In Summoner’s Greed, “damage,” “stun,” and “support” are best understood as battlefield jobs rather than rigid classes. Damage monsters remove enemies, crowd-control monsters interrupt their movement and abilities, and support monsters increase allies’ output or hinder enemies. Many monsters combine jobs, and the best choice depends on attack coverage, placement, and elemental matchup—not on a permanent tier label.
This guide explains how each role works, how to compare monsters without assuming a current meta ranking, and how to assemble a team that uses damage, control, and buffs together.
What “monster roles” mean in Summoner’s Greed
The game does not require every monster to fit one exclusive category. A monster’s role describes the effect that matters most in a particular formation. A direct attacker may also stun, while a totem may contribute no damage but dramatically improve the attackers next to it. The same monster can therefore change value when you move it, change the enemies you face, or alter the surrounding team.
Use three questions to identify a monster’s practical role:

- What is its primary contribution? Does it deal damage, stop enemies, or improve allies?
- How much of the battlefield does it affect? Check whether its attack is single-target, area-of-effect, lane-based, or global.
- What conditions does it need? Buffs may require adjacent allies, control may depend on an ability actually applying a status, and elemental damage may be stronger or weaker against the current wave.
These are mechanics categories, not a universal ranking. Community-wiki descriptions are useful for identifying what an ability does, but they do not establish a current “best” monster list, damage-per-second comparison, or late-game guarantee.
Damage monsters: the direct clearing role
What counts as damage
Damage monsters contribute by attacking enemies with normal attacks and special attacks. Their value comes from how quickly and reliably they remove threats before those threats reach the king. A monster with modest single-target damage can be more useful against a dangerous boss than one whose attacks are wide but weak; an area attacker can be better when many enemies arrive together.
When comparing two damage candidates, inspect the attack itself rather than the monster’s name or element. Record whether it hits one target or several, how far it reaches, whether a special attack changes its coverage, and whether the attack carries a status effect. The available mechanics references support elemental interactions but do not provide a comprehensive, current damage ranking.

Damage comparison checklist
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Single-target, area, or global coverage? | Coverage determines whether the monster excels against one priority enemy, clustered waves, or enemies across the whole field. |
| Normal attack or special attack? | A special may provide the important burst or control effect, while the normal attack supplies most routine clearing. |
| Does the attack apply a status? | Electric, type-less, and ice attacks can sometimes stun or freeze, but the element alone does not prove that the individual attack applies control. |
| Does the element fit the wave? | An otherwise strong attacker can lose value when its element is disadvantaged against the enemies it must hit. |
| Can adjacent buffs reach it? | Attack-damage and attack-speed totems only help monsters inside their stated area, so placement can change effective output. |
Do not infer relative DPS from a single ability description. Without controlled measurements under the same upgrade level and wave conditions, “higher damage” is an unsupported conclusion.

Stuns, freezes, and slows: control as a tempo tool
Stun
A stunned enemy cannot move, attack, or use special powers. That pause is valuable even when the stun monster does little direct damage: your attackers receive more time to fire, and a dangerous enemy is prevented from advancing or activating an ability. Electric or type-less attacks can cause stun, but not every attack of those types does. Always check the individual monster’s ability description.
Freeze
Freeze has the same immediate battlefield consequences described for stun: the affected enemy cannot move, attack, or use special powers while the effect lasts. Ice attacks can apply freeze, but an ice element by itself is not proof that every attack freezes. Stun and freeze are treated as distinct for immunity purposes, so an enemy resistant to one status is not automatically described as resistant to the other.
Slow and control-oriented support
Slow does not create the same complete stop as stun or freeze, but it reduces the rate at which enemies progress. Sluggy is a useful example of a totem whose contribution is slowing enemies rather than attacking them. This is support through enemy control: the team gains time because opponents take longer to reach the objective.

Why control cannot lock a wave forever
The mechanics references describe a shared control cooldown that prevents permanent stalling. Even if a team has both stun and freeze sources, the game’s control timing limits how continuously enemies can be held. Control should therefore be treated as extra time for damage, not as a substitute for damage in every situation. It is also possible for an attack to have an element associated with control without actually applying that status, so verify the ability rather than assuming a chain of uninterrupted disables.

Support monsters: multiplying allied value
Damage and attack-speed buffs
Support monsters improve the rest of the formation. Mighty and Speedy are nonattacking totems commonly used for this purpose:
- Mighty increases the attack damage of adjacent monsters.
- Speedy increases the attack speed of adjacent monsters.
The buff is the monster’s purpose, so judging either totem by its own attack is the wrong test. A support totem is successful when the additional damage or faster firing from nearby attackers is worth more than the damage an alternative attacker would have supplied in that position.
The buffs page also names Horus as an attack-speed buffer and Hellhound as an attack-damage buffer. Those examples show that support is not limited to one visual type of totem; inspect the stated buff and its affected area for the specific monster.

