Short answer: the frozen-pizza packages in the cited U.S. Walmart listings cost less upfront, while a Subway footlong Pizza Sub is one prepared meal at a restaurant-specific price. Frozen pizza is usually the better value when you will eat the package over multiple meals; Subway can be the better fit when you want one ready-to-eat serving without storing or cooking food. There is no universal winner because price, portion, toppings, and appetite differ.
One terminology correction matters: the U.S. menu evidence does not show a separate product called a “footlong pizza.” It lists a Pizza Sub in a Footlong size—a sandwich made with spicy pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers, and onions on Artisan Italian bread. This article compares that item with packaged frozen pizza.
What the comparison actually includes
Subway’s Footlong Pizza Sub
The cited Subway menu describes a Pizza Sub rather than a round pizza. The build is spicy pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers, and onions on Artisan Italian bread, with a Footlong size option. The menu page for Store 11301-0 lists the Footlong at $6.99 before any applicable tax or offer. See the Store 11301-0 menu.

Frozen pizza is a package, not automatically one meal
A frozen pizza has to be bought, stored, and cooked at home. The package can contain more food than one person eats at one sitting, and its serving count depends on the manufacturer’s label. Crust thickness, toppings, diameter, and net weight also vary. Therefore, comparing a complete frozen-pizza package with one Footlong as if they were guaranteed equivalent portions can produce the wrong answer.
What the cited prices show
The frozen examples come from Walmart’s indexed U.S. category listings. The listings show three packages: DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese, 27.1 ounces, at $5.97; DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese, 19.1 ounces, at $4.88; and Tombstone Supreme, 20.8 ounces, at $4.82. See the Walmart frozen-pizza category and the Walmart DiGiorno category.
| Example | Package size | Listed price | Price context |
|---|---|---|---|
| DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese | 27.1 oz | $5.97 | Walmart listing snapshot; retailer, location, time, and stock can change |
| DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese | 19.1 oz | $4.88 | Walmart listing snapshot; retailer, location, time, and stock can change |
| Tombstone Supreme | 20.8 oz | $4.82 | Walmart listing snapshot; retailer, location, time, and stock can change |
On sticker price alone, all three frozen examples are below the $6.99 Subway listing, and they are also below the highest indexed Subway examples. That is useful for a checkout comparison, but it does not prove that frozen pizza costs less per meal. It only establishes that the entire package costs less in these particular listings.
Portion and nutrition information
Subway’s January 2026 U.S. nutrition document treats one Footlong as two 6-inch servings. It lists one 6-inch Pizza Sub at 177 grams and 490 calories. Doubling those values gives 354 grams and 980 calories for a Footlong under that document’s convention. The document is available as Subway U.S. Nutrition Information, January 2026.
Individual Subway menu pages can display different nutrition totals, so do not combine a number from one page with a number from another without naming the source and date. The figures above are item-specific menu information, not a health recommendation and not a claim that every customized sandwich has identical nutrition.
For frozen pizza, use the net weight and labeled servings printed on the package you are considering. The cited packages weigh 19.1, 20.8, and 27.1 ounces, but package weight includes crust and toppings. Weight alone does not tell you how filling a slice will be, how many slices you will eat, or how much remains for another meal.

