Ice VII and superionic ice are not the same phase. Ice VII is a proton-disordered molecular crystal: oxygen atoms form a body-centred-cubic (bcc) framework, while hydrogen remains associated with water molecules in a disordered hydrogen-bond network. Superionic ice keeps an ordered oxygen lattice but allows hydrogen ions to move through it in a liquid-like way. That mobile proton sublattice gives superionic ice far greater ionic conductivity and makes it a solid–liquid hybrid at the microscopic level.
The distinction matters in high-pressure physics and planetary science. Ice VII can exist over a broad pressure range, including pressures above roughly 2 GPa when water freezes at room temperature. Superionic behavior requires substantially higher temperature at high pressure, with different superionic structures appearing as compression and heating proceed. Laboratory measurements and calculations therefore treat “superionic ice” as a family of phases, not as a single crystal identical to ice VII.
Ice VII and superionic ice in one sentence
Ice VII has an ordered oxygen scaffold but hydrogen positions that are disordered yet still molecularly localized; superionic ice has an ordered oxygen scaffold and a hydrogen sublattice that diffuses continuously through the scaffold. Oxygen carries the crystal structure in both cases, but proton mobility changes the phase’s electrical, thermodynamic and planetary significance.

A molecular crystal with a bcc oxygen lattice
Ice VII is a high-pressure form of water made from water molecules arranged around a body-centred-cubic oxygen lattice. Scientific Reports described it as “a crystal of water molecules formed into a bcc oxygen lattice and a random hydrogen-bond network.” The oxygen atoms occupy the long-range lattice sites, while the orientations of the water molecules and the associated hydrogen bonds are disordered.

“Disordered” does not mean that hydrogen behaves like a free liquid. In ice VII, each proton remains tied to the local hydrogen-bond network on the timescale relevant to the crystal structure. Defects and pressure-dependent ionic processes can still carry charge, but the hydrogen sublattice is not freely flowing through the oxygen framework.
Where ice VII forms
At room temperature, liquid water freezes into ice VII at pressures above approximately 2 GPa, according to the 2014 Scientific Reports study. That value is an approximate phase-boundary guide rather than a universal threshold: the exact transition depends on temperature, compression path, sample history and measurement method. Ice VII is stable over a broad high-pressure range, which is why it commonly serves as the starting material in shock-compression and static-compression experiments.
What superionic ice is
A crystal lattice with liquid-like proton motion
Superionic ice forms when water is compressed and heated enough that hydrogen ions can move rapidly through an oxygen lattice that remains ordered. The oxygen atoms still provide a solid crystal framework, but the hydrogen sublattice loses the localized arrangement associated with individual water molecules. Jiming Sun and colleagues summarized the state in Nature Communications as: “In superionic ice liquid hydrogen coexists with a crystalline oxygen sublattice.”

Melting destroys long-range order in the oxygen atoms as well as in the hydrogen network. In a superionic phase, oxygen retains crystalline order while protons diffuse through available sites and pathways. The result combines a solid-like structural backbone with liquid-like ionic transport.
Superionic ice is a family of structures
There is no single oxygen symmetry that defines every superionic phase. High-pressure calculations and experiments have reported close-packed or face-centred-cubic (fcc) oxygen lattices and, at still higher pressure, a monoclinic P21/c oxygen lattice. The phrase “superionic ice” therefore describes a transport state—rapid proton diffusion in an ordered oxygen lattice—across several possible crystal structures.

How the structures differ
Ice VII: oxygen order, molecular hydrogen bonding
The bcc oxygen arrangement gives ice VII a recognizable crystal framework, but the hydrogen bonds are statistically random. Individual molecules can reorient and defects can move, yet the crystal is still described as molecular water. The oxygen lattice is therefore only half of the structural story: the other half is the absence of a unique, repeating hydrogen-bond orientation.
Superionic phases: oxygen order, delocalized hydrogen
When temperature rises at high pressure, the barriers that confine protons to particular hydrogen-bond positions become sufficiently small for sustained diffusion. Hydrogen no longer merely reorients between fixed molecular arrangements; it travels through the oxygen lattice. The oxygen positions can remain sharply ordered in diffraction even while hydrogen positions are dynamically averaged by motion.