The community wiki calls placing a strong damage dealer between buffing totems “toteming.” The idea is simple: place the primary attacker where both adjacent buffs can reach it, then use the remaining spaces for coverage and control. It is a common strategy, not a universal formation requirement. A narrow lane, a wave with multiple approach paths, or a monster whose useful attack is global may make a different arrangement better.

Before moving a support monster, check exactly who receives the buff. “Adjacent” is a positional condition, not a promise that every monster on the board benefits. Repositioning one attacker can remove a buff from another, and a control totem placed too far from the lane may contribute less than an additional damage dealer.
Support can include control
Sluggy illustrates why the support category is broader than “buffs.” Slowing enemies supports the whole team by extending the time available for attacks. A monster that both damages and controls may be classified by whichever effect solves the current problem: use it as a damage source when enemies die quickly, or value its control when a wave is reaching the king.
Element matchups are a separate decision
Role and element answer different questions. Role tells you what the monster does; element helps determine how well that attack performs against a particular enemy type. The documented relationship is a three-way matchup:

This table does not say that every fire monster is a better damage dealer than every ice monster. It only describes the matchup axis. A control effect can still be valuable when the elemental relationship is unfavorable, and some attacks do not apply the status you might expect from their element. Review the individual ability, the wave’s enemy types, and the monster’s coverage together.

How to compare two monsters for a real wave
Use the following process when deciding between damage, stun, and support options:
- Identify the failure point. Are enemies surviving too long, reaching the king, or activating special powers? A damage shortage, a control shortage, and a placement problem require different fixes.
- Write down each candidate’s primary contribution. Mark it as direct damage, stun, freeze, slow, attack-damage buff, or attack-speed buff. If it has several effects, record all of them rather than forcing one label.
- Check coverage. Note single-target, area, lane, or global reach. Do not call an effect global unless the ability description or documented example supports that conclusion.
- Check reliability. Confirm that the individual attack actually applies stun or freeze, and account for the shared control cooldown. A theoretical status effect that rarely triggers may be less useful than dependable damage.
- Check placement. For Mighty, Speedy, Horus, Hellhound, or another adjacency-based buffer, map which attackers are in range. For a control monster, confirm that its attack can reach the enemies causing the problem.
- Check the elemental matchup. Compare the monster’s element with the wave’s enemies, then decide whether the role benefit outweighs a disadvantageous matchup.
- Retest after one change. Move or replace one monster at a time so you can tell whether the improvement came from damage, control timing, or a buffed position.
Concrete examples of each role
Sparky: area stun as control
Sparky’s monster page describes an area stun lasting two seconds. That makes Sparky a clear example of a control monster whose value is measured by the time enemies spend unable to move, attack, or use special powers. The example does not establish that Sparky is the best stun choice in every mode; compare its coverage and timing with the wave you are facing.
Slime King: a global-stun example
The Joint Revenge guide uses Slime King as an example of a special attack that stuns globally. “Global” describes the reach of that documented special attack, not a universal ranking. If the wave contains threats spread across lanes, global control may solve a problem that a local stun cannot; if enemies are already concentrated in one area, a different attack pattern may be sufficient.
Mighty and Speedy: nonattacking buff totems
Mighty and Speedy demonstrate pure support. They are valuable because adjacent monsters hit harder or attack faster, not because the totems clear enemies themselves. Their practical test is whether the attackers they cover gain enough output to justify the formation space.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming element guarantees a status. Fire, ice, lightning, and type-less attacks do not automatically provide every associated effect. Read the ability and confirm whether it says stun, freeze, or slow.
- Building only control. Stun and freeze buy time, but the shared control cooldown prevents a permanent lock. Keep enough direct damage to finish enemies during the openings.
- Ignoring adjacency. A Mighty or Speedy outside the relevant range is not buffing the attacker you intended. Re-map the positions after every move.
- Calling a monster “best” from one example. A global stun, a two-second area stun, or a strong buff demonstrates a mechanic, not a complete tier ranking. Mode, upgrades, enemies, and placement can change the result.
- Using an unfavorable element without a reason. A control effect may justify the choice, but make that trade deliberately instead of overlooking the matchup.
- Changing several variables at once. If you replace two attackers, move a totem, and alter the element mix simultaneously, you cannot identify which change solved the wave.
Keeping ability information current
The mechanics summarized here come from the Summoner’s Greed Fandom community wiki. Its buffs and crowd-control material was crawled roughly three months before this article was prepared, and individual page revision dates were not established. Game balance and ability descriptions can change. Before making a current-meta recommendation, verify the monster’s live ability text and the status behavior in the version you are playing.
The durable lesson is the framework: damage clears, control interrupts, and support multiplies or extends the team’s opportunities. Treat those as separate axes, then combine them according to coverage, placement, reliability, and elemental matchup.
