Yes, you can play the Wii version of Super Mario Galaxy on many Android devices through the Dolphin emulator. Dolphin’s compatibility list labels Galaxy “Playable,” but that is a broad result rather than a guarantee of full speed on every phone. Nintendo’s reviewed product listings identify the original Wii game and a current Nintendo Switch release; they do not identify an official Android edition.
The practical questions are therefore about emulation: whether your phone can run Dolphin well, how to reproduce the Wii Remote’s shake and pointer controls, how to protect saves when Dolphin changes, and which updates apply to the Android setup versus Nintendo’s Switch software.

Is there an official Android version of Super Mario Galaxy?
No official Android release is identified in Nintendo’s product listings for Super Mario Galaxy. On Android, the usual route is the Dolphin emulator running the Wii version. That is fundamentally different from downloading a Nintendo-made Android app: Dolphin supplies the emulator, while the game remains the Wii software with its original control design.

It says, “Mario’s newest move – the spin move – is performed by giving the Wii Remote a quick shake.” The same description explains that the Wii Remote pointer is used to collect Star Bits and throw them at enemies. An Android setup can approximate those actions, but the quality of the experience depends heavily on your input hardware and the phone’s performance.

Does Super Mario Galaxy work in Dolphin on Android?
Dolphin’s compatibility-list result marks Super Mario Galaxy as Playable. In Dolphin terminology, that is a useful starting signal: the game can generally be completed with the emulator under suitable conditions. It is not a device-specific benchmark, a promise of perfect frame pacing, or a guarantee that every Android GPU and driver combination will behave identically.
Why “Playable” does not mean identical performance
- Android phones use a wide range of processors, GPUs, thermal designs and graphics drivers.
- A phone may run at full speed while cool, then slow down after sustained play because of heat management.
- Graphics backends and emulator settings can change performance substantially on the same device.
- Development builds of Dolphin change frequently and are less tested than stable releases, so an update can improve one device while introducing a regression on another.
For the best first test, use a current stable Android build, add the game to Dolphin’s library, and play a representative level for several minutes. Check sustained frame pacing rather than judging the result from a short menu session. If performance is inconsistent, try a different graphics backend or conservative enhancements before assuming the phone is incapable.
How to set up Dolphin on an Android phone
Dolphin’s download service provides Android packages and separates stable releases from development versions. Stable releases are made every few months. Development builds can appear several times per day and are less tested. That cadence matters when you are deciding whether to update.
- Choose a release channel. Start with the newest stable Android build when one is available. Use a development build only when you have a specific fix or compatibility improvement to try, and keep the previous installer or build information so you can revert if necessary.
- Install Dolphin and grant the storage permission it requests. Android’s permission wording varies by version. Allow access to the folder where you keep your Wii game files, then select that folder from Dolphin’s game-library screen.
- Add the game to the library. Dolphin scans the selected folder and displays recognized titles. If Galaxy does not appear, confirm that the file is in a format Dolphin supports and that Android has granted access to the containing folder; moving the file to a newly selected folder can resolve a stale library scan.
- Configure controls before starting a level. Select the Wii Remote emulation settings and map buttons, pointer movement and motion actions. Test the spin action and Star Bit pointer in a playable area, not only at the title screen.
- Select a graphics backend and test at default enhancements. Begin with conservative internal resolution and effects. Once the game is stable, increase visual settings one at a time so you can identify which option causes stutter or overheating.
- Play long enough to check heat and battery behavior. A setup that looks smooth for five minutes may throttle later. If speed drops as the phone warms, lower enhancements, remove a case that traps heat, close background workloads and retest.
Dolphin settings names and locations can change between stable and development builds. When a guide written for an older build does not match your screen, use the current Android build’s Wii Remote, graphics and game-library sections rather than forcing an outdated path.
What controller do you need for Galaxy on Android?
A Bluetooth controller with both a gyroscope or other motion sensor and an analog pointer method is the closest practical substitute for the original Wii Remote and Nunchuk arrangement. Galaxy’s shake-to-spin move is a core mechanic, and the pointer is used repeatedly for Star Bits and enemy interactions. A standard button-only pad can launch the game, but it may require awkward remapping for motion and pointing.
| Input method | What it handles well | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen controls | Basic buttons and an on-screen approximation of pointer movement | Shake and pointer actions are less natural; hands can obscure the play area |
| Button-only Bluetooth controller | Comfortable movement, camera and ordinary button presses | Motion actions need a mapping workaround and may feel uncomfortable during extended play |
| Bluetooth controller with gyro or motion sensing | Spin gestures and other motion inputs, with physical controls for movement | Pointer behavior still depends on how Dolphin maps the controller’s sensor or stick input |
Configuring motion and pointer actions
In Dolphin’s Wii Remote emulation screen, assign a physical control to the shake or motion input used for the spin. Use a short, repeatable gesture rather than a large movement that can shift your grip. For pointer functions, choose the mapping that lets you reach the full screen without lifting your hands repeatedly. A gyro-capable controller is usually the most natural starting point, but you should calibrate it while the phone is held in the position you use for play.

