Choose Surface Pro 11 if you need Windows 11 desktop software, PC-style multitasking, or a wider range of wired peripherals. Choose the M5 iPad Pro if your work is supported by iPadOS and you prioritize a tablet-first interface, Apple’s accessory ecosystem, drawing, or media use. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends first on your applications, then on screen size, ports, input devices, and the complete cost of the setup.
Before buying, list the applications, files, displays, storage, cellular service, keyboard, pen, and peripherals you actually use. Check each essential app with its publisher, and check compatibility with the exact Surface processor or iPad Pro size and generation.
The short answer: which tablet is better for your needs?
Surface Pro 11 is the closer fit for a conventional computer workflow. It runs Windows 11, uses a detachable keyboard with a built-in kickstand, and offers two USB-C/USB4 ports in the listed Snapdragon configurations. That combination suits people who depend on desktop Windows applications, established PC file workflows, or several wired accessories. Snapdragon models still require an application-by-application compatibility check; Windows on an ARM processor is not automatically identical to Windows on an Intel processor.

The iPad Pro M5 is the closer fit when the required software is available for iPadOS and you want a thin, tablet-first device for drawing, reading, video, photography, or media production. Apple offers 11-inch and 13-inch models, tandem OLED displays, and support for Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C). Its single Thunderbolt/USB 4 port can be enough for a simple setup, but a hub or adapter may be necessary for multiple wired devices.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Think of this as a workflow decision rather than a specification contest. A display refresh-rate figure, a battery estimate, or a processor name cannot tell you whether your accounting package, plug-in, scanner, printer, game, or corporate security tool will work.
Start with the operating system and required applications
When Surface Pro 11 makes more sense
Surface Pro 11 runs Windows 11. That makes it the natural candidate when your work requires a desktop Windows application, traditional Windows file management, browser extensions, a specialized driver, or a peripheral that assumes a PC. Microsoft describes Surface Pro as working “as both a tablet and a laptop” because the touchscreen and kickstand can be used without the keyboard while the detachable keyboard provides a laptop-like arrangement (Microsoft Support).
There is an important qualification: Surface Pro 11 is not one uniform hardware configuration. Microsoft lists consumer Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite models, while Surface Pro for Business documentation also lists Intel Core Ultra configurations. Windows edition and application behavior can vary by device and customer class. A program that works on an Intel Windows PC may require an ARM-native version, emulation, or a publisher-supported workaround on a Snapdragon model.
When iPad Pro M5 makes more sense
iPad Pro uses iPadOS. It is a strong fit when the applications you need have capable iPad versions and your work benefits from touch, Pencil input, instant-on tablet use, or Apple’s device ecosystem. The M5 generation is available in 11-inch and 13-inch models, so it can serve either as a highly portable tablet or as a larger canvas for documents and creative work.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not infer third-party compatibility from the M5 chip or from Apple’s hardware specifications. Verify the exact iPadOS version requirements, file-format support, plug-ins, external-display behavior, and account features with each software publisher. A mobile version may have a different interface or fewer features than its desktop counterpart.
A practical compatibility check
- Write down every application you use for work, study, administration, communication, and entertainment.
- Mark which tasks require a desktop-only program, a browser extension, a driver, a plug-in, or a local file utility.
- For each app, check the publisher’s support page for Windows 11 ARM, Windows 11 Intel, or iPadOS support as applicable.
- List peripherals such as monitors, storage drives, card readers, audio interfaces, printers, scanners, and security keys.
- Confirm the required connection, driver, power, and operating-system support for each peripheral.
- Test the most difficult application or accessory first. If it fails that test, a faster processor or higher display specification will not rescue the purchase.
Know which models you are comparing
Use the exact configuration names when comparing prices or specifications. “Surface Pro 11” can refer to different processors and customer editions, while “iPad Pro” can mean an 11-inch or 13-inch M5 model. Comparisons with an older M4 iPad Pro should be labeled as older-generation comparisons rather than treated as evidence about the M5 model.
| Product line | Processor configurations identified in the specifications | Operating system | Screen sizes identified | Important comparison caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 11 consumer | Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite | Windows 11 | 13 inches in the listed Snapdragon specification | ARM application compatibility can differ from Intel Windows compatibility. |
| Surface Pro for Business | Intel Core Ultra configurations are listed by Microsoft | Windows edition varies by device and customer class | Confirm the exact business configuration | Do not assume its processor, edition, or compatibility matches a consumer Snapdragon model. |
| iPad Pro M5 | Apple M5 chip | iPadOS | 11 inches or 13 inches | Check app and accessory support for the exact size and generation. |
Compare like with like: an 11-inch iPad Pro is not a direct physical equivalent to a 13-inch Surface display, and a Snapdragon consumer Surface is not the same software target as an Intel business model.