| Frozen example | Calculation from listing | Approximate result |
|---|---|---|
| DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese | $5.97 ÷ 27.1 oz | 22.0¢ per oz |
| DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese | $4.88 ÷ 19.1 oz | 25.5¢ per oz |
| Tombstone Supreme | $4.82 ÷ 20.8 oz | 23.2¢ per oz |
These are calculations from the cited Walmart prices and weights, not per-ounce figures published by Walmart. They compare package mass, including crust and toppings. They do not include preparation time, home energy use, storage, waste, freshness, or appetite. A lower per-ounce figure is not automatically a lower cost for the meal you actually eat.
There is no directly equivalent Subway per-ounce calculation in the menu evidence because the Subway listing supplies a sandwich price, while the nutrition document supplies a gram weight based on two 6-inch servings. Converting those into a cross-format “value” score would imply that bread, toppings, crust, and pizza cheese are interchangeable when they are not.
How to calculate your own cost per meal
Use the following process with the prices and portions available where you live:
- Record the real checkout prices. Write down the Footlong price at your chosen Subway store, including the specific coupon or app offer you will use. For frozen pizza, record the shelf or online price for the exact package, not a different size or flavor. Add tax only if you want an out-of-pocket total that includes it.
- Read the frozen label. Note net weight, servings per container, and the label’s serving size. A 27.1-ounce package and a 19.1-ounce package are not the same purchase even if both are called “pizza.”
- Estimate the fraction you will eat now. If you will eat the entire frozen pie, the meal cost is the package price. If you will eat half and safely keep the rest for another meal, divide the purchase price by two only when you realistically expect to use that second portion. If leftovers are discarded, count the full purchase price against the meal that generated the waste.
- Compare like with like. Compare one Footlong with the amount of frozen pizza that will feed the same number of people or meals. Do not divide a package price by its printed serving count if your household regularly eats more or less than that serving.
- Keep convenience separate from food quantity. Subway provides a prepared item. Frozen pizza requires freezer space, an oven or other cooking appliance, cooking time, and cleanup. You can describe those differences, but do not assign a dollar value to time or electricity unless you have measured your own costs.
- Recheck before repeating the purchase. Restaurant menus, grocery prices, stock, taxes, and promotional offers change. A calculation that is correct today may not be correct next week.
Illustrative arithmetic
Suppose the $5.97 frozen listing is split into two meals that are both eaten. The food cost is about $2.99 per meal ($5.97 ÷ 2), before any energy or other household cost. If the entire package is eaten in one meal, its cost remains $5.97. A $6.99 Subway Footlong is one prepared purchase at that listed store. These examples demonstrate why the number of meals consumed changes the result; they are not promises about anyone’s appetite or serving size.
Upfront price versus usable value
The gap between sticker price and meal value is easiest to see by separating three questions. First, what leaves your wallet today? In the cited examples, a frozen package costs $4.82 to $5.97, while the indexed Subway Footlong examples run from $6.09 to $8.95. Second, how much food will be eaten? A frozen package may be divided among people or saved, whereas the Subway purchase is already assembled as one Footlong. Third, what effort is required? Subway handles preparation; the frozen option shifts storage, heating, timing, and cleanup to the buyer.
For example, at the $6.99 Subway listing, a person who wants one immediate meal may reasonably compare $6.99 with the full price of a frozen pie only if the whole pie will be eaten at that sitting. If half the frozen pie becomes a planned second meal, the first meal is not fairly represented by the entire package price. On the other hand, if the second half is forgotten or discarded, dividing by two creates an artificial saving. The realistic number of meals, not the optimistic number printed on a calculator, determines the result.
Offers can also reverse a close comparison. A Subway coupon may lower the restaurant total, while a grocery promotion may reduce the frozen price. Delivery charges, minimum orders, and taxes can increase either checkout total. Because none of those items is standardized across locations, enter the exact offer and fees you will actually use rather than assuming a national deal.

Common comparison mistakes
- Calling the Subway item a whole pizza. It is a Pizza Sub on bread, so compare it with the kind of food you actually want.
- Using a package price as a serving price. The $4.82 to $5.97 listings are package totals, not guaranteed one-person meal costs.
- Ignoring package size. The cited frozen products range from 19.1 to 27.1 ounces, a substantial difference in quantity.
- Assuming printed servings match your household. Labels provide a reference, but your actual slice or portion pattern controls meal cost.
- Comparing unlike styles. Rising crust, classic crust, thin crust, meat-heavy, vegetable, and cheese pizzas differ in weight and appeal.
- Counting convenience as free. Subway is prepared and portable; frozen pizza needs equipment and time. Keep that practical difference visible even if you cannot price it precisely.
- Using stale prices. The menu and Walmart figures are snapshots. Check the local store, current stock, and current app or grocery price on the day you buy.
Convenience, preparation, and leftovers
When Subway has the practical advantage
- You want to eat immediately after purchase rather than plan cooking.
- You do not have freezer space, an oven, or time for preparation.
- You are buying one personal meal and do not expect to use leftovers.
- You prefer the specific Pizza Sub combination of pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers, onions, and Artisan Italian bread.
The Footlong’s price buys preparation and immediate portability as well as ingredients. Whether that convenience is worth the difference is a personal decision, not a measurable national value score in the available listings.

