Evolution and star promotion are different systems in Summoner’s Greed. Evolution consumes a specified type and amount of Evo Gems for an eligible monster. Star promotion comes from duplicate summons, advancing a monster through Bronze, Silver and Gold star bands. You do not need duplicate copies to evolve a monster.
Use the Evolve Portal in your current game to confirm eligibility and price before spending anything. Costs, eligible monsters, mode rewards and balance can change, so older community tables are useful examples rather than a permanent price list.
Evolution versus star promotion
The two upgrades affect progression in different ways and require different resources. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to spend materials on the wrong objective.

The evolution explanation comes from the Summoner’s Greed Wiki’s Monster Evolution page, which is community maintained. The nine-star promotion description comes from a player FAQ, not an official publisher specification. Pixio’s company and games pages identify the publisher and game but do not document these mechanics: Pixio and Pixio Games.

What evolution does
Evolution is a late-game system available only to certain monsters. The Evolve Portal is the authoritative place for your account: it lists eligible monsters and shows the required gem type and amount. Generic Evo Gems, Fire Gems, Ice Gems and Electric or Lightning Gems are associated with different monsters. The exact roster and labels can change, so do not assume that a monster shown in an old guide is still eligible or has the same price.
What promotion does
According to the 2022 community FAQ, duplicate summons move a monster through nine stars: three Bronze, three Silver and three Gold. After a monster reaches 3 Gold stars, additional duplicates are described as converting to gold rather than adding another star. This is a player-written explanation and should be checked against the current summon screen; it is not evidence that duplicates are an evolution requirement.
How to evolve a monster
The interface path is short, but the confirmation screen matters because it prevents guesses about cost and eligibility.
- Open the Summoning Chamber.
- Select the Evolve Portal.
- Choose a monster from the eligible list.
- Read the displayed gem type and required quantity. Note whether the game calls the resource Electric or Lightning.
- Compare the displayed cost with the benefit and with your other possible uses for those gems.
- Confirm only when you are comfortable with the irreversible or resource-consuming decision shown by the game.
If the monster is absent, the most likely explanation is that it is not currently eligible, rather than that you are missing a hidden button. The wiki describes evolution as restricted to certain monsters and directs players to the portal list. Because that list can be updated, use the in-game screen instead of relying on a static roster.
How to get evolution gems
Master’s Challenge
The community wiki says Master’s Challenge unlocks after you summon 18 unique monsters. It describes Evo Gems being awarded for completed waves and occasional enemy drops. The same source associates elemental evolution gems with named challenges: Ice Queen’s Tempest, Wrath of the Volcano Goddess and Kami Pantheon’s Retribution. These unlock and reward details are community-wiki information, not an independently confirmed official ruleset. Check the mode description in your game for the current requirement and payout.
- Build toward the stated 18-unique-monster requirement only if the mode is still locked in your version.
- Once unlocked, inspect each wave’s reward preview and the post-battle results; do not assume every run pays the same gem type.
- Record which challenge supplies the element your target evolution needs. Farming generic Evo Gems will not substitute for a portal requirement that specifies Fire, Ice or Electric/Lightning Gems.
- Recheck the mode after updates because unlock conditions and drop tables are balance-sensitive.
Enemy drops and mode rewards
The wiki’s wording combines wave completion rewards with occasional enemy drops. That means a single run may not produce a predictable number of gems, and a particular enemy is not guaranteed to drop one every time. Use the actual result screen as your account’s record rather than planning around a fixed drop rate.

Do not treat old price tables as farming targets
A Reddit FAQ from 2022 lists example prices, but comments on that post note that parts of the information need updating. The table below preserves those figures only as dated illustrations; it is not a current price list.

Which monster should you evolve first?
There is no authoritative universal “best first evolution” or level-400 rule. The sensible target depends on the wall your team is currently hitting, the gem cost shown in your portal and whether the upgrade changes your ability to clear the mode you care about.
1. Identify the bottleneck
Classify the problem before choosing a monster:
- Damage: enemies survive long enough to overwhelm the map.
- Support or buff coverage: your damage dealer is strong on paper but lacks the amplification, range or uptime needed for the stage.
- Crowd control: enemies reach the exit because slowing, stunning or stalling does not last long enough.
- Mode-specific survival: a challenge has a resistance, wave pattern or timing problem that ordinary farming does not expose.
Evolution is most valuable when it directly addresses that bottleneck. An expensive elemental evolution that improves a monster you rarely field may be less useful than leveling the carry already clearing most of your content.
2. Secure the central damage dealer
A player-written beginners guide recommends directing early coins to the main DPS and nearby buffing units. That is strategy advice, not a game rule, but it gives a practical default: if one damage dealer is responsible for clearing waves, test whether more levels or an evolution would let that unit cross your current progression wall before diverting resources elsewhere.