Screen: aspect ratio, panel technology, and working space
Surface Pro 11 display
Microsoft’s listed Snapdragon specifications describe a 13-inch 3:2 PixelSense Flow display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The taller 3:2 shape gives documents, web pages, and many desktop windows more vertical room than a widescreen panel of similar diagonal size. It can also reduce unused space when you work with portrait-oriented pages or code.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
iPad Pro M5 display
Apple lists tandem OLED displays for both iPad Pro M5 sizes, with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. OLED technology can be especially attractive for video, photography, illustration, and dark-interface work, while the 11-inch version favors portability and the 13-inch version offers a larger canvas. The two sizes are not interchangeable in a bag, on a stand, or when selecting a keyboard case.
How to choose between them
- Choose the Surface shape if document height and desktop window layout matter more than a widescreen media ratio.
- Choose the 11-inch iPad Pro when one-handed carrying, travel, and compact drawing are priorities.
- Choose the 13-inch iPad Pro when you want a larger tablet canvas and your iPadOS workflow benefits from it.
- Consider your lighting and content. Panel technology, aspect ratio, brightness behavior, and software scaling all affect comfort; no single headline specification establishes overall display superiority.
Ports and external displays can change the practical verdict
Surface Pro 11 connectivity
The listed Snapdragon Surface configuration has two USB-C/USB4 ports, a Surface Connect port, and a dedicated keyboard connection. Two USB-C ports provide more flexibility for charging, a display, storage, or another accessory at the same time, although a dock may still be useful for a permanent desk. The keyboard connection is part of the detachable Surface input system.
iPad Pro M5 connectivity
Apple lists one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port on iPad Pro M5. Apple also specifies support for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz. That capability does not remove the need for an adapter or hub when you want several wired devices, and the hub must support the required data rate, display output, power delivery, and storage format.
Count your connections before you buy
| Need | Surface Pro 11 implication | iPad Pro M5 implication |
|---|---|---|
| One monitor and occasional storage | Two USB-C/USB4 ports can simplify the setup. | Possible through the Thunderbolt/USB 4 port; verify the display and adapter. |
| Several wired peripherals | You may still want a dock, but there are two listed USB-C/USB4 ports. | Plan for a compatible hub or dock because one Thunderbolt/USB 4 port is listed. |
| Permanent desk installation | Surface Connect and a dock can reduce cable swapping. | A suitable USB-C/Thunderbolt dock can consolidate connections; confirm iPadOS support. |
| High-resolution external display | Confirm the exact Surface model and dock specifications. | Apple states support for one display up to 6K at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz. |
Battery claims are estimates, not a head-to-head test
Microsoft reports up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web use for Wi-Fi-only Snapdragon Surface models. Microsoft says its testing used preproduction software and devices, with local-video testing conducted in April 2024. Actual endurance varies with brightness, applications, wireless activity, accessories, and settings.

