Choose Substack if you want to launch a paid newsletter quickly with almost no technical setup. Choose WordPress if you are building a durable publication with a branded website, search strategy, multiple content types, integrations, and long-term control. A staged approach can combine them: use Substack to test demand and its discovery network, then make WordPress your canonical site after planning the import of posts, subscribers, and media.

The right choice depends less on which editor feels nicer and more on where you want the business and audience to live. Substack bundles publishing, email delivery, subscriptions, and network discovery. WordPress gives you a content-management system and control over the site, but you must manage more of the publishing stack.

Substack and WordPress at a glance

These products solve overlapping but different problems. Substack is a hosted, newsletter-first service. WordPress is a general-purpose publishing platform that can power a newsletter, magazine, documentation site, membership operation, store, or several of those at once.

Decision area Substack WordPress
Fastest launch Very little setup; write, configure publication details, and start sending. More decisions involving hosting or a managed plan, theme, plugins, email delivery, and security.
Publishing model Newsletter posts delivered by email, with a web archive and optional paywall. Full CMS for posts, pages, custom content types, archives, landing pages, and more.
Paid subscriptions Native subscriptions and paywall; Substack takes 10% of each paid subscription. Available through a plan or connected services; WordPress.com advertises 0–10% transaction fees depending on plan.
US payment examples Stripe documentation cited by Substack lists 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment and 0.7% for recurring Billing. Exact payment-processing and service costs depend on the selected plan and connected providers.
Discovery Notes, recommendations, and Substack’s internal network. Discovery primarily comes from search, direct audience building, referrals, and integrations you select.
Design and architecture Constrained publication layouts and site structure. Themes, plugins, custom templates, navigation, taxonomies, and code-level control.
Ownership and portability Posts and subscriber data can be exported; exports do not include ownership of Substack’s recommendation network. WordPress.com says posts, subscriber list, and data belong to you and can be exported at any time; self-hosting offers an additional open-source path.
Operational responsibility Hosting and core delivery are managed for you. On a managed plan, the provider handles much of the infrastructure; with self-hosting, you are responsible for hosting, updates, backups, email, plugins, and security.

What you are actually choosing

Substack: a newsletter business in a box

Substack puts the email publication at the center. A post can appear on the web and be sent to free or paid subscribers, while the service supplies subscription checkout and a paywall. The setup is intentionally narrow: fewer choices mean a solo writer can publish without first assembling a website stack.

That narrowness is also the trade-off. If your publication needs a complex section hierarchy, highly customized templates, product catalogues, advanced analytics, or several content formats, you may eventually encounter limits. Your publication’s growth can also become tied to Substack’s recommendation and discovery systems.

WordPress: a publishing system you can extend

WordPress separates the content-management layer from the specific site you build around it. You can create a news-style archive, evergreen resource library, personal site, membership publication, or a combination. Themes control presentation; plugins and integrations add functions; and a custom domain and information architecture can be designed around your brand.

The flexibility has a cost in decisions and maintenance. You must choose between WordPress.com and self-hosting, select an appropriate plan or host, configure email delivery, and keep extensions secure and compatible. A managed WordPress.com plan reduces infrastructure work, while self-hosting gives you more direct control but makes operations your responsibility.

Cost: percentage fees versus a broader stack

Substack’s published charges

Substack support says, “Publishing on Substack is free, no matter how many subscribers you have,” in documentation updated September 29, 2026. The platform takes 10% of each paid subscription. Payment charges are separate: Substack’s cited Stripe documentation gives 2.9% plus $0.30 for a US card payment and 0.7% for recurring Billing. A custom domain costs a one-time $50.

Substack’s minimum US-dollar paid price is $5 per month or $30 per year. Those are minimums, not recommended prices. Existing subscribers keep their original rate after you change the price, so a later increase does not automatically reprice your current base.

A useful way to estimate net revenue is:

The percentage model is simple when you are starting because there is no monthly publishing charge tied to subscriber count. As paid revenue grows, however, the 10% share grows with it. Payment fees also vary with transaction method and region; the figures above describe the US-dollar card example supplied in Substack’s documentation, not every country or payment method.

WordPress.com’s published transaction range

WordPress.com advertises 0–10% transaction fees for paid subscriptions depending on the plan. It also supports importing a Substack subscriber CSV. The exact plan, payment provider, email service, hosting arrangement, premium extensions, and maintenance choices determine your total cost, so there is no single WordPress price that can be compared honestly with Substack’s percentage.

For a managed WordPress.com setup, the plan bundles more of the site infrastructure. For self-hosted WordPress, budget for hosting, domain registration, transactional or marketing email, backups, security, and any paid themes or plugins you select. Those costs may be fixed, usage-based, or optional, and the supplied documentation does not establish a universal 2026 total.