When frozen pizza has the practical advantage
- You can store the package and expect to eat the remaining portions later.
- You are feeding several people from one purchase.
- You want to choose among different crust styles, toppings, and package sizes.
- You already have the equipment and routine needed to cook it.
Frozen pizza’s apparent savings disappear when a household buys a package that is too large, lets leftovers go unused, or pays for a flavor no one wants. Conversely, a package used across multiple meals can lower the cost assigned to each meal even though the initial checkout total is close to or below one Subway purchase.
Toppings and format are part of value
The Subway item and a frozen pie are not interchangeable products. Subway’s Pizza Sub is a long sandwich with a defined topping combination. Frozen products vary in crust, cheese, meat, vegetables, diameter, slice count, and preparation method. A plain cheese frozen pizza, a loaded meat pizza, and a thin-crust vegetable pizza can have very different prices and amounts of edible food.
If you are comparing for a particular craving, match the style first. A lower-priced frozen cheese pie is not a fair substitute for a pepperoni-and-vegetable sandwich if you would need to buy extra ingredients to make it satisfying. Likewise, a premium loaded frozen pie may cost more than the examples above and change the arithmetic.
Nutrition: what can and cannot be compared
The January 2026 Subway document provides a specific Pizza Sub reference: 490 calories and 177 grams for a 6-inch serving, or 980 calories and 354 grams when doubled to the Footlong convention. Use the current package’s nutrition panel for frozen pizza because serving sizes and calories differ by product. Do not treat the Subway calculation as a recommendation to eat a particular amount.

What the evidence does not establish
The cited listings do not establish a national average Subway price, a national average frozen-pizza price, a universal serving size, current coupons in every market, tax treatment, delivery fees, or the amount each reader will eat. They also do not include a taste test, a laboratory comparison, or a measured cost for cooking energy and time. Walmart availability and prices are retailer-, location-, and time-dependent snapshots.

Those limits are why a conditional answer is more accurate than declaring one product the winner. The frozen examples are cheaper packages at the time and locations represented by the listings. Subway provides one prepared Footlong at a location-specific menu price. Your own meal count determines whether the package price becomes a lower cost per meal.
How to check before you buy
- Open your local Subway restaurant page or app and select the Pizza Sub in Footlong size.
- Record the displayed price after the offer you intend to use, and note whether tax or delivery changes the total.
- At the grocery store, photograph or write down the exact frozen pizza’s price, net weight, servings, and cooking requirements.
- Decide how many people will eat it now and whether leftovers will actually be used.
- Divide each purchase price by the number of meals you realistically obtain, then make a separate judgment about convenience and preferred toppings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Subway’s footlong pizza a whole frozen-style pizza?
No. The U.S. menu evidence lists a Pizza Sub in Footlong size: spicy pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers, and onions on Artisan Italian bread. It is a prepared sandwich, not a round frozen pizza.
Which costs less upfront in the cited examples?
The Walmart examples cost $4.82 to $5.97 per frozen package. The indexed Subway Footlong examples range from $6.09 to $8.95, including a $6.99 listing. These are location- and time-specific snapshots, not national prices.
How should I compare a frozen pizza that serves more than one person?
Use the package’s net weight and labeled servings, then estimate how many portions your household will actually eat. Divide the purchase price by the meals you realistically obtain; do not count leftovers that will be discarded.
What is the cost per ounce of the cited frozen pizzas?
Calculated from the listed Walmart prices and weights, DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat is about 22.0 cents per ounce, DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese about 25.5 cents, and Tombstone Supreme about 23.2 cents. These calculations include crust and toppings and are not meal-cost measures.
Does Subway’s nutrition document treat a Footlong as one serving?
The January 2026 U.S. nutrition document treats one Footlong as two 6-inch servings. It lists a 6-inch Pizza Sub at 177 grams and 490 calories, so doubling gives 354 grams and 980 calories under that document’s convention.

When is Subway likely to be the better value?
Subway can make more sense when you need one prepared meal immediately, lack cooking or freezer access, or do not expect to use frozen leftovers. The answer still depends on your local menu price, any offer, and the toppings you actually want.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Frozen pizza wins the cited checkout-price comparison, but not automatically the meal-value comparison. Use your local Subway price, the exact frozen package’s weight and servings, and the number of portions you will truly eat. Choose Subway for a ready-to-eat Pizza Sub and choose frozen pizza when shared or saved portions make the package cost less per meal.
