Neither the current Surface Laptop range nor Dell XPS range is a universal winner. The right choice depends mainly on the screen size you can carry, whether you want touch or OLED, which ports and expansion you need, and whether the exact processor, memory and storage configuration suits your software.

Surface Laptop covers 13-, 13.8- and 15-inch touch models built around Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processors. Dell’s XPS family covers 13-, 14- and 16-inch models built around Intel Core or Core Ultra processors, with LCD and (on the larger models) OLED choices. Compare like-sized configurations rather than judging the families by name.

The short answer

Choose a Surface Laptop when an always-touch display, a conventional USB-A port, or a clearly specified lightweight configuration matters most. Microsoft lists touchscreens on all three current sizes, and the 13-inch model starts at 2.7 lb.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a Dell XPS when you want more display-format choices, including OLED on the XPS 14 and XPS 16, or when the XPS 13’s 2.2 lb starting weight is the priority. Dell also lists substantially different battery estimates by XPS size, so the exact model matters.

For office work, browsing, school and travel, both families have plausible configurations. For a demanding professional workload, do not infer a winner from “Snapdragon” versus “Intel” labels. Confirm that your applications, plug-ins, peripherals and drivers support the processor platform, then compare the specific memory, storage, display and port configuration you intend to buy.

The figures above come from Microsoft and Dell product pages accessed in 2026; those pages do not clearly state their publication year. “Starting” weight excludes heavier options, and the battery numbers are vendor estimates under different test descriptions, not a matched head-to-head result.

Match screen size before comparing brands

Screen size changes portability, workspace and often the internal configuration. The two families do not use identical size steps: Surface offers 13, 13.8 and 15 inches, while XPS offers 13, 14 and 16 inches.

Ultra-portable 13-inch choices

The Surface Laptop 13-inch and Dell XPS 13 are the closest mobility comparison. Dell lists the XPS 13 at a 2.2 lb starting weight, versus 2.7 lb for the Surface Laptop 13-inch. That half-pound difference can matter if the computer travels in a small bag every day.

Surface’s 13-inch display is touch-enabled and listed at 60 Hz. Dell’s XPS 13 uses a 2.5K LCD touch panel. Select between them by the chassis and configuration you actually need: the lighter XPS starting point favors frequent travelers, while Surface provides the touch-first Windows experience and a USB-A port according to Microsoft’s port list.

Middle-size options

Surface Laptop 13.8-inch weighs 2.96 lb and is listed with a touchscreen capable of up to 120 Hz. The closest XPS size is the 14-inch model, which starts at 3 lb and offers either a 2K LCD without touch or a 2.8K OLED touchscreen. The Surface is the simpler choice if touch is mandatory; the XPS gives you a choice between a lighter-specification LCD and a higher-resolution OLED touch configuration.

Larger screens

Surface Laptop 15-inch weighs 3.67 lb. Dell’s XPS 16 starts at 3.65 lb, so their listed starting weights are nearly identical despite the different diagonal sizes. The XPS 16 offers a 2K non-touch LCD or a 3.2K OLED touchscreen. Surface keeps touch standard and lists up to 120 Hz, while the XPS provides the broader panel choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A larger screen is useful for side-by-side documents, timelines and spreadsheets, but it consumes more space in a bag. Choose the largest size only if the extra workspace replaces an external monitor often enough to justify the carrying weight.

Display: touch, refresh rate and OLED

When Surface’s touch standard matters

Microsoft lists touchscreens across all three Surface Laptop sizes. That makes pen-free tapping, scrolling, handwriting with a compatible accessory and tablet-style interaction available without hunting for a special display SKU. The 13-inch listing is 60 Hz; the 13.8- and 15-inch listings go up to 120 Hz.

Surface is therefore the more predictable option for someone who has already decided that touch is essential and does not want to trade it for a non-touch configuration. The listings do not establish that every configuration has identical brightness, color coverage or finish, so check the exact SKU for those details.

