Subtlefakes are non-consensual intimate images altered just enough to make their artificial or manipulated nature harder to notice. They do not have to be fully AI-generated to cause harm: X’s policy explicitly covers images that digitally place one person’s face onto another person’s nude body. The phrase “taking over X” comes from a 404 Media report; the available evidence does not establish how prevalent subtlefakes are across the platform.

What makes an image a subtlefake?

“Subtlefake” is the term Emanuel Maiberg used in a 404 Media report published August 20, 2026, for non-consensual AI imagery made harder to recognize through relatively slight alterations. It is a descriptive label, not a separate category in X’s published rules.

The broader issue is known as non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), non-consensual intimate media (NCIM), or image-based sexual abuse. An image may be abusive whether it is entirely synthetic, edited from a real photograph, or assembled by combining a real face with another person’s nude body. The relevant question is not only whether the image is “fake,” but whether the intimate imagery was made or shared without the depicted person’s consent.

X’s non-consensual nudity policy says users may not post or share intimate photos or videos produced or distributed without consent. Its examples include hidden-camera material, creepshots and upskirts, as well as images that superimpose or digitally manipulate someone’s face onto another person’s nude body. X separately permits consensually produced adult content when it is marked sensitive; that allowance does not make non-consensual imagery acceptable.

Does the “taking over X” claim establish how widespread subtlefakes are?

No representative count of subtlefake images across X is available in the sources cited here. The 404 Media report describes a visible trend and increasing sophistication, but its “taking over” framing should be read as the report’s characterization, not as a quantified platform-wide finding.

Other figures help describe the surrounding ecosystem, but they measure different things. An Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) report published in October 2025 said that 31 active tools for creating sexually explicit imagery were readily discoverable on X, 4chan and common search engines as of May 2025. ISD also counted almost 290,000 mentions of such tools on X from June 2020 through July 2025; those mentions represented 70 percent of mentions across the seven platforms and other sources it examined. These are tool-discovery and discussion figures—not counts of images, victims or subtlefakes.

A separate 2024 audit tested how X handled a small set of reports, not how common the imagery was. The audit’s results are important when considering reporting routes, but they cannot establish current platform-wide prevalence or guarantee what will happen to an individual report.

How to report non-consensual intimate imagery on X

X’s published in-app route is to report the post and identify it as unauthorized intimate content. Follow the labels in this order:

  1. Open the post’s reporting menu and report the post.
  2. Choose that it displays a sensitive photo or video.
  3. Select “Unauthorized photo or video.”
  4. Select “Unauthorized intimate content.”
  5. Identify whom the report is on behalf of, then submit it.

X says a report may include up to five posts. Its policy allows anyone to report certain listed categories, while some categories may require the affected person or an authorized representative to report. The flow asks you to identify whom the report concerns, so follow the instructions shown for the specific case.

X says it will immediately and permanently suspend an account it identifies as the original poster of intimate media created or shared without consent. In some other cases, it may require the content’s removal, temporarily lock the account, and suspend it after a repeat violation. These are X’s stated policy and enforcement claims; they are not independent evidence of how consistently reports are handled.

How the reporting routes differ

Platform reports, copyright complaints and legal removal requests are separate processes. They have different eligibility rules and scopes; a copyright route is not a general substitute for reporting non-consensual imagery.

Route Who can submit What it covers Scope and timing established here
X’s unauthorized-intimate-content report X says anyone can report certain categories; some categories may require the affected person or an authorized representative. X’s platform policy, including intimate imagery made or shared without consent and digitally manipulated face/body composites. Use the in-app flow. The policy says up to five posts may be included; it does not state a removal deadline.
Copyright report The person or representative must have a valid copyright basis to submit a complaint. The 2024 audit tested this route; its result does not establish who can claim rights in another person’s case. A copyright claim, not non-consensual imagery as a category. In the 2024 audit, all 25 images reported through the copyright condition were removed within 25 hours. That historical result is not a promise about current reports.
TAKE IT DOWN Act request in the United States The affected person, or someone acting for them, can submit a valid request through a covered platform’s process. Covered intimate imagery, including real images and digital forgeries, and known identical copies. The FTC says a covered platform must remove the material and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. This is a U.S. legal requirement, not X’s ordinary report deadline.

The 2024 X audit reported a stark difference between its two tested channels: researchers submitted 50 AI-generated nude images, split evenly between copyright and non-consensual-nudity reporting conditions. All 25 images in the copyright condition were removed within 25 hours; none of the 25 in the non-consensual-nudity condition was removed during the 21-day study. This was a limited experiment conducted in 2024, not evidence that every copyright complaint succeeds or that current X reports will have the same outcomes. Do not file a copyright notice unless you have a genuine copyright basis.

What the TAKE IT DOWN Act means in the United States

The Federal Trade Commission’s May 2026 guidance says the U.S. TAKE IT DOWN Act covers real intimate imagery and “digital forgeries,” including images created or altered using software, apps or AI. When a covered platform receives a valid request, it must remove the covered image and known identical copies within 48 hours. The law also requires covered platforms to provide a clear way to make a request.

The FTC’s guidance lists a potential civil penalty of $53,088 per violation. That figure is a potential penalty stated by the FTC, not compensation automatically paid to the person depicted. The Act’s scope and process apply in the United States; they should not be treated as a worldwide removal rule.

What is known about the UK response?

In an update dated February 3, 2026, UK regulator Ofcom said it had contacted X on January 5 and opened a formal investigation on January 12. The investigation concerned whether X had adequately assessed and mitigated the risk of sexual deepfakes spreading and removed them quickly once identified. It was still ongoing in that update, and Ofcom said X had told it that measures had been implemented. That dated status does not establish the investigation’s outcome or current status.

Why individual posts are only part of the problem

Tools, promotion and distribution can all enable image-based sexual abuse. ISD’s October 2025 report documented tools promoted and sold through adult discussion forums, search engines, 4chan and X, and recommended addressing both distribution and discovery—for example, removing harmful content and limiting tools’ visibility in search results.

A September 2026 white paper from UC Berkeley’s Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity analyzes the wider value chain, including human creators and distributors, models, deployment and distribution. Its central implication is that focusing only on the person who posts an image can miss other actors and services that help make the abuse possible.

In the 404 Media report, image-forensics expert Hany Farid described large social platforms as “really struggling under the weight of this for the first time.” That is Farid’s assessment, not a measured finding. The report also discusses engagement monetization as a plausible incentive for some accounts to post repeatedly; it does not establish the motive of every account sharing manipulated imagery.
