For simple read-only Git distribution, git-daemon serves repositories over the native Git protocol, normally on TCP port 9418. A controlled setup means limiting which repositories are exported, leaving anonymous pushes disabled, and choosing appropriate process, timeout, concurrency, and logging settings—not assuming a performance boost. The Git project describes the daemon as “ideally suited for read-only updates, i.e., pulling from Git repositories.”
When git-daemon is the right fit
The daemon normally provides the upload-pack service, which supports clone, fetch, pull, and ls-remote. That makes it a straightforward option for distributing repositories to clients that need to read them. Git’s manual documents operational controls, but does not provide benchmarks showing that a particular daemon option makes Git faster.
Choose another transport if you need web-server integration or authenticated pushes. Git’s git-http-backend documentation describes smart and backward-compatible dumb HTTP protocols; smart pushing depends on authentication and server configuration. It is an alternative with its own setup requirements, not a cost-free switch.
Decide exactly what the daemon may expose
Use export markers and a repository root
Unless you use --export-all, a repository must contain a git-daemon-export-ok file to be served. Directory arguments also constrain the repositories the daemon searches. For a public or otherwise untrusted service, prefer an explicit repository root and export markers over the broad --export-all setting.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, if /srv/git is the intended repository root, create the marker only in a repository you mean to serve:
touch /srv/git/project.git/git-daemon-export-ok
This assumes project.git is already a valid Git repository and the daemon can read it. Do not create markers indiscriminately: they are part of the exposure boundary.

Use strict paths when exact matching matters
--strict-paths requires directory arguments and permits only exact path matches. Use it when you want to reject aliases or path variations rather than accepting paths that resolve under an allowed directory. Confirm the client-facing repository paths against the actual directory layout before deploying strict matching.
Git documents export rules, directory arguments, and strict-path behavior in its git-daemon manual. Avoid enabling --export-all casually: it bypasses the per-repository export marker requirement.

Keep the service posture read-only
upload-pack is enabled by default; upload-archive is disabled by default; and receive-pack is disabled by default. Keep those defaults unless a specific use case requires otherwise. In particular, do not enable receive-pack for public or untrusted clients: Git warns that it allows anonymous pushes without protocol authentication, including removal of refs, and is intended only for a friendly closed LAN.
Daemon-wide service settings can be overridden per repository unless override is forbidden. Treat the global configuration and any repository-specific configuration as separate layers: check both when auditing which services a repository actually allows.

Run it with operational limits
Restrict the process identity
Where appropriate, run the daemon as a dedicated, restricted user and group with access only to the repositories it needs to serve. Check filesystem permissions after changing identity. Git also warns that it does not reset environment variables such as HOME when it runs Git programs, so do not assume dropping privileges resets the process environment.
Set timeouts and concurrent-client capacity
The options govern different limits: --init-timeout limits the time from connection to the initial request, while --timeout limits client subrequests. --max-connections controls concurrent clients; the documented default is 32. Setting it to zero removes the limit, which is not a universal improvement: choose a limit that matches the capacity and exposure of the host.

Consider an access hook and error disclosure
An access hook can add a policy check before serving a request. Also consider the information returned to clients: informative errors may reveal whether an unexported repository exists. Balance useful diagnostics against the risk of disclosing repository names or existence.
Choose logging intentionally
--verbose adds connection and requested-file details to logs. Selecting a logging destination does not by itself enable verbose logging. Decide what operational detail you need, where it should be retained, and who can access it before turning on verbose output.
Check the installed Git version
Option details should be checked against the Git version installed on the server with git --version. The Git project’s git-daemon manual reports that its page was last changed in Git 2.50.0 on 2025-06-16 and lists no changes through Git 2.56.0.
