Choose the Surface Laptop Ultra if your work requires Windows or a verified NVIDIA/CUDA workflow; choose a MacBook Pro if you need macOS or its 14.2-inch or 16.2-inch size better fits your work. The Surface is a newly announced 15-inch touchscreen with a $2,599 starting MSRP, while Apple lists MacBook Pro models in two display sizes. There is not yet a matched independent comparison to establish which is faster, lasts longer, or offers better value.
Start with the operating system and the apps you need
For many buyers, the deciding factor is not a headline specification but whether the laptop runs the required operating system, applications, plug-ins, peripherals, and work processes. Microsoft positions the Surface Laptop Ultra around Windows and NVIDIA RTX Spark, CUDA, local AI, and professional workflows. That describes Microsoft’s intended use cases; it does not independently establish how well every specific application performs.
Apple’s comparison page identifies current MacBook Pro models but does not provide application-by-application compatibility details in the inspected material. Before buying either machine, confirm support for your exact software and configuration with the software developer or workflow provider—especially if your work depends on specialized plug-ins, CUDA, or a particular device.

- Consider Surface Laptop Ultra if you require Windows or have confirmed that an NVIDIA/CUDA-dependent workflow works on the intended model.
- Consider MacBook Pro if you require macOS or a particular Mac-compatible workflow.
- Do not infer compatibility from product positioning: verify the specific application, plug-ins, peripherals, and workflow you use.
Compare the screen by size and how you work
Surface Laptop Ultra has a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen. Microsoft says the display is optimized for touch, but Surface Pen, Surface Slim Pen, and similar pen input are not supported. It may suit someone who wants to interact with a laptop screen by touch, but it is not a pen-enabled drawing or handwriting device according to Microsoft’s stated support.

Apple lists MacBook Pro models with 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR displays. Those give buyers a smaller-screen and a larger-screen option; neither is the same size as the Surface’s 15-inch display.
What the HDR brightness figure does—and does not—say
Microsoft claims the Surface Laptop Ultra reaches 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, measured with HDR content over a 10 percent window. Microsoft says sustained and SDR brightness are lower. It also claims peak HDR brightness is up to 25% higher than the published MacBook Pro M5 Pro specifications as of October 1, 2026. These are Microsoft’s published specifications and comparison, not an independent, matched display test. The peak figure should not be read as a sustained brightness level for an entire screen or as a guarantee of everyday viewing brightness.

What is known about price and buying dates
Microsoft announced a $2,599 starting MSRP for Surface Laptop Ultra. Pre-orders opened October 7, 2026, and Microsoft says availability begins October 16, 2026. The starting price is not a configuration-matched comparison with a MacBook Pro; region and configuration can affect what a buyer pays.
Apple’s inspected comparison page lists the MacBook Pro display sizes but its captured price fields did not render usable prices. A fair value comparison therefore requires checking current local prices for configurations that are as close as practical in screen size, chip, memory, and storage. The available information does not establish a matched price comparison.

Time-limited Microsoft trade-in offer
Microsoft announced up to $1,000 cash back for qualifying MacBook Pro trade-ins with a Surface Laptop Ultra purchase. The offer is limited to eligible purchases through Microsoft Store online in the US and Canada from October 7 through November 23, 2026; conditions and claim requirements apply. “Up to” is not a guaranteed payout. Check Microsoft’s current offer terms and your eligibility before including it in your budget.
Do not decide on battery life or performance claims alone
Microsoft’s battery disclosures describe tests on pre-production devices and software, with separate procedures for local video playback and web browsing. Microsoft also warns that battery life varies significantly with settings, use, and other factors. Those vendor test results should not be treated as a guaranteed runtime, and results from unlike test methods cannot be directly compared.

The available evidence does not establish a matched independent test of Surface Laptop Ultra and MacBook Pro performance, sustained workloads, thermals, noise, battery life, or usability. If your purchase depends on one of those factors, wait for independent testing under the workload you care about rather than treating product positioning or a peak specification as proof of a winner.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the required OS. Establish whether your work needs Windows or macOS before comparing hardware.
- Check the exact workflow. Verify application, plug-in, peripheral, and CUDA support on the specific model and configuration you intend to buy.
- Choose the screen form that fits. The Surface offers a 15-inch touchscreen but no supported pen input; MacBook Pro models come in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes.
- Match configurations and local prices. Compare chip, memory, storage, screen size, region, and current price rather than comparing a starting MSRP with an unmatched configuration.
- Wait for relevant independent tests if needed. This matters if sustained speed, battery runtime, thermals, noise, or real-world application behavior will determine whether the laptop meets your needs.
Which one should you buy?
Surface Laptop Ultra is the more plausible fit when Windows is required or a confirmed NVIDIA/CUDA workflow makes it a candidate. MacBook Pro is the more plausible fit when macOS is required or one of Apple’s listed display sizes better suits the work. Neither choice can be declared the overall performance or value winner from the published product information alone; make the decision around confirmed software support, the configuration you can actually buy, and evidence relevant to your workload.
