for work: when Windows is the deciding factor
Desktop applications and administration
Surface Pro runs Windows 11, so it fits workflows built around desktop versions of business software, enterprise administration consoles, file-system utilities, local development tools and peripherals that expect Windows drivers. This is a workflow advantage, not a guarantee that every Windows application is optimized for every Snapdragon configuration. Before ordering, check the software publisher’s support statement for ARM, emulation and required plug-ins.
Microsoft 365 users who depend on desktop Outlook, Excel add-ins, PowerPoint features, local templates, macros or administrator tooling will generally face fewer workflow changes on Surface Pro. A browser-based or cloud-only Microsoft 365 routine can work on either platform, but the iPad version remains governed by iPadOS app capabilities and its touch-oriented file handling.
Files, storage and peripherals
The cited Surface Pro Snapdragon specification lists removable 256GB, 512GB and 1TB SSD options. Two USB-C/USB4 ports let you connect storage, displays, card readers or other accessories while keeping another port available for power or a dock; Surface Connect adds a dedicated connection option. That layout is more forgiving for a desk with several devices.
iPad Pro has one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port. It can handle fast storage and the specified single external display, but a hub or adapter is often needed when a project requires several USB devices, wired networking, charging and a display at the same time. Decide whether that extra adapter belongs in your everyday kit rather than treating the tablet-only specification as the whole workstation.
Microsoft 365 and enterprise security workflows
Surface Pro is the safer default when your organization manages Windows endpoints, distributes Windows installers, uses Group Policy or expects a particular desktop security agent. iPad Pro can be excellent for email, meetings, document review and cloud services, but confirm that your company’s identity, VPN, device-management and line-of-business applications have supported iPadOS versions before switching.
iPad Pro for work: when a tablet-first workflow is enough
Touch-first operation
iPadOS is designed around touch, split views, multitasking gestures and tablet apps. That can make reading, annotating PDFs, presenting, field work and handwritten meeting notes feel more direct than a desktop interface. Apple describes iPadOS as including built-in apps and features designed for the tablet’s capabilities.

Windows 11 Pro provides more security and management features for this used Surface Pro 7 (+) Tablet, as well as supporting virtualization and remote access. Meanwhile, it supports multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, etc.
The trade-off is app and file-system constraint. If your work is primarily browser, document, communication and cloud storage based, iPad Pro may cover the daily tasks with less weight. If you regularly install desktop utilities, manipulate arbitrary folders, run plug-ins or connect specialized hardware, validate each dependency first instead of assuming an iPadOS equivalent exists.
Typing, pointing and posture
iPad Pro uses a Smart Connector and a keyboard-case ecosystem. The cited Apple specification does not establish a specific current keyboard SKU, so verify that the case, keyboard and trackpad you intend to buy fit the exact 11-inch or 13-inch generation. A keyboard case can make long documents practical, but it changes the tablet’s weight, thickness and lap stability.
Surface Pro’s built-in adjustable kickstand offers a wider range of screen angles for desk work, sketching and presentations. Its detachable keyboard ecosystem lets you remove the keys when using the device as a tablet, but Microsoft lists the Surface Pro Keyboard and pen as sold separately.
Which is better for drawing and handwriting?
Pen choice and app support
Both platforms support active pens. iPad Pro works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); Surface Pro is designed for Surface Slim Pen 2. For drawing, the pen is only half the decision: check that your preferred illustration, note-taking, 3D, photo or music application exists on the operating system and supports the pressure, hover or shortcut features you use.
Apple Pencil Pro is an optional accessory, not included in the tablet-only specification. Surface Slim Pen 2 is likewise an additional purchase. Include the pen, replacement tips and any charging solution in the complete-kit budget.
Canvas and display characteristics
iPad Pro’s tandem-OLED Ultra Retina XDR display is the stronger specification for contrast-sensitive visual work. Apple lists P3 wide color, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and up to 1,600 nits HDR peak brightness. ProMotion can adapt refresh up to 120Hz. Those figures are display capabilities, not a promise that every application or video uses HDR or the maximum refresh rate.
The 13-inch Surface Pro offers a 3:2 2880×1920 canvas and up to 120Hz, with an OLED option or a lower-contrast LCD configuration. The taller 3:2 shape is useful for portrait documents, coding and vertical timelines. Choose the OLED configuration if black levels and contrast are central to your work; choose based on software and posture rather than assuming the panel alone determines drawing quality.

