For a current SuiteCRM 8.10.x deployment, choose a Linux VPS that can run Apache 2.4, PHP 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4, and MySQL 8.0/8.4 or MariaDB 10.6, 10.11, 11.4 or 11.8. Enable SuiteCRM’s required PHP extensions, point Apache at the application’s public directory, configure URL rewriting, and run both cron and (from SuiteCRM 8.10) a Symfony Messenger worker. SuiteCRM publishes software compatibility, but it does not publish a universal CPU or RAM minimum; size the machine from your users, data and background workload.
Supported software stack for SuiteCRM 8.10.x
The compatibility target for the current 8.10.x branch is a Linux, Unix or macOS platform capable of running the required web stack. A typical production VPS uses Linux. The official web-server installation pattern is LAMP-style: Apache, PHP and either MySQL or MariaDB.

These are compatibility constraints, not a guarantee that a preconfigured VPS image has a correct SuiteCRM environment. Distribution packages can select a different PHP minor release, disable extensions, omit Apache modules or expose the wrong database socket. Verify the running versions after provisioning.
PHP version history matters
SuiteCRM 8.7, released on 3 October 2024, raised the minimum PHP version to 8.1. Its release notes state that PHP 7.4 will not work from 8.7 onward. The compatibility matrix treats SuiteCRM 8.6 as the last branch for which PHP 7.4 was considered. Therefore, PHP 7.4 is not a safe choice for a current installation, even if an old server image still offers it.

For 8.10.x, select PHP 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4 and make the web-server PHP version and command-line PHP version consistent. A mismatch can make the installer pass one check while cron or maintenance commands fail under another interpreter.

IMAP and LDAP are optional in the installation guide. Install them only when your deployment needs mailbox polling or directory integration, and verify that the extension package matches the selected PHP minor version.
Rewrite rules and the public document root
Enable Apache URL rewriting. SuiteCRM Core API requests rely on rewrite rules; without them, routes such as api/graphql can return HTTP 404 even though the files are present. Also set the virtual-host document root to SuiteCRM’s public directory. Serving the project root instead can expose configuration and other files that should remain outside the web-accessible tree.

After changing the virtual host, reload Apache and test both the login page and an API request. A successful home page with failing API calls usually points to rewrite or document-root configuration rather than a PHP-version problem. Keep the application outside the web root when possible, and grant the web-server account only the write access required for cache, uploads and runtime directories.
Production dependencies versus development tools
The pre-built installable ZIP is intended to contain what production needs. Node, Angular CLI and yarn/npm are development dependencies for building the front end; they are not required on a production VPS when you deploy the pre-built package. Installing them does not compensate for a missing PHP extension, an incorrect Apache root or an absent background worker.
Background processing: cron and the Messenger worker
Cron runs schedulers
SuiteCRM requires a cron job to execute scheduled tasks such as workflows, email checks and report generation. A web request alone will not reliably perform these jobs. Configure cron under the account and path used by the installation, use the same PHP binary and environment that the web application uses, and record output so failures are visible.
When a scheduler appears idle, check the cron service, the crontab entry, the working directory and permissions first. Confirm that the command actually starts by writing a timestamp to a log, then inspect SuiteCRM’s scheduler status and application logs. Avoid running the job simultaneously from multiple crontabs; overlapping runs can create duplicate work or lock contention.

SuiteCRM 8.10 and asynchronous tasks
Starting with SuiteCRM 8.10, asynchronous tasks such as manual migrations are processed by the Symfony Messenger worker. The worker is a separate long-running process; cron alone does not consume its queue. If it is not running, those tasks remain in a pending state even when the web interface is functioning.
Run the worker under a supervised service account and configure automatic restart after a crash or reboot. Keep its logs and monitor queue age. During an upgrade, verify that the worker is running before launching a migration, and leave enough CPU, memory and database capacity for the migration and normal traffic to coexist. A pending task is therefore a useful diagnostic clue: check worker supervision, queue connectivity and logs before repeatedly clicking the same action in the browser.