  • Qualcomm Adreno GPU | Two USB4 40 Gbps USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort and Power Delivery
  • Windows 11 PRO | Fingerprint Reader

When XPS display choice is more important

Dell lists a 2.5K LCD touch display for XPS 13. On XPS 14, you can choose a 2K LCD without touch or a 2.8K OLED touchscreen. XPS 16 offers a 2K non-touch LCD or a 3.2K OLED touchscreen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OLED can be attractive for deep blacks, high perceived contrast and photo or video work, but it is a configuration choice rather than a family-wide feature. If you select an XPS LCD, verify whether it is the non-touch version before ordering. Conversely, do not pay for an OLED panel if your work is mainly text and you value the simpler, lower-resolution option.

Processors and practical workload planning

Surface Laptop listings use Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processors: X2 Plus on the 13-inch and X2 Plus or X2 Elite on the 13.8- and 15-inch models. Dell lists Intel Core for XPS 13 and Intel Core Ultra for XPS 14 and XPS 16.

No independent, matched benchmarks are published for these listings, and processor performance also changes with the selected chip, cooling design, memory, display and power mode.

Everyday productivity

For browser tabs, documents, email, video calls and cloud applications, prioritize keyboard comfort, display size, battery expectations and ports over the processor family label. A well-configured 13-inch machine can feel faster in daily use than a larger model overloaded with a high-resolution display and demanding background tasks.

Specialized and legacy software

If you rely on engineering tools, local development environments, audio plug-ins, virtual machines, corporate security agents or hardware with custom drivers, check support for the exact Snapdragon or Intel platform before purchase. Confirm the application publisher’s current Windows support statement and test any essential plug-in or peripheral during the return period.

Creative workloads

For photo, video and design work, the display choice may be more consequential than the family name. The XPS 14 and 16 offer OLED touch alternatives at 2.8K and 3.2K respectively; Surface offers touch and up to 120 Hz on its 13.8- and 15-inch models. Match the panel to your color-management requirements and verify that your software uses the system’s graphics hardware as expected.

Memory and storage: verify the exact SKU

Microsoft’s comparison lists 16 GB as the starting memory for Surface Laptop, with maximum memory depending on screen size. Listed storage ranges from 256 GB to 1 TB, also depending on size.

Dell’s comparison listing does not provide enough memory or storage detail for XPS 13, 14 or 16. Do not assume that every XPS size starts with the same RAM or drive, or that a retailer’s headline configuration matches Dell’s base model. Record the exact memory and SSD capacities before you place an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much capacity to plan for

  • 16 GB: Microsoft’s listed starting point for Surface is a sensible baseline for general Windows work, but heavy browser use, development tools and creative applications can consume it quickly.
  • 256 GB: This is the low end of Microsoft’s listed Surface storage range. It can work for cloud-first users, but a large photo library, games or offline project files will reduce free space rapidly.
  • 512 GB to 1 TB: These capacities provide more room for local files and applications. Confirm which capacity is available at your chosen screen size and whether the drive can be replaced.

Dell’s unspecified memory and storage figures make the configuration page, not the family name, the source of truth. Save a copy of the order summary so you can verify what was promised if a retailer substitutes a different SKU.

Ports and expansion

Surface Laptop port list

Microsoft lists USB-C and USB-A on all three Surface Laptop sizes. The 13.8- and 15-inch models additionally list USB4 and Surface Connect. The 15-inch model also lists a MicroSDXC Express card reader.

That combination reduces the need for adapters when you use older USB-A accessories, and the card reader can simplify camera-file transfers on the 15-inch model. The listing does not state that every USB-C connector has identical charging, display or USB4 behavior, so check the detailed technical specification for the specific size.

XPS port information

Dell’s comparison listing does not provide port details for the XPS models. Treat ports as an unresolved purchase check: inspect the exact configuration, count the connectors you need, and budget for a dock or adapter if your monitor, storage, network or card-reader setup requires one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical port checklist

  • Count the number of USB-C connections needed while charging.
  • Check whether your existing USB-A devices require an adapter.
  • Confirm external-monitor standards and the number of displays supported by the exact model.
  • Verify whether a memory-card reader is built in or requires a dongle.
  • Include the cost and weight of a dock in your travel setup if the laptop lacks a required connector.

