An unofficial native Windows port of Super Mario Galaxy became publicly available as a downloadable beta on October 14, 2026. The work-in-progress supports Windows 10 and newer, needs at least 8 GB of RAM, and includes no Nintendo code or game assets. You must supply your own legally obtained copy of the Wii game.
What was released
TechSpot reports that creator keepvaibin released the beta independently of Nintendo. The project was built with Anthropic’s Claude, while the creator reviewed and tested the generated output personally. It is a native Windows executable rather than an emulator configuration, but it is not an official Nintendo product and there is no documented Nintendo authorization or endorsement.
The beta is best understood as an early compatibility project, not a finished replacement for an official PC edition. The report identifies several known problems, including frame-rate drops in Gateway Galaxy on slower processors, audio skipping when the CPU is under heavy background load, and lighting or bloom differences in the Comet Observatory.
PC requirements and reported performance
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or newer |
| Memory | At least 8 GB of RAM |
| Reported test hardware | Intel Core Ultra 9 185H integrated graphics with 16 GB of RAM |
| Reported result | 60 frames per second at 1440p on that test system |
The 60-fps figure is a result reported by the project’s coverage, not an independent benchmark. Your experience can vary substantially with processor speed, integrated-versus-discrete graphics, drivers and background applications. Gateway Galaxy is specifically reported to dip below 60 fps on slower CPUs. Heavy CPU activity can also make the soundtrack skip, so closing browsers, launchers and other demanding programs may help, although it cannot remove the beta’s underlying limitations.

- A free update will be available for the Nintendo Switch 2! Enjoy the game at 4K resolution in TV mode or 1080p in Handheld and Tabletop mode.* *4K resolution and 120 fps are available in supported games and require a compatible display. Frame rates capped at 60 fps for 4K output.
Features and controls
The port includes options normally associated with a modern PC release:
- Aspect-ratio support from classic 4:3 displays through ultrawide 32:9 layouts.
- Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1 upscaling.
- Per-pixel lighting.
- Mouse-and-keyboard input.
- Support for Xbox, Switch Pro and Switch 2 Pro controllers.
These controls remove the need for a Wii Remote in the native port. That is a significant difference from traditional emulation, where pointer and motion input are often central to the original game’s design.
What “no Nintendo code or assets” means
The project is described as containing no Nintendo code or bundled game assets. Instead, the player must provide an own copy of Super Mario Galaxy. Do not treat a downloadable ROM, ISO or repackaged game archive as part of the port; the project’s stated model is that users supply their own game data.

- Savings based on manufacturer’s suggested retail price when purchasing games separately. Actual savings may vary.
Nintendo has not been documented as approving, sponsoring or endorsing this release. Because the beta is unofficial and still changing, availability, compatibility and distribution terms may change without notice. Keep a backup of your legally created game data and read the project’s current instructions before attempting setup.
Native port versus Dolphin emulation
There is no official PC version of Super Mario Galaxy. For users who want an established way to play a user-owned Wii copy, pcgaming.io’s October 2026 guide recommends the Dolphin emulator and rates compatibility as “Playable” (4/5).
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Unofficial native Windows beta | Windows executable; 4:3 to 32:9 displays; FSR 1, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering; mouse, keyboard and modern gamepads | Work in progress with reported Gateway Galaxy slowdowns, CPU-related audio skips and visual differences in Comet Observatory |
| Dolphin emulator | Established emulation route for a user-dumped Wii copy; can use a real Wii Remote or map the pointer to a mouse | Requires emulator setup and Wii-style input configuration rather than the native port’s contemporary control scheme |
Choose the native beta if widescreen output, modern controller support and a Windows executable matter most and you accept unfinished behavior. Choose Dolphin if maturity and Wii Remote support are more important than native-PC presentation. Both approaches require your own game copy.

- -Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- -This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
How to approach the beta safely
- Confirm your system. Use Windows 10 or a later release and at least 8 GB of RAM. A faster processor is advisable because the reported slowdowns are CPU-sensitive.
- Obtain your game data from your own copy. The port does not provide Nintendo assets. Do not download an unauthorized ROM or ISO.
- Install only the files supplied by the project’s legitimate distribution channel. Avoid mirrors that bundle executables with unknown modifications.
- Configure input. Start with a supported Xbox, Switch Pro or Switch 2 Pro controller, or use mouse and keyboard if that better fits your setup.
- Set resolution and scaling. Select the display aspect ratio, then adjust anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and FSR 1 according to your graphics hardware.
- Test demanding areas. Check Gateway Galaxy and the Comet Observatory separately. A stable frame rate elsewhere does not guarantee identical behavior in those locations.
- Reduce background load when audio breaks up. Close CPU-intensive applications and retest. If skipping persists, report it as a beta issue rather than assuming the game data is damaged.
Where related projects fit
The SMGCommunity Petari repository describes itself as a Super Mario Galaxy decompilation and explicitly says it is not intended to become a PC-port project; it points readers toward separate efforts such as AstroCore. MacioGalaxy is another independent project: a native Apple-Silicon macOS port built from Petari. Its repository states that it includes no game data, requires a disc dump from the user’s own copy and is not affiliated with Nintendo. These projects should not be conflated with the new Windows beta.

Super Mario Galaxy debuted on Wii in 2007 and has sold 12.8 million copies over its lifetime, according to a Nintendo sales figure reported by TechSpot in 2026. The new beta shows how decompilation and code-generation tools can produce a modern-platform build for a prominent console game without distributing the original publisher’s files. It also illustrates the boundary: a technically impressive port can still be unofficial, incomplete and dependent on users supplying their own legally obtained data.