How much CPU, RAM and disk does SuiteCRM need?
Current official SuiteCRM compatibility and installation pages do not publish a universal CPU, RAM, storage or concurrent-user table. Do not treat a fixed “2 GB RAM” or “4 cores” value as an official requirement. A legacy installation page mentions a PHP memory_limit of at least 128M; that is a per-process PHP setting, not the total memory required by the VPS.
The right size depends on workload. Estimate each of the following before selecting a plan:

- Number of active and occasional users, including peak simultaneous sessions.
- Database size now and expected growth from contacts, activities, audit data and reporting.
- Volume and size of file uploads, email attachments and imports.
- Frequency and complexity of reports, workflows and scheduled jobs.
- Email polling volume and whether outbound mail is handled locally or through an external relay.
- Whether Apache, PHP workers, the database, cron and the Messenger worker share one host.
A practical sizing method
- Start with a VPS offering enough disk for the operating system, SuiteCRM files, database, uploads, logs and at least one safe backup set. Keep free space for temporary imports and upgrades.
- Install only the supported software stack and required extensions. Do not use an arbitrary memory or core number as proof that the server is adequate.
- Measure CPU, memory, PHP worker usage, database latency, disk I/O and queue age during normal use and during the busiest reports, imports and scheduled jobs.
- Leave headroom for concurrent web requests, cron activity, Messenger tasks, database maintenance and a version upgrade. If swapping or queue growth appears under ordinary peaks, increase resources before users experience timeouts.
- Reassess after real data accumulates. A small pilot with few records can hide the storage and report cost of a mature CRM.
Separating the database from the web and worker processes can improve isolation as usage grows, but it adds network, backup and administration requirements. A single VPS is simpler for a small deployment; it should still have reliable storage, monitoring and a tested restore process.

VPS selection checklist
SuiteCRM does not endorse a particular VPS vendor. Compare services against the software and operational controls SuiteCRM actually needs:
- PHP control: Can you select PHP 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4 and install matching CLI and Apache modules?
- Apache control: Can you run Apache 2.4, define a virtual host, enable rewriting and point the root at
public? - Database choices: Are the required MySQL or MariaDB versions available, with a supported upgrade path?
- Process management: Can you create cron entries and supervise a long-lived Symfony Messenger worker?
- Storage and backups: Is storage performance documented, and can you schedule backups, retain multiple generations and restore to a test location?
- Monitoring: Can you observe disk space, memory pressure, CPU, database health, Apache errors, cron failures and worker queue age?
- Location and compliance: Does the region meet your latency, data-residency and regulatory requirements?
A managed Linux VPS can be useful when your team does not want to maintain Apache, PHP, database packages, cron and worker supervision. Management does not remove the need to verify versions, extensions, backups and restore procedures.
Installation sequence that avoids common failures
- Provision the operating system. Choose a maintained Linux image, create an administrative account with key-based access, apply security updates and set the correct time zone.
- Install Apache 2.4 and the selected database. Use one supported MySQL or MariaDB version from the compatibility list and create a dedicated database and least-privilege account for SuiteCRM.
- Install PHP 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4. Enable every required module, including both
mysqliandpdo_mysql, then verify the web and CLI interpreters report the intended version. - Deploy the pre-built SuiteCRM package. Keep the project files outside the public web root where practical, and set Apache’s document root specifically to the package’s
publicdirectory. - Configure rewriting and permissions. Enable Apache rewrite support, reload the service, and grant narrowly scoped write permissions to runtime and upload locations.
- Run the installer and test the API. Check the browser login, a representative Core API route such as
api/graphql, database connectivity, file uploads and outbound email configuration. - Configure cron. Add the scheduler command using the same PHP binary and application path, capture output, and verify that a scheduled task executes.
- Start and supervise the Messenger worker. Use your init or process-supervision system, configure restart behavior and inspect logs. Confirm that an asynchronous task leaves pending status and completes.
- Set backups and monitoring. Back up both the database and uploaded files, test a restore, and alert on disk pressure, failed cron runs, worker exits and growing queues.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Installer reports a missing requirement
Compare the installer result with the active PHP binary, not merely the package installed on the server. List enabled modules for both CLI and Apache PHP, install the missing extension for the exact minor version, reload Apache and run the check again. If the database check fails, verify the server version, credentials, host and socket.

API endpoints return 404
Confirm that the virtual host points to public, Apache rewrite support is enabled, and the rewrite configuration is permitted for that directory. Reload Apache after changes and test api/graphql. A 404 on API routes with a working login page is commonly a routing configuration issue.

Check that cron is enabled, the entry uses the correct user and absolute paths, and the command can write to its log and required runtime directories. Look for overlapping entries, permission errors and a CLI PHP version different from the web version.
Manual migrations or other tasks stay pending
On SuiteCRM 8.10 and later, verify that the Symfony Messenger worker is running and connected to its queue. Inspect worker and application logs, restart the supervised process if it exited, and check database and disk capacity. Repeating the browser action without fixing the worker will not process the queued task.
The server becomes slow during reports or imports
Measure rather than guessing. Correlate CPU, memory, PHP worker saturation, database queries, disk I/O and swap with the event. Reduce overlapping scheduled work where possible, then add resources or separate services when measurements show a sustained bottleneck. Keep upgrade and backup windows in the capacity plan.