At moderate conditions discussed in high-pressure studies, the oxygen lattice can transform from bcc to fcc as the superionic state appears. At higher compression, calculations identify a P21/c oxygen arrangement as another competing superionic structure. These are distinct phases, not alternate names for ice VII.
Why superionic ice conducts electricity so well
Charge carriers in ice VII
Ice VII is not a perfect electrical insulator. Its conductivity changes with pressure and can involve ionic defects and proton-transfer processes in the hydrogen-bond network. A room-temperature study reported a conductivity maximum near 10 GPa. That peak is a property of the defect and pressure regime measured; it should not be interpreted as evidence that ice VII has become superionic.
Proton transport in a superionic lattice
In a superionic phase, the mobile species are hydrogen ions (protons) moving through a comparatively rigid oxygen framework. Because many protons participate in diffusion rather than only rare defects, the ionic conductivity is much larger. A 2019 Nature report predicted proton ionic conductivity greater than 100 S/cm under superionic conditions.
Conductivity does not change identically for every superionic structure. Nature Communications reported an abrupt conductivity change at the boundary between the solid phase and an fcc-superionic phase. By contrast, the transition from the solid phase to a P21/c-superionic phase can produce a continuous conductivity change. The difference reflects how proton pathways develop in each oxygen lattice, not a disagreement about the definition of superionicity.
Anisotropic transport in the P21/c phase
The P21/c superionic phase is predicted to have strongly anisotropic, quasi-two-dimensional proton diffusion. Protons move much more readily along certain crystallographic directions or planes than across them. A bulk conductivity measurement can therefore average together very different microscopic pathways; the phase’s symmetry and texture matter when interpreting the number.
Pressure and temperature: when each phase is stable
Ice VII at relatively lower temperature
Ice VII occupies a broad high-pressure field and can be produced by compressing water to above roughly 2 GPa at room temperature. Its stability field extends far beyond that threshold, but pressure alone does not guarantee superionic behavior. If the sample remains comparatively cool, the oxygen lattice can stay bcc while hydrogen remains in a disordered molecular network.
Heating drives superionic behavior
Superionicity requires the combined effect of compression and heating. Experiments and simulations examine transitions from tens of gigapascals through hundreds of gigapascals and, in some calculations, into the terapascals. Boundaries shift with compression path, isotope composition and the method used to determine the phase line, so a single pressure–temperature pair should not be presented as a universal superionic threshold.

One shock-compression study estimated melting near 5,000 K at 190 GPa along the shocked ice-VII Hugoniot. That estimate marks the temperature at which the shocked material approaches full melting on that path; it is not the temperature at which every sample becomes superionic. Superionic fields lie between molecular-solid and fully liquid behavior and must be identified with structural and transport measurements.

Static compression, laser-driven shocks and other loading methods reach different combinations of pressure, temperature and duration. Compression can heat a sample, while shock loading can create a nonequilibrium state that evolves during the measurement. Hydrogen and deuterium also have different masses and quantum behavior, so isotope substitution can shift transition boundaries. Reported phase diagrams should therefore be read with their loading history and composition attached.
What experiments have actually observed
2014: conductivity and the ice-VII baseline
The 2014 Scientific Reports work established the useful ice-VII reference picture: a bcc oxygen lattice, a random hydrogen-bond network, freezing from liquid water above about 2 GPa at room temperature, and a conductivity peak near 10 GPa. These observations show that ice VII has pressure-sensitive charge transport without requiring a superionic hydrogen sublattice.
2017: shock evidence for superionic conduction
A 2017 shock-compression study measured electrical conductivity and thermodynamic behavior in shocked ice VII. The combined signatures were consistent with superionic conduction under planetary-interior conditions. Shock data are especially valuable because they reach high temperature and pressure simultaneously, but they also require careful interpretation of the rapidly changing sample state.
2019: diffraction of the fcc superionic phase
A 2019 nanosecond X-ray diffraction experiment directly resolved a transition from a bcc ice phase to an fcc phase with superionic behavior. The researchers named the fcc phase ice XVIII. The diffraction result is important because it observes the oxygen-lattice change while transport measurements identify the accompanying proton mobility; it is not merely an inference from a conductivity increase.

A 2021 synchrotron X-ray and optical study identified first-order transitions to bcc and fcc oxygen lattices. Changes in density, optical conductivity and fusion enthalpy were used together to assign the high-temperature phases as superionic. Using several observables reduces the risk of mistaking ordinary heating, defects or partial melting for a distinct superionic phase.
Calculations from 280 GPa to 1.3 TPa
Early high-pressure calculations discussed competing superionic phases across approximately 280 GPa to 1.3 TPa. Those results show why “superionic ice” should not be treated as one fixed structure: increasing compression can change which oxygen lattice is energetically favored and how protons move through it.

How scientists distinguish superionic ice from ordinary ice VII
1. Determine the oxygen lattice by diffraction
X-ray diffraction is primarily sensitive to the oxygen framework because oxygen contributes most of the scattering intensity in these dense samples. A bcc pattern supports ice VII, while an fcc or P21/c pattern indicates a different oxygen structure. Diffraction alone, however, does not prove that protons are liquid-like; it must be combined with transport or thermodynamic evidence.
2. Measure electrical or optical conductivity
A sharp or unusually large conductivity increase supports the onset of mobile proton transport. Optical conductivity provides a complementary probe when electrical contacts are difficult to use in a nanosecond experiment. The transition shape matters: an abrupt jump is associated with the reported solid-to-fcc-superionic boundary, whereas the P21/c route can be continuous.