Apple’s current iPad Pro specifications list up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web surfing or video watching, and separately list up to 9 hours of surfing when using cellular data. Apple’s web-surfing and video modes are not the same protocol as Microsoft’s local-video and active-web tests. These figures therefore cannot prove that one device lasts longer in normal mixed use.
| Manufacturer and model | Published estimate | How it was described | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft, Wi-Fi-only Snapdragon Surface Pro 11 | Up to 14 hours | Local video playback; Microsoft’s test used preproduction devices and software, with testing in April 2024 | Not a common-protocol comparison with iPad Pro |
| Microsoft, Wi-Fi-only Snapdragon Surface Pro 11 | Up to 10 hours | Active web use | Not a guarantee for mixed work or other Surface configurations |
| Apple, iPad Pro M5 | Up to 10 hours | Wi-Fi web surfing or video watching | Not directly comparable with Microsoft’s test modes |
| Apple, iPad Pro M5 with cellular data | Up to 9 hours | Surfing over cellular data | Cellular use can differ from Wi-Fi use |
Keyboard, kickstand, and pen: the tablet is only part of the setup
Surface Pro 11 input
Surface Pro 11 is designed around a detachable keyboard and built-in kickstand. Microsoft lists compatible keyboards and the Surface Slim Pen (2nd Edition), while the product page says keyboards are sold separately. This arrangement can move quickly between a laptop-like desk position and a keyboard-free tablet position, but the keyboard is an additional purchase you must include in the budget.
iPad Pro M5 input
iPad Pro is tablet-first. Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and you select a separate keyboard or keyboard case if you need sustained typing. Pencil support can be central to drawing, annotation, and handwritten workflows, but confirm compatibility with the exact iPad Pro size and generation before ordering an accessory.

Input decision guide
- For long desktop-style typing, compare key layout, trackpad behavior, lap stability, and the way each device is supported on your desk.
- For handwriting and illustration, confirm the pen model, charging method, hover or shortcut features you require, and the applications you plan to use.
- For frequent tablet-only use, check weight, balance, stand angles, and whether the keyboard detaches or folds as you expect.
- For shared or managed environments, verify that the keyboard, pen, and device can be purchased and supported through your organization’s procurement channel.
Calculate the complete cost, not just the tablet price
Retail prices, current inventory, and accessory bundles are volatile, and no current price set is established here. Check the manufacturer or authorized retailer listing for the exact processor, storage, connectivity, and regional configuration. Then calculate the complete setup rather than comparing tablet-only prices.

Which tablet is better for particular kinds of work?
Choose Surface Pro 11 for Windows-dependent work
Surface Pro 11 is the safer starting point for users who need a full Windows desktop application, Windows-centered file and browser workflows, or a broad selection of wired PC accessories. Select the exact processor carefully: Snapdragon models and Intel models are different compatibility targets, and the business edition may have a different Windows configuration.
Choose iPad Pro M5 for iPadOS-first creative and media work
iPad Pro M5 is the better fit when your applications are already strong on iPadOS and your priorities include drawing, touch interaction, media consumption, portability, or integration with other Apple devices. Choose between 11 and 13 inches based on how much canvas you need and how often you carry it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose based on your desk and travel pattern
A Surface setup may reduce adapter dependence for a multi-device desk because two USB-C/USB4 ports are listed, though a dock can still be useful. An iPad Pro can be an excellent single-screen mobile workstation, but users with several wired devices should budget for a hub or dock. Neither design eliminates the need to verify the exact accessories.
A final buying checklist
- Name the three applications you cannot replace and verify support for the exact operating system and processor.
- Choose the physical screen size: 13-inch Surface, 11-inch iPad Pro, or 13-inch iPad Pro.
- Decide whether a 3:2 PixelSense Flow display or a tandem OLED display better suits your documents, art, video, and lighting.
- Count every simultaneous cable: monitor, storage, charger, audio, camera, reader, printer, or security key.
- Add the keyboard, pen, hub or dock, storage tier, and cellular service to the device price.
- Confirm the exact accessory generation and size before placing the order.
- Review return and support terms in your region, especially if an essential application or peripheral has not been tested on the new platform.
What the published specifications cannot answer
The official specifications identify the models, ports, displays, accessory compatibility, and manufacturer battery estimates. They do not provide a shared independent performance benchmark, a common-protocol battery test, hands-on evidence, or compatibility results for every third-party application. Treat the figures as selection inputs, not as a universal ranking.
If your essential workflow is Windows desktop software, start with the exact Surface Pro 11 configuration and verify ARM or Intel support. If your workflow is fully supported by iPadOS and you value a tablet-centered creative or media experience, start with the iPad Pro M5 size that fits your working style. That application-first check is more reliable than choosing on processor branding alone.
