For most players, start with Super Mario Odyssey. Its globe-spanning sandbox, hidden Power Moons and Cappy’s ability to capture enemies, animals and objects make it the more flexible introduction if you enjoy exploring and experimenting. Start with Super Mario Galaxy instead if your priority is a more clearly directed cosmic adventure built around gravity-defying platforming and recovering Power Stars.
There is no objectively correct order. Nintendo’s descriptions present two different kinds of Mario adventure, so the best first game is the one whose central idea sounds more appealing. Neither description establishes a required sequence, and the recommendation here is a fit-based editorial judgment rather than a claim about review scores or player consensus.
The fundamental difference between the two games
Both games are 3D Mario adventures, but they organize your attention differently. Super Mario Odyssey sends Mario around a series of places far from the Mushroom Kingdom. Its defining tool is Cappy, which supports cap throws and cap jumps and lets Mario capture and control objects, animals and enemies. The main collectible is the Power Moon.
Super Mario Galaxy frames Mario’s journey as a cosmic rescue mission. Nintendo describes an adventure across the universe in which Mario must rescue Princess Peach and recover Power Stars stolen by Bowser. Gravity and movement between planetoids are the game’s signature ideas. The contrast is therefore not simply “newer versus older”; it is sandbox experimentation versus a spacefaring, gravity-centered sequence of challenges.

Those categories are more useful than asking which game is universally “better.” Decide whether you want your first hours to be driven by a versatile possession mechanic and open-ended searching, or by gravity, planets and a Power Star objective.
Choose Super Mario Odyssey first if exploration is your priority
You want a globe-trotting sandbox
Nintendo describes Odyssey as a “massive, globe-trotting 3D adventure.” That premise makes place-to-place discovery the game’s organizing principle. If you enjoy arriving somewhere unfamiliar, examining the environment and looking for rewards that are not on the most obvious route, Odyssey is the natural first choice.
Power Moons are the central collectible, so your progress is tied to finding them in the world rather than only following a single visible path. The description does not assign a universal difficulty or completion time, so do not treat this structure as a promise that every player will experience the same amount of content. The reliable distinction is that exploration and collection are central to the design.

Cappy is more than a projectile. Nintendo specifically lists cap throws, cap jumps and captures that let Mario control objects, animals and enemies. That means the same button press can serve movement, interaction or temporary control depending on what is in front of you. Players who enjoy testing a mechanic against whatever they find in a level will get the clearest reason to begin here.
Capturing is also a useful test for your preferred learning style. You may enjoy discovering what Cappy can do by experimentation, or you may prefer a game that presents one movement challenge at a time. The former points toward Odyssey; the latter may point toward Galaxy.

You want a straightforward local multiplayer option
Nintendo lists Odyssey for TV, tabletop and handheld play, with one or two players on one system. If your first session may involve handing a controller to another person, that published mode list is a concrete reason to choose Odyssey. The listing does not establish that every activity is equally suited to two players, so treat “one or two players” as the supported play-mode information rather than a guarantee about every moment of the adventure.
Choose Super Mario Galaxy first if platforming and gravity are the draw
You want a cosmic premise with a clear objective
Galaxy begins from a focused premise: rescue Princess Peach and recover Power Stars taken by Bowser. Nintendo describes the route as a gravity-defying adventure across the universe. If that sentence sounds more exciting than touring a collection of locations and searching for Power Moons, begin with Galaxy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Power Stars give the game a distinct progression vocabulary. You are not choosing between two names for the same collectible; the collectible belongs to a different structure and a different fantasy. Stars support the feeling of moving through a cosmic mission, while Moons belong to Odyssey’s globe-trotting search.
You want gravity to be the main event
Gravity-focused platforming changes what “movement” means. Instead of treating every surface as a conventional floor, the game’s premise asks you to think about planets, arcs and shifts in orientation. That is the reason to pick Galaxy first, not an assumption that it is automatically easier, harder or more technically impressive. The available official information does not provide a comparative difficulty scale.
Players who prefer a sequence of purposeful platforming challenges may find this structure easier to understand than a sandbox full of possible discoveries. Conversely, if you dislike being directed toward a particular objective and would rather wander for optional finds, Odyssey is likely the better fit.