How the economics change as you grow

  • Early validation: Substack’s no-monthly-publishing-fee model minimizes upfront commitment while you test whether readers will pay.
  • Higher paid revenue: A 10% platform share becomes a substantial recurring expense, so compare it with the fixed and variable costs of a WordPress stack.
  • Mixed revenue: If you sell sponsorships, courses, events, merchandise, or memberships with different payment flows, WordPress can centralize those experiences, but each integration has its own fees and work.
  • Price changes: On Substack, existing subscribers retain their original rate; model new and legacy prices separately before changing a plan.

Ownership, portability, and what an export does not preserve

WordPress.com states: “Your posts, subscriber list, and data belong to you, and you can export them at any time.” Its documentation also describes importing newsletter content, subscribers, and media from Substack. That makes WordPress.com a practical destination for a staged move rather than a one-way commitment.

Substack exports are documented as HTML post exports and a CSV subscriber export. These files let you preserve the text, media references, and list data needed to rebuild a publication. They do not transfer Substack’s recommendation graph, Notes activity, or the audience relationships created inside that network. Treat an export as portable content and data, not as a portable distribution channel.

SEO, domain control, and discovery

Substack discovery

Substack’s recommendation and Notes features can expose a new publication to readers who already participate in its network. That is a meaningful advantage for a writer without an established audience or search presence. The trade-off is dependency: changes to the network, recommendations, or platform rules can affect how much of your growth comes from that channel.

WordPress search and site architecture

WordPress lets you design URL structures, categories, tags, internal links, metadata, schema through extensions, XML sitemaps, redirects, and landing pages around a deliberate search strategy. You can build topic hubs and evergreen archives instead of treating each issue primarily as an email event. Analytics and search tools can be selected and configured to match your goals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control does not guarantee rankings. WordPress gives you more levers; it also requires you to configure them, maintain technical quality, and publish material worth finding. The available evidence does not establish a controlled Substack-versus-WordPress study for deliverability, open rates, inbox placement, engagement, or subscriber conversion, so neither platform should be promised to produce a particular performance number.

Design, formats, and integrations

When Substack’s constraints are helpful

  • You write primarily text-based issues and want the same post to become an email and a web page.
  • You prefer a small number of layout decisions and do not want to maintain a theme or plugin set.
  • You need a native paywall and subscription checkout immediately.
  • You value network discovery more than a bespoke site structure.

When WordPress’s flexibility matters

  • You need separate sections, author pages, archives, resource libraries, or custom post types.
  • You want a publication design that differs substantially from the platform’s standard layouts.
  • You plan to connect CRM, analytics, commerce, membership, community, or workflow tools.
  • You want one domain to serve articles, landing pages, products, events, and documentation.
  • You expect to change hosting or move to self-hosting without rebuilding the entire publishing model.

Every added WordPress component introduces another update cycle and another possible failure point. Keep a written inventory of plugins, integrations, administrator accounts, backups, and renewal dates. A simpler configuration is often more reliable than a heavily customized one.

Newsletter delivery and paid membership decisions

Substack removes several operational choices: the service hosts the publication, handles the subscription workflow, and sends the newsletter through its own system. That is attractive when your scarce resource is writing time.

With WordPress, newsletter delivery is a separate design decision. A managed plan or an email integration can provide the sending layer, while WordPress remains the canonical content store. Confirm how the integration handles new subscribers, unsubscribes, bounced addresses, paid status, and historical consent. Do not assume that importing a CSV automatically recreates those states.

For a paid publication, compare the complete customer journey rather than only the platform percentage: sign-up, checkout, tax handling, receipt, access control, cancellation, refund, failed payment, and account recovery. Substack supplies more of that path by default. WordPress can support it, but the exact behavior depends on the plan and services you connect.

Migration: moving from Substack to WordPress without losing the audience

WordPress.com documents a route for importing Substack content, subscribers, and media. The safest migration is staged, with the old publication preserved until the new one has been checked.