If you use touch controls, place the virtual pointer where your thumb can reach it without covering Mario. Make the spin action a large, clearly labeled on-screen control and test it during a safe moment in a level. Button-only layouts can work for players who accept remapping, but they do not reproduce the Wii Remote’s original physical feel.

Will your save survive a Dolphin update?
Your durable record should be the game’s normal in-game save data, not a single emulator save state. In-game saves are tied to the Wii software’s own save system. Save states are snapshots of the emulator, game memory and configuration at a particular moment; they are convenient for retries but more exposed to changes between Dolphin versions, graphics settings or device migrations.
A safer save routine
- Save through Galaxy’s normal in-game menu whenever you finish a session or reach a meaningful checkpoint.
- Exit the game cleanly so Dolphin has time to write the save data.
- Before changing Dolphin channels, phones or major settings, copy the game’s in-game save data to separate storage using the file-management or save-management tools available on your Android setup.
- Keep more than one backup generation. A recent copy protects progress; an older copy can help if a file becomes corrupted.
- After installing a new Dolphin build, launch the game and verify that the in-game save appears before relying on new save states.
Do not delete the older Dolphin build or its user-data folder until the new build has been tested. If a savestate fails after an update, return to the in-game save rather than repeatedly loading the incompatible state. Savestates are best treated as disposable convenience files, while the in-game save is the copy to preserve.
Which updates apply to Android Dolphin and which apply to Switch?
Dolphin updates and Nintendo’s console updates are separate systems. Installing a new Dolphin Android build does not update the Wii game image, and Nintendo’s Switch patch notes do not change the software being emulated on your phone.
| Platform or software | Update information | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Dolphin on Android | Stable releases arrive every few months; development builds may be published several times per day and are less tested | Choose a stable build for predictability, and back up in-game saves before changing builds |
| Super Mario Galaxy for Nintendo Switch | Version 1.3.1, released February 5, 2026, is the latest version listed by Nintendo Support | This is a Switch software update, not an Android or Wii-image update |
| Switch 2 compatibility | Nintendo says the software must be at version 1.2.0 or later to play on Nintendo Switch 2 | The requirement applies to Nintendo hardware and its software version |
Nintendo Support also states that save data remains available after downloading the Switch update. That assurance concerns the Switch release. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee for Dolphin savestates or for files moved between Android builds.
What is the official alternative to Android emulation?
Nintendo’s current Switch listing is the supported route for readers who want official hardware, a maintained software package and Nintendo’s update path. The listing describes Switch 2 compatibility as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” It advertises enhanced 1080p resolution on Switch and 4K on Switch 2, an improved user interface, extra Storybook Chapters and a new Assist Mode.

- Enhance your adventure even further with a free update to take advantage of the processing power of Nintendo Switch 2!
The store listing gives the release date as October 2, 2025, a file size of 3.6 GB and Save Data Cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online. Those specifications belong to the Switch and Switch 2 edition, not the Wii version running in Dolphin. The official edition also avoids Android’s device-by-device variation: you use Nintendo’s supported console target rather than tuning an emulator for a particular phone GPU.

Troubleshooting common Android problems
The game does not appear in Dolphin
Recheck the folder selected for Dolphin’s library and Android’s storage permission. If the file was moved or renamed, remove the old library location and select the current folder again. A rescan after granting access is often necessary.
The game runs slowly or stutters
Return graphics enhancements to conservative values, then test another available graphics backend. Close background apps, keep the phone cool and test for several minutes. If the slowdown appears only after the device heats up, thermal throttling is a more likely cause than a save-file problem.
Spin does not trigger reliably
Open the Wii Remote mapping and confirm that the motion or shake input is assigned to a control you can activate consistently. Recalibrate a gyro controller, reduce accidental dead-zone settings only if needed, and test in a safe area before entering a demanding level.
Star Bits or pointer actions are difficult
Adjust the pointer mapping so the entire play area is reachable without covering the screen. A gyro-capable controller can provide a steadier pointing method than a small touch overlay. If you use a button-only pad, assign pointer movement to an analog stick and expect a less natural feel.
A savestate fails after an update
Close the state, start the game normally and load the most recent in-game save. If that works, keep using the in-game save while you evaluate the new Dolphin build. Restore the previous build only after preserving the current save data and confirming which files belong to each installation.
Bottom line for Android players
Galaxy is generally viable on Android through Dolphin, whose compatibility list labels it Playable, but the result depends on the phone and settings. Because shake and pointer actions are central to the game, a motion-capable Bluetooth controller is the most useful accessory; touchscreen and button-only mappings are compromises. Keep in-game saves as your dependable backup, treat savestates cautiously when Dolphin changes, and remember that Nintendo’s February 5, 2026 version 1.3.1 update applies to the Switch edition, not the Wii software emulated on Android.
