Yes—an unofficial native PC port of the Nintendo 64 game Super Smash Bros. is under active development. The project, called BattleShip, targets Windows, Linux and macOS, with Android described as planned or in progress. It is not an official Nintendo release, and it does not distribute Nintendo’s game files. Instead, you provide a legally owned, matching ROM and the build process extracts the required assets locally.
The “isn’t AI slop” distinction is about provenance. BattleShip began with the VetriTheRetri/ssb-decomp-re decompilation and uses established native libraries and community contributions. Its project page says, “As of now, this is no longer a pure AI project.”
What BattleShip actually is
BattleShip is an open-source fan port of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64. The README identifies support for both the US NTSC-U version 1.0 and the Japanese release, Nintendo All-Star! Dairantou Smash Brothers. Rather than emulating the N64 hardware, the project adapts the game to run as a native desktop application.

An emulator reproduces a console environment and runs an original ROM inside it. A native port compiles game code for a modern operating system, then replaces console-specific rendering, audio and input layers with PC-compatible systems.

Why the project is described as not being AI-generated slop
The project’s history is more substantial than a repository assembled entirely by an automated code generator. BattleShip is built on the VetriTheRetri/ssb-decomp-re project, a matching decompilation whose goal is byte-for-byte agreement with a user-supplied original ROM. The decompilation repository does not include Nintendo’s baserom, so contributors must provide their own legally obtained copy for reproduction and verification.
BattleShip also relies on libultraship for native rendering, audio and input, and on Torch to extract assets from the ROM during the build. Its documentation describes community work such as playtesting, bug fixes, modding knowledge and feature suggestions. AI-assisted development may have been part of the project’s earlier history, but the maintainers explicitly state that it is no longer a purely AI project. That statement does not mean every line was written manually; it means the current project has human technical involvement and a broader development process.

How the native port works
- Start with a supported release. BattleShip supports the US NTSC-U v1.0 dump, identified internally as NALE, and the Japanese v1.0 dump, identified as NALJ.
- Verify the ROM. The project documentation publishes SHA-1 and MD5 hashes for the accepted dumps. A file that does not match the required release will not build or run correctly.
- Supply the ROM yourself. Nintendo code, textures, audio, models, text, ROM data and other copyrighted assets are not included in the repository.
- Build the project. Torch extracts the needed assets at build time, while libultraship provides the PC-native graphics, sound and controller layers.
- Run the resulting application. The documented desktop targets are Windows, Linux and macOS. Android support is described as planned or in progress rather than as a finished release.
This design keeps the repository distributable without bundling Nintendo’s copyrighted game data, while allowing a person who owns the correct ROM to reproduce a working build.

What this means for Windows, Linux and Steam Deck users
Windows
Windows is one of the project’s explicitly documented native targets. You still need the matching NALE or NALJ ROM and must follow the project’s build instructions; downloading a random ROM will not satisfy the version check.

Linux
Linux is also listed as a supported desktop platform. The available documentation does not establish a packaged distribution, universal installer or specific distribution requirements, so expect a source-build workflow unless the project provides a release artifact for your system.
Steam Deck
The project materials name Linux but do not promise a Steam Deck build or officially tested Deck compatibility. Because SteamOS is Linux-based, a successful Linux build may be a starting point, but controller mapping, dependencies and graphics behavior would still need to be verified for the individual Deck setup.

Legal and practical limits
BattleShip is unofficial. Nothing in the project description indicates a Nintendo-authorized PC release, and the repository intentionally omits Nintendo’s copyrighted code and assets. The legally safer workflow is to dump a ROM from a copy you own, verify its hash against the supported release, and use that file only as required by the project’s build process.
Do not assume that a ROM with the right game title is sufficient. Regional revisions, later revisions and altered dumps can have different hashes and may fail even when they appear to be the same game. If the build reports an invalid or unsupported ROM, check the region, version number and checksum before troubleshooting the compiler or graphics settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own Super Smash Bros. 64 ROM?
Yes. BattleShip does not distribute Nintendo’s ROM or other copyrighted assets. You need a legally owned dump matching one of the documented releases and its published checksums.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy might my ROM fail even though it is the right game?
The port accepts specific revisions: US NTSC-U v1.0 (NALE) or Japanese v1.0 (NALJ). A different region, revision or modified dump will have different SHA-1 or MD5 values and is unsupported.
Can I download a ready-made Windows version?
The project documentation establishes a Windows target, but the supplied materials do not establish a particular installer or packaged release. Follow the project’s current distribution and build instructions.