You are buying the current physical Galaxy release
The physical Switch release cited by Nintendo is Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, released October 2, 2025. It is a two-game package, not a standalone Galaxy cartridge. Nintendo also lists the games as available individually as digital titles. This matters when you are choosing an entry point: a physical purchase may include both games, while a digital purchase can be made per title according to the current regional store listing.
How the first-game choice changes your expectations
If you start with Odyssey
Your first reference point will be a world organized around places, Cappy’s uses and Power Moons. You will learn to treat the environment as a collection of possible interactions: movement with a cap jump, a cap throw, or a capture can all be part of the solution. When you later play Galaxy, its cosmic sequence and gravity-centered movement may feel more focused because the organizing idea is different.
Do not use Odyssey’s sandbox as a standard that Galaxy must match. A planet-to-planet challenge is pursuing a different kind of satisfaction from searching a globe-spanning location for another Moon. Comparing them only by the number of collectibles or the apparent size of a world misses the design decision each game makes.
If you start with Galaxy
Your first reference point will be a rescue mission built around Power Stars and gravity-defying traversal. When you move to Odyssey, the major adjustment is not a new story order but a new relationship with the environment: Cappy can turn objects, animals and enemies into temporary tools, and Power Moons reward searching across locations.
Starting with Galaxy can therefore suit players who want to understand a concentrated platforming idea before tackling a broader collection structure. It can also make Odyssey feel deliberately expansive rather than confusing, provided you are comfortable setting your own search priorities.

Switch and Switch 2 editions: what to verify
Super Mario Odyssey
Nintendo lists Super Mario Odyssey as a Nintendo Switch game with a physical edition and an original release date of October 27, 2017. It is listed as supported on Switch 2. Nintendo’s Switch 2 update listing gives June 5, 2025, as the update date and describes improved display support, HDR and GameShare compatibility.
Those features can depend on the console, display and region. Check the current Nintendo product and support page for your territory before assuming that an update, HDR behavior or GameShare function applies to your exact setup.
Super Mario Galaxy
The cited physical product is Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, released October 2, 2025. Nintendo says the games are also available individually as digital titles. The Switch 2 listing describes updated visuals and features, including improved display support and Joy-Con 2 mouse mode.
Nintendo describes output of up to 4K for Galaxy in supported circumstances. A compatible display is required, and Nintendo’s announcement notes 60 frames per second for 4K output. “Up to 4K” is not a promise that every television, dock, cable or mode will produce that output; verify the current hardware requirements and regional support information.
What the platform information does not tell you
Compatibility listings establish supported systems and manufacturer-documented features. They do not establish which game you will enjoy more, how long either game will take you, a comparative difficulty ranking, current retail price or present stock. Those variables can change by region and date, so keep the purchase decision anchored to the play style rather than an assumed universal value.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A practical way to decide in five minutes
- Choose your preferred verb. If you want to capture, throw and experiment with objects, animals and enemies, select Odyssey. If you want to defy gravity and traverse planets, select Galaxy.
- Choose your preferred collectible. Power Moons indicate the globe-trotting search of Odyssey; Power Stars indicate Galaxy’s cosmic objective.
- Choose your preferred structure. Select Odyssey for a sandbox-like exploration pattern or Galaxy for a cosmic sequence of platforming challenges.
- Check the edition before paying. Confirm whether you are buying the standalone physical Odyssey release, a digital title, or the physical Galaxy and Galaxy 2 bundle. Do not assume the Galaxy physical product contains only the first game.
- Check your hardware and region. For Switch 2 features, verify the current Nintendo listing, your display requirements and whether the listed update and sharing features are available where you live.
Common mistakes when comparing them
Treating release age as the deciding factor
Odyssey has a listed original release date of October 27, 2017, while the cited physical Galaxy bundle released October 2, 2025. Those dates describe editions and availability; they do not measure which game is the better first experience. Choose by the mechanic and structure you want to learn first.
Assuming the physical Galaxy product is standalone
The named physical release is Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. If you want only the first game, investigate the individual digital listing or the current regional options instead of assuming the box contains one title.
Expecting a universal answer from other players
No comparative preference, sales, playtime, review-score or player-survey statistic is established here. A confident “everyone should start with…” claim would go beyond the available evidence. The defensible answer is conditional: Odyssey for exploration and capture experimentation; Galaxy for cosmic gravity-focused platforming.
Recommended Free Tools
Confusing a feature listing with a guarantee for every setup
Switch 2 display improvements, HDR, GameShare, Joy-Con 2 mouse mode and 4K output are manufacturer-listed features with hardware and regional conditions. Read the current support page for your console and display before making a purchase based on one of those features.
Bottom line: which one should you play first?
Start with Super Mario Odyssey if you want the broadest invitation to explore: travel through far-flung locations, search for Power Moons and use Cappy to capture enemies, animals and objects. Start with Super Mario Galaxy if the words “cosmic,” “gravity-defying” and “Power Stars” describe the adventure you want more precisely.
For an undecided player, Odyssey is the safest recommendation because its capture mechanic and globe-trotting structure provide several ways to engage with each location. That is a fit judgment, not a universal ranking. Either order is valid, and the games’ different premises mean that playing one first does not invalidate the other.