  1. Inventory the current publication. List your domain, publication URL, free and paid tiers, subscription prices, authors, categories, static pages, welcome emails, media, redirects, and external integrations.
  2. Export from Substack. Download the HTML post export and subscriber CSV described in the platform documentation. Store the originals in a restricted location and record when each file was created.
  3. Prepare WordPress. Set up the target site, custom domain, theme, navigation, categories, authors, privacy settings, analytics, backups, and newsletter or membership services before importing a large archive.
  4. Import the archive. Use WordPress.com’s Substack import process for posts and media. Review formatting, image references, publication dates, authorship, tags, canonical URLs, and any embedded content on a sample before importing everything.
  5. Import and reconcile subscribers. Upload the CSV through the supported subscriber-import workflow, then compare counts and fields. Separate free, paid, cancelled, and unconfirmed records according to the receiving service’s rules and consent requirements.
  6. Rebuild paid access. Create the new products or membership levels, verify prices and billing intervals, and tell existing paid readers exactly whether they must resubscribe. Do not assume a CSV can transfer an active payment mandate.
  7. Test the reader journey. Register a test account, subscribe, unsubscribe, request a password reset, open an imported post on mobile, click every navigation item, and verify that images, forms, and paywalled pages behave as expected.
  8. Switch communication deliberately. Announce the move on Substack, publish the new canonical URL, and keep the old publication available long enough for readers to update bookmarks. Create redirects where your hosting arrangement supports them.
  9. Monitor after launch. Watch delivery errors, unsubscribe requests, broken links, search indexing, payment failures, and support messages. Keep the Substack exports and an archive backup until the new system has been stable through at least one complete publishing cycle.

The technical import is only half the migration. The recommendation network stays on Substack, so plan a direct-audience strategy on the new domain: clear signup forms, a welcome sequence, useful archive pages, and consistent publishing.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

Choosing on headline price alone

“Free to publish” describes Substack’s publishing charge, not the 10% share and payment fees on paid subscriptions. Conversely, a WordPress plan’s transaction percentage is only one part of a broader operating budget. Model your expected paid revenue, subscriber count, email volume, hosting, extensions, and maintenance before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming portability means identical functionality

HTML posts and a CSV preserve valuable assets, but they do not recreate recommendations, Notes, payment mandates, historical engagement, or every layout detail. Make a content map and test representative posts before announcing a final cutover.

Underestimating operational work

Self-hosted WordPress requires patching, backups, security controls, plugin compatibility checks, and recovery plans. If you do not have time for those tasks, use a managed arrangement or keep the architecture deliberately small.

Building a search strategy without maintenance

WordPress provides SEO control, not automatic visibility. Establish URL conventions, internal linking, redirects, metadata, sitemap monitoring, and a process for updating old articles. Avoid installing overlapping plugins that generate conflicting tags or canonicals.

Moving subscribers without clear consent and billing communication

Subscriber data is personal information. Follow the receiving service’s import rules, preserve consent records, and explain how billing, pricing, cancellation, and data handling will change. Give paid readers a clear action and support route instead of silently assuming their subscription transfers.

Which platform fits your publishing profile?

Choose Substack when speed and newsletter focus dominate

  • You are a solo writer validating demand.
  • Your primary product is a recurring email issue.
  • You want a native paid tier without assembling several services.
  • You value built-in recommendations and Notes as an acquisition channel.
  • You accept the 10% platform share in exchange for less technical work.

Choose WordPress when the website is the long-term asset

  • You are investing in a branded domain and durable search traffic.
  • You need multiple formats, sections, landing pages, or complex navigation.
  • You require integrations, custom analytics, commerce, memberships, or workflow automation.
  • You want to choose between managed hosting and a self-hosted open-source path.
  • You have the budget or skills to maintain the stack, or can pay for managed operations.

Use both in stages when you need discovery now and control later

A staged model can be rational for a new publisher: start on Substack, validate the topic and paid offer, export regularly, and build WordPress as the durable site once the information architecture is clear. Decide early which domain will become canonical, how subscribers will be synchronized, and how paid members will be moved. Without that plan, a temporary setup can become a difficult parallel system.

2026 decision checklist

  • Can you describe your primary product in one sentence: newsletter issue, website publication, membership, or a mixture?
  • Do you need Substack’s network discovery, or do you already have direct, search, or social distribution?
  • What would the 10% Substack share plus applicable payment fees cost at your expected paid revenue?
  • What WordPress costs are fixed, usage-based, optional, or operational in your preferred setup?
  • Who will handle updates, backups, security, email reputation, and incident recovery?
  • Which platform owns the canonical URLs and subscriber records?
  • How will free readers, paid readers, cancellations, refunds, and consent be represented after a move?
  • Do your design, content types, integrations, or analytics requirements exceed Substack’s constrained model?
  • Have you tested an export and import with representative posts before committing to a migration?

Verdict

For a newsletter-first solo publisher in 2026, Substack is the quickest route to publishing, paid subscriptions, and network discovery. Its simplicity is purchased with a 10% share of paid subscription revenue, payment fees, less control over site architecture, and dependence on the platform’s discovery ecosystem.

For a publisher building a lasting web property, WordPress is the better foundation. It offers broader content modeling, design and SEO control, integrations, exportability, and a route from managed hosting to self-hosting. The price is setup and ongoing operational responsibility.

If you are uncertain, start with the smallest system that lets you test the idea, export your work and list, and set a migration boundary. Substack is the better launchpad; WordPress is the stronger long-term home when the publication itself—not only the email issue—is the asset you are building.