Battery estimates: useful direction, not a promise

Microsoft publishes two Surface methods: local video playback and active web browsing. Dell publishes streaming estimates. Because the activities and test procedures differ, the figures cannot establish which family lasts longer in the same real-world workload.

Model Vendor’s stated method Published maximum
Surface Laptop 13-inch Local video playback Up to 22.5 hours
Surface Laptop 13-inch Active web browsing Up to 18 hours
Surface Laptop 13.8-inch Local video playback Up to 20 hours
Surface Laptop 13.8-inch Active web browsing Up to 16 hours
Surface Laptop 15-inch Local video playback Up to 19 hours
Surface Laptop 15-inch Active web browsing Up to 14 hours
Dell XPS 13 Streaming Up to 17 hours
Dell XPS 14 Streaming Up to 31 hours
Dell XPS 16 Streaming Up to 31 hours

Microsoft explicitly notes that battery life varies. Screen resolution, OLED versus LCD, processor choice, brightness, wireless activity, applications and power settings all affect the result. Use the estimates to compare models within each vendor’s method, then look for independent testing of the exact configuration if runtime is a deciding factor.

Which laptop fits common priorities?

Choose Surface Laptop if you want touch without a configuration gamble

  • You require a touchscreen at any available size.
  • You prefer the 13.8- or 15-inch models’ listed refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.
  • You need USB-A and want the larger models’ listed USB4 and Surface Connect ports.
  • You want Microsoft’s memory and storage starting points clearly stated before purchase.

Choose Dell XPS if you value maximum display choice

  • You want the lightest listed starting weight: 2.2 lb for XPS 13.
  • You are choosing between LCD and OLED on a 14- or 16-inch laptop.
  • You want a non-touch panel, which Dell lists for the XPS 14 and XPS 16 LCD configurations.
  • You prefer a 3.2K OLED option on the 16-inch model for a large, high-resolution workspace.

Choose by travel pattern

For daily rail, campus or airline travel, start with the 13-inch class and compare the complete packed weight, charger and adapters. The XPS 13 has the lower listed starting weight, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch keeps touch and USB-A in the stated configuration.

For a desk-and-home routine, the 14-inch or 13.8-inch models add workspace without reaching the 15- or 16-inch class. For a laptop that replaces a monitor, compare the Surface 15-inch with XPS 16 and decide whether touch, OLED or the exact port selection is the deciding feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying checklist for either family

  1. Set a maximum carrying weight. Include the charger, protective sleeve, dock and adapters, not just the laptop’s listed starting weight.
  2. Choose touch, non-touch or OLED. On Surface, touch is listed across all sizes. On XPS, verify whether the selected 14- or 16-inch panel is LCD non-touch or OLED touch.
  3. Confirm the processor. Record the exact Snapdragon X2 Plus/X2 Elite or Intel Core/Core Ultra chip, not merely the family name.
  4. Check software compatibility. Validate essential applications, plug-ins, drivers and peripherals for the chosen processor platform.
  5. Record RAM and SSD capacity. Microsoft’s figures vary by Surface size; Dell’s comparison listing does not state enough detail, so inspect the SKU.
  6. Inventory your ports. Match every monitor, drive, phone, card and accessory to the laptop’s actual connectors.
  7. Interpret battery claims correctly. Compare local-video, web-browsing and streaming figures only within their stated methods.
  8. Verify the return policy. Use the return window to test your applications, displays, peripherals and real travel routine.

Final recommendation

Buy the Surface Laptop when your decision starts with touch, USB-A, or a straightforward 13-, 13.8- or 15-inch choice. Buy the Dell XPS when the lightest 13-inch starting weight or the 14- and 16-inch LCD-versus-OLED selection matters more. If neither priority dominates, compare similarly sized configurations line by line: display type, processor, RAM, SSD, ports, charger and total weight. The exact SKU—not the Surface or XPS badge—determines whether the laptop is right for you.
