Choose the execution boundary before choosing a trigger: send signed-in user actions from React to an authenticated Supabase Edge Function, use a server-side schedule for recurring backend work, and reserve Capacitor background execution for short tasks that genuinely need the device. Edge Functions handle bounded requests; they are not always-on workers.

Which Supabase automation pattern fits your workflow?

Start with who initiates the work, where it must run, and how reliably it must finish. The app, a third-party provider, and a backend schedule have different trust models. Work that is long-running or must survive failures needs more than a request handler or a mobile background callback.

Workflow Recommended pattern How it establishes trust
A signed-in user starts an action React/Capacitor client invokes an Edge Function User session JWT, with data access protected by Row Level Security
Work should recur on a backend schedule Postgres pg_cron uses pg_net to call an Edge Function Server-controlled credential stored in Supabase Vault
A third-party service sends an event Webhook endpoint validates the provider’s signature Provider signature or another explicit authentication mechanism
Brief work must run on the device while backgrounded Capacitor Background Runner Native platform event; operating-system scheduling is not guaranteed
Work is heavy, long-running, or must reliably complete Use background-worker infrastructure suited to the application’s requirements Design durable processing, failure handling, and retries for the workload

The last option is a boundary rather than a specific product recommendation: the appropriate worker or queue depends on requirements such as duration, retry behavior, and throughput.

How should a React or Capacitor app call an Edge Function?

For an action initiated by a signed-in user, invoke the function through the Supabase client library. Its function invocation sends the user’s session JWT in the Authorization header. Supabase’s current guidance also documents @supabase/server and its withSupabase wrapper for function handlers. See Supabase’s function-security guide.

A project publishable key can be included in browser and mobile app code; shipped client code is visible by design. It is not a substitute for authorization. Protect user data using the authenticated user’s identity and database Row Level Security policies. Keep secret or service-role keys out of the app: Supabase says secret keys bypass RLS and must remain under server-side control. The user JWT is sent as Authorization; the project key is sent as apikey. These headers serve different purposes. See Supabase’s API-key documentation.

How do you schedule a Supabase Edge Function?

For recurring backend work, Supabase documents combining Postgres pg_cron with pg_net to make an HTTP request to an Edge Function. This is a server-triggered schedule, not a timer inside the React app, so it is the documented fit when the app may be closed but backend work should be initiated on a recurring schedule.

  1. Decide the recurrence and confirm it suits the project’s configuration and workload.
  2. Configure a function-call credential for the scheduled request and store it in Supabase Vault, as Supabase recommends.
  3. Set the function’s accepted authentication mode to match the caller. Keep the credential on the server; do not embed it in the app bundle.
  4. Use the documented pg_cron and pg_net pattern to issue the HTTP call, then build suitable failure handling for the job.

Supabase’s examples show the integration, not a guarantee that every task is appropriate for an Edge Function or that every project has identical scheduling configuration. See the scheduling guide.

How should an Edge Function handle a third-party webhook?

A webhook provider generally cannot send a Supabase user-session JWT. Supabase advises disabling the gateway’s verify_jwt check for the specific webhook function and validating the provider’s signature in the handler. Disabling that check lets requests reach the handler without a Supabase JWT; it does not authenticate the sender. Reject requests whose signature or other configured authentication does not validate. Apply this setting per function, not indiscriminately across the API. See Supabase’s function-security guidance.

Can an Edge Function keep running after it responds?

For work that can continue briefly after the response, Supabase documents EdgeRuntime.waitUntil(promise). Its examples include asynchronous operations such as storage uploads, database updates, and logging. Catch and handle failures inside the background operation; returning the HTTP response does not make the work durable.

Edge Functions remain subject to wall-clock, CPU, and memory limits. Supabase’s general guidance is: “Heavy long-running jobs should be moved to background workers.” For important work, plan for failure and use a retry or durable-worker mechanism appropriate to the application instead of assuming waitUntil guarantees completion. The documentation does not select a particular queue or worker product for this app. See the background-tasks guide and the Edge Functions guide.

Can a Capacitor app run tasks in the background?

Capacitor Background Runner provides a headless JavaScript environment for native background events, but the operating system controls when execution occurs. Runner state is destroyed between invocations, and the feature should not be treated as an always-on service or a precise timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited Capacitor next documentation describes iOS execution as approximately up to 30 seconds per invocation, with timing determined by iOS. It says Android may allow longer in some cases, recommends keeping work to 30 seconds for cross-platform behavior, and describes a minimum 15-minute interval for repeating work. Those are plugin documentation limits, not promises that the task will run at an exact time. Because these details come from the next documentation, check them against the stable plugin version installed in your project. Use native background execution only when the device itself needs to do the work; recurring business automation belongs on a backend schedule. See Capacitor’s Background Runner documentation.

What security and deployment details should you check?

  • Separate credentials by purpose. A user’s JWT belongs in Authorization; the project key belongs in apikey. Do not ship a secret or service-role key, which bypasses RLS. See the API-key guide.
  • Keep function secrets out of source control. Use Supabase secret configuration for local and production environments, and keep local secret files untracked. See the secrets guide.
  • Validate webhook callers in the handler. If gateway JWT verification is disabled for a webhook, verify the provider signature or another explicit authentication mechanism. See the function-security guide.
  • Keep scheduled credentials server-side. Use Vault for credentials used by cron-triggered calls, as recommended in the scheduling guide.
  • Keep function work bounded. Move heavy, long-running tasks to worker infrastructure rather than relying on an Edge Function request or background continuation. See the Edge Functions guide.
  • Include native project files in your workflow. Capacitor’s React instructions explain that compiled web assets are copied into native projects and recommend committing the native platform folders to source control. See Capacitor’s React guide.

A practical decision checklist

  • If a signed-in user taps a button, invoke a function with the user’s session and enforce authorization through identity and RLS.
  • If the task recurs while the app may be closed, schedule it on the backend with pg_cron and pg_net.
  • If an external provider initiates the request, authenticate that provider explicitly, commonly by validating its signature.
  • If the task must run briefly on the user’s device, use native background facilities while allowing for operating-system limits and timing variance.
  • If completion must be durable, retries matter, or execution is long-running, choose a worker design based on the actual workload rather than stretching an Edge Function beyond its bounded role.