Handwriting and annotation
iPad Pro’s lighter tablet form makes it easy to hold while taking notes or annotating a document. Surface Pro’s kickstand is useful when the device is on a desk and you want a larger Windows canvas beside a keyboard. For lectures, site visits or meetings, decide whether you prefer a detached slate in one hand or a supported screen with desktop file access.

iPad Pro media capabilities
The M5 specification includes hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW. That is valuable for editors who use iPad-optimized media applications and want a compact ingest, review or rough-cut device. Storage selection matters: high-resolution video consumes space quickly, and the iPad’s capacities are fixed at purchase among the listed 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB options.
Surface Pro desktop flexibility
Surface Pro’s advantage is access to Windows desktop creative applications and the broader desktop file-and-peripheral workflow. Confirm ARM support for the exact application, plug-ins, codecs and hardware drivers on Snapdragon models; an application that runs through emulation may behave differently from a native build, and the specification alone does not establish performance.
Color-managed work
iPad Pro’s P3 and tandem-OLED specifications are attractive for reviewing HDR photographs and video. Surface Pro’s OLED option can also suit contrast-sensitive work, while its LCD configuration has lower contrast. For color-critical delivery, use the calibration, reference-display and export settings required by your production application rather than relying solely on the panel label.
Portability: tablet weight versus complete kit
Tablet-only weight strongly favors iPad Pro. The 11-inch Wi-Fi iPad Pro is 444g and the 13-inch is 579g; the 12-inch Surface Pro is 686g and the cited 13-inch Snapdragon model is 895g. That difference is obvious when carrying a bare tablet or holding it for a long period.
The practical gap narrows after adding a keyboard case, pen, charger and hub. Surface Pro’s keyboard is detachable and its kickstand is built in, while iPad Pro needs its keyboard case to provide a laptop-style typing angle. Weigh the complete kit you will actually carry, including any USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter, rather than comparing only the headline tablet weights.
Battery claims and what they do—and do not—tell you
Microsoft lists up to 15.5 hours of local video playback for the current Surface Pro page, with active web figures of up to 13 hours for the 12-inch model and 11.5 hours for the 13-inch model. Its separate Snapdragon specification reports up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web use for Wi-Fi models, based on testing conducted in April 2024. The newer 15.5-hour claim identifies testing conducted in May 2026.

Apple lists up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web surfing or video playback for iPad Pro and up to 9 hours on cellular data. These are vendor estimates using different brightness, network, video and software conditions. Use them for direction, not for a precise cross-platform endurance ranking. A bright OLED HDR timeline, constant external storage, video encoding, cellular radio or an active pen can all change actual runtime.
Ports, docks and external monitors
Surface Pro’s two USB-C/USB4 ports and Surface Connect simplify a desk that combines a dock, storage, display, keyboard, mouse and power. The cited specification does not state a particular external-monitor limit, so check the configuration and dock documentation for the displays you plan to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsiPad Pro’s single Thunderbolt/USB 4 port supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz. That is a strong single-monitor specification, but a hub may be necessary for charging and additional devices. If your normal setup includes two monitors, multiple drives or wired networking, verify the exact iPadOS and hub behavior before committing.

Storage planning
Surface Pro’s listed Snapdragon models use removable SSDs in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. Removability can matter for an organization’s replacement or service policy, but confirm the exact model and warranty terms before planning a future drive change.
iPad Pro offers 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities. The specification lists those purchase options but does not describe user-removable storage. Choose enough capacity for local video, photo libraries, offline documents and creative caches, then use external Thunderbolt storage or cloud services for overflow where your applications support them.
Cellular connectivity
Apple’s battery specification distinguishes Wi-Fi use from cellular-data use, indicating that cellular configurations exist; availability and pricing depend on the region and model. The Surface figures cited here identify Wi-Fi models. If field connectivity is essential, compare the exact cellular edition, modem support, carrier compatibility and service cost rather than assuming that every size or processor configuration offers the same option.

Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- List every required application. Mark each as Windows desktop, browser, iPadOS or uncertain. Resolve uncertain items with the software vendor before choosing hardware.
- Choose the working posture. If you type at a desk and want a built-in stand, favor Surface Pro. If you hold the tablet, draw directly on it or annotate while walking between meetings, favor iPad Pro.
- Choose the screen. Select Surface Pro OLED when contrast is important and the 3:2 canvas suits your documents. Select iPad Pro when tandem OLED, P3 color and HDR review are central.
- Map your peripherals. Count monitors, drives, card readers, network adapters and power connections. Surface Pro starts with two USB-C/USB4 ports; iPad Pro starts with one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port.
- Price the complete kit. Add the keyboard, pen, charger, hub or dock, storage and subscriptions before comparing totals.
- Check connectivity and region. Verify Wi-Fi or cellular edition, carrier support, keyboard generation and warranty terms for the country where you will use the device.
- Validate battery expectations. Treat the manufacturer figures as directional because the test methods and dates differ; allow headroom for your brightness, workload and accessories.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Windows means universal Snapdragon compatibility. Check native ARM support, emulation behavior, drivers and plug-ins for every critical application.
- Comparing bare tablets to complete laptops. Include the keyboard and pen on both sides, plus a hub or dock where your desk requires one.
- Treating battery claims as a benchmark. Microsoft’s 2024 and 2026 figures and Apple’s current figures use different tests; they cannot establish a winner under your workload.
- Ignoring the single-port limit on iPad Pro. Confirm that your hub can provide the required display, storage, charging and networking combination.
- Buying storage for an imagined workflow. High-resolution video and photo libraries consume local capacity quickly. Choose the iPad capacity at purchase and verify whether a Surface SSD replacement fits your exact model and policy.
- Assuming a keyboard case is interchangeable across generations. Verify the exact size and model year before ordering an iPad Pro keyboard or Surface Pro Keyboard.