3. Track density and enthalpy changes
First-order transitions can produce discontinuities in density and fusion enthalpy. The 2021 synchrotron study used these changes together with diffraction and optical conductivity to identify superionic phases. A single signal is less decisive because pressure, temperature gradients and defects can also alter conductivity or density.
4. Compare the loading path with a phase diagram
The same nominal pressure can correspond to different temperatures and structures after static compression or a shock. Researchers therefore compare the measured pressure–temperature trajectory with calculated or experimentally mapped stability fields and report uncertainty from the compression path, isotope and diagnostic timing.
Is ice XVIII simply another name for superionic ice?
No. Ice XVIII is the name given to the fcc superionic phase directly resolved in the 2019 nanosecond X-ray diffraction experiment. “Superionic ice” is the broader category covering any phase with an ordered oxygen lattice and liquid-like proton diffusion. Ice XVIII identifies one experimentally observed member of that category, while bcc- and P21/c-based superionic phases represent other structural possibilities discussed in later measurements and calculations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could Uranus and Neptune contain superionic ice?
Why the idea is physically plausible
Uranus and Neptune are rich in volatile materials, including water, and their interiors reach pressures and temperatures far beyond terrestrial conditions. Laboratory phase fields and planetary-interior models place portions of water-rich layers in the range where superionic phases could exist. A superionic layer would combine substantial mass with high ionic conductivity, making it a plausible participant in the electrical environment deep inside an ice giant.
Possible effects on magnetic fields
Planetary magnetic fields are generated by moving electrically conductive material. A mobile-proton water layer could contribute to dynamo action or alter where that action occurs. This idea is relevant to the unusual, strongly tilted and offset magnetic fields measured for Uranus and Neptune, but laboratory phase diagrams do not constitute a direct observation of a planetary layer.

Possible effects on heat transport
Superionic water can also change how heat and composition move through an interior. The ordered oxygen framework and mobile hydrogen may transport charge and mass differently from either molecular ice VII or a fully liquid fluid. Interior models use these properties to test whether a superionic region could help maintain thermal gradients or explain aspects of the planets’ present heat output.
What remains uncertain
No spacecraft or laboratory sample has directly brought material from Uranus or Neptune to Earth for phase identification. The proposed superionic layers are inferences from measured and calculated high-pressure behavior combined with models of planetary pressure, temperature and composition. Real interiors may include ammonia, methane, dissolved salts and other components that shift phase boundaries and transport properties relative to pure water.
Common misconceptions
“Ice VII is superionic ice.”
Ice VII is a specific bcc molecular crystal. It can become the starting material for a superionic transition when heated and compressed, but the terms are not interchangeable.
“Superionic means the whole sample is liquid.”
Only the hydrogen/proton sublattice is liquid-like. Oxygen remains ordered in a crystal lattice until the material reaches a fully molten state.
“Any high conductivity proves superionicity.”
Ice VII can conduct through defects and pressure-dependent ionic processes. A superionic assignment is stronger when conductivity is accompanied by a structural transition or other thermodynamic evidence.
“There is one superionic crystal structure.”
Reported and calculated phases include fcc and P21/c oxygen lattices, with bcc-related superionic fields also mapped. Structure and transport must be specified together.
How to read a claim about superionic water
- Check the pressure and temperature. A statement should identify the loading path and whether the values are static, shocked or calculated.
- Identify the oxygen symmetry. Look for bcc, fcc or P21/c rather than accepting “superionic” as a complete structural description.
- Ask what moved. The defining motion is proton diffusion; oxygen atoms should remain ordered on the measurement timescale.
- Look for more than one diagnostic. Diffraction plus conductivity, density or enthalpy provides a firmer phase assignment than a lone signal.
- Keep the number qualified. Conductivity values and transition pressures depend on temperature, isotope, compression path and method.
Bottom line
Ice VII is a high-pressure molecular crystal with a bcc oxygen lattice and a disordered, localized hydrogen-bond network. Superionic ice is a high-pressure, high-temperature state in which an ordered oxygen lattice coexists with rapidly diffusing protons. The phases differ in hydrogen dynamics, electrical transport, stability conditions and planetary implications. Ice XVIII is one directly observed fcc superionic phase, not a synonym for every superionic form. For Uranus and Neptune, superionic water remains a model-based possibility supported by laboratory and computational phase studies rather than a directly sampled constituent.
