A subway route is not reliably accessible just because its stations are labeled accessible: a lift outage can break the path between a platform, transfer, and exit. I built AccessPath-ai for my sibling to make that problem visible in route planning. The details that determine whether it can help in practice are its city and transit agency, the source and freshness of outage data, and how it responds when that data is missing or changes.
Why an accessible label is not enough
For a rider who needs a step-free route, the entire journey matters: getting to the first platform, making every transfer, and reaching the destination exit. A station-level accessibility label cannot establish that each part of a particular trip is usable right now. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), for example, distinguishes fully and partially accessible stations and advises riders to check elevator status before travelling. Those are New York City-specific guidance and terminology, not a universal standard. MTA: View accessible subway stations
That is the design problem behind AccessPath-ai: a lift breaking can turn a route that looked possible into one that does not meet a rider’s needs. The title does not identify the city, the agency, or my sibling’s specific access requirements, so those details should not be inferred. Nor does the existence of a planner establish that it uses live data or has been tested with a disabled rider.

A planner should let a rider assess the whole journey, not just compare travel times. Transport for London (TfL) describes options for choosing whether a rider can use stairs or escalators, preferred transport modes, and how far they are prepared to walk. Its guidance also covers accessible maps and guides. TfL: Plan an accessible journey

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a lift-dependent trip, those preferences need to be considered alongside the status of the specific lifts a route depends on. Transport for NSW offers an example of an agency accessible-trip filter: its results show wheelchair-accessible vehicles and stops and interchanges without known lift or escalator outages. The agency also recommends checking service alerts and allowing extra time when lifts or toilets are out of order. This is an example of NSW agency information, not evidence that AccessPath-ai uses that feed. Transport for NSW: Planning an accessible trip
- Complete-path access: Check that boarding, transfers, and the destination path meet the rider’s stated needs.
- Required lift status: Identify which lifts the route relies on and whether their status is reported working.
- Walking and transfers: A route with fewer changes may involve more walking, or vice versa; the best option depends on the rider.
- Alternative modes: Where available and suitable, a bus or another route may avoid a failed lift.
- Uncertain information: A missing or ambiguous status should be visible to the rider, not silently treated as confirmation that the lift works.
How lift information can inform rerouting
Outage-aware planning requires matching an alert to the equipment and route segments that depend on it. TfL’s March 2017 customer-information strategy described blocking unavailable lift or escalator assets from journey results in real time and providing information about planned and real-time closures through an API. That document records a design description from 2017; it does not establish current API access, current service terms, or what data AccessPath-ai uses. For any specific planner, readers need to know the transit agency and data source, when the status was last checked, how an outage is matched to a lift on the proposed path, and what the planner does when a feed is stale or incomplete. A route recommendation without that context cannot tell a rider how much confidence to place in it. Check the agency’s current status and alerts for the stations and travel time involved; an earlier check is not a guarantee that conditions have stayed the same.

Transit agencies illustrate useful features, but their policies, labels, and data are specific to their systems. The MTA’s accessible transit guide says its accessible trip option accounts for current service status and elevator outages. Its app help also describes looking up outages by station or equipment ID and filtering by alert type. These are New York City examples, not proof of AccessPath-ai’s data sources or functions. Coverage is another separate question from reliability. The Toronto Transit Commission says that at the end of 2024, 55 of its 70 stations had elevator access to train platforms and transfers. That dated Toronto figure describes access coverage; it does not measure how often lifts fail, whether a particular trip will work, or conditions in another subway system. TTC: Riding the Subway
How to check a proposed trip before setting out
- Set the rider’s actual access needs. Consider whether stairs or escalators are usable, how much walking is manageable, and which transport modes are suitable. TfL’s journey-planning guidance describes these kinds of preferences, though the available options vary by system. TfL journey-planning options
- Review every leg and transfer. Confirm that the complete path, not only the origin and destination stations, fits those needs.
- Check current lift alerts. Look up the relevant stations and equipment in the local agency’s status information for the intended travel time. For an MTA trip, the agency describes station or equipment-ID searches and alert-type filters in its Status tab. MTA Status tab guidance
- Compare alternatives. Weigh walking distance, transfers, and suitable modes against the access requirements. NSW notes that filtering for accessible services can reduce the number of options; a shorter list is a trade-off to inspect, not a reason to relax a necessary requirement. Transport for NSW accessible-trip guidance
- Recheck when conditions may have changed. If the status is missing, unclear, or out of date, consult agency alerts or contact the agency rather than assuming the lift is available. Allow extra time when the agency advises it.
What AccessPath-ai can claim depends on what it verifies
The account of a build is not, by itself, evidence of live outage data, a tested rerouting method, or successful use by a disabled rider. Those claims depend on concrete details: which city and agency the planner covers; what data it reads and how often it refreshes; how it identifies the lift relevant to a route; whether it offers alternatives such as buses; and how it handles stale or unclear statuses. If the planner has not been tested in those conditions, its recommendations should be presented as planning assistance rather than a guarantee that a journey is accessible.