Check your actual placement and uptime rather than assuming every support upgrade improves the whole map.

3. Delay low-impact support spending when appropriate
The same beginner guide advises leaving example stalling units unupgraded early and cautions against spending coins broadly on support monsters. This does not mean support is useless. It means support should be funded when its control, buff or debuff solves the specific failure you are seeing. If enemies die before control matters, additional stall levels are an opportunity cost; if one late wave leaks, the calculation changes.

4. Compare the material route with the payoff
Before committing, write down the portal’s current gem requirement and answer four questions:
- Can you earn that gem type through a mode you can already clear?
- Will the evolution help in the mode where you are blocked, rather than only in an easier farm?
- Would the same farming time produce more immediate progress by leveling the carry or a necessary buff?
- Is the monster used often enough that the benefit justifies consuming a scarce elemental currency?
Do not convert a generic gem balance into an assumed equivalent value for Fire, Ice or Electric/Lightning Gems. The portal’s requirement is specific.
Evolution and promotion decision matrix
Use this matrix when two candidates compete for your next investment.

When evidence comes from community guides, treat it as a planning aid. Neither the old FAQ’s damage multipliers and upgrade-cost claims nor later player recommendations constitute a controlled, current balance test.

Is leveling more expensive after evolution?
No reliable source in the available material establishes a current rule that evolution increases a monster’s normal level-up price. The evidence discusses evolution costs in gems and early coin priorities, but it does not provide a verified before-and-after coin schedule. Do not assume either that leveling becomes more expensive or that it remains identical without checking your own upgrade screen.

Confusing duplicates with evolution materials
Symptom: You are saving duplicate summons for a monster you want to evolve.
Fix: Open the Evolve Portal and read the listed gem requirement. Duplicates relate to the community-described star system; evolution uses the specified Evo Gem type.
Farming the wrong gem
Symptom: Your generic Evo Gem total rises, but the portal still shows zero progress toward a Fire, Ice or Electric/Lightning requirement.
Fix: Match the target’s exact element to the challenge or reward route shown in your current game. Keep separate notes for generic and elemental currencies.

Following an obsolete cost screenshot
Symptom: Your portal price does not match a guide’s table.
Fix: Trust the current in-game display, record the date and game version if visible, and treat the older figure as historical context only.
Spending coins across the entire roster
Symptom: Many monsters have modest levels, but the team still cannot clear the next wall.

Fix: Concentrate early coins on the main DPS and the support units that directly amplify or enable it. Expand spending when a specific control or survival failure justifies it.
Assuming one threshold works for every monster
Symptom: You delay an affordable, useful evolution because a post says to wait for a particular level, or you evolve automatically at that level despite a poor material route.
Fix: Compare the actual portal benefit, your current bottleneck and the opportunity cost. No authoritative universal level threshold was established.
A practical upgrade checklist
- Write down the stage or mode you cannot clear and the exact failure: damage, support, control or survival.
- List the monsters you actually field for that mode.
- Open the Evolve Portal and note each candidate’s eligibility, gem type and current quantity.
- Check whether Master’s Challenge or another currently available activity supplies the needed currency.
- Estimate whether leveling the carry or an adjacent enabling unit would solve the same problem for fewer scarce resources.
- If considering promotion, count realistic duplicate opportunities and confirm the current Bronze, Silver and Gold progression in the summon interface.
- Spend only after checking the live in-game values; save a screenshot or note if the decision consumes a large stockpile.
What may change after an update
Balance recommendations are not permanent. The 2025 beginner guide explicitly warns that further balance changes may arrive and that its recommendations are subject to change. Recheck four items after a major patch: the Evolve Portal’s eligible list, each displayed gem cost, Master’s Challenge unlock and rewards, and the practical performance of your current carry and support lineup. A community guide can explain a system while still being outdated on numbers.
