Yes, you can use an audio cable for a subwoofer if it is an RCA cable and both devices have compatible line-level ports. In a typical home-theater setup, connect the receiver’s Sub Out or LFE port to the powered subwoofer’s LFE input with one RCA cable. Other setups may call for stereo RCA inputs or speaker wire instead, depending on the equipment.

Match the cable to the ports

Check the labels on the receiver or amplifier and the subwoofer before choosing a cable. An RCA Sub Out or LFE output carries a line-level signal; it should connect to a compatible RCA LFE or line input on a powered subwoofer. A cable that physically fits is not automatically appropriate for every output or input.

Source output Subwoofer input Typical connection
AV receiver Subwoofer or LFE output Powered subwoofer LFE input One RCA cable
Two-channel amplifier pre-out Powered subwoofer stereo RCA line inputs RCA line connection; follow the equipment manuals
Amplifier speaker outputs Subwoofer with high-level inputs Speaker wire
Suitable external amplifier for a passive subwoofer Passive subwoofer terminals Speaker wire from the amplifier

These are common connection types, not a guarantee that any particular devices have the ports listed. Klipsch describes the RCA sub or woofer line out as the optimal connection for a standard powered subwoofer, and notes that some models accept speaker wire through high-level inputs: Klipsch’s subwoofer connection guidance. Focal likewise instructs users with multichannel AV amplifiers to connect the subwoofer’s single LFE input to the amplifier’s dedicated subwoofer output: Focal’s connection instructions.

Choose the right connection for your subwoofer

Powered subwoofer with an LFE input

A powered subwoofer has a built-in amplifier. If your receiver has a dedicated RCA Sub Out or LFE output and the subwoofer has an RCA LFE input, connect them with one RCA lead. This is the straightforward case for using an RCA audio cable. Klipsch also confirms that its R-50PM can connect to a powered subwoofer using a single-ended RCA cable: R-50PM subwoofer connection instructions.

Stereo pre-out and line inputs

A two-channel amplifier may provide a pre-out rather than a dedicated subwoofer output. If the powered subwoofer has left and right RCA line inputs, use the wiring arrangement specified in both manuals. Some models accept a mono signal through just one input, but input guidance is model-specific. For example, Klipsch’s advice for the subwoofers covered by its control guidance is to use one RCA input for a mono signal and to prefer the L/LFE jack: Klipsch subwoofer input guidance. Do not assume that instruction applies to every subwoofer.

High-level input or passive subwoofer

Some powered subwoofers have high-level inputs designed for speaker wire from an amplifier’s speaker outputs. Use this route only if the subwoofer’s manual confirms those inputs are present and suitable. A passive subwoofer has no built-in amplifier, so it needs an appropriate external amplifier connected to its terminals with speaker wire. An RCA cable carries a signal; it does not provide the power needed to drive a passive subwoofer. Klipsch outlines the distinction between passive and powered subwoofers in its support information: Klipsch’s passive-subwoofer guidance.

Before you connect or buy a cable

  1. Read the port labels. Identify the receiver or amplifier output and the subwoofer input. Look for labels such as Sub Out, LFE, Line In, Pre Out, or High Level.
  2. Check both manuals. Confirm the intended connection and, for stereo line inputs, whether the model expects one RCA lead or a left/right pair.
  3. Use the matching cable type. Use RCA for compatible line-level ports and speaker wire only for compatible high-level inputs or an appropriately amplified passive subwoofer.
  4. Measure the route. Once you have confirmed that both ends use RCA line-level ports, choose a cable long enough to reach between them in your installation.

There is no universal cable choice for every subwoofer, and compatibility—not the label “audio cable”—is the deciding factor. The cited manufacturer guidance establishes connection types, not that a particular cable construction or price improves sound.
