Two CIDR ranges overlap when they share even one IP address—including when one range is entirely inside the other. To check, compare the candidate range against every relevant local, cloud, peered, and connected-network range; for a small known inventory, Python’s standard library can test pairs with ipaddress. A quick check is not a guaranteed 30-second task: the time depends on how many ranges you need to find and compare.
What counts as subnet overlap?
Overlap is any intersection between two address ranges. Exact equality is only one case: a smaller CIDR contained within a larger CIDR overlaps too. Microsoft’s example, 10.0.0.0/16 and 10.0.1.0/24, demonstrates why checking only whether the range strings match is insufficient. Microsoft defines overlapping ranges as ranges where any portion of the IP address ranges intersects.
For a hand check, determine the address interval represented by each CIDR. If the intervals share any address, they overlap. Compare ranges of the same address family; IPv4 and IPv6 ranges do not intersect one another.

Start with the network you plan to connect or modify, then include every range it may encounter in the relevant topology. Depending on the setup, that inventory can include:

- Local subnet ranges, including primary and secondary ranges.
- Address spaces in networks connected through peering.
- On-premises ranges connected by VPN or other network links.
- Static route destinations and other route ranges that may conflict.
Google Cloud specifically advises considering on-premises ranges and static route destinations when planning subnets, and suggests checking routes from peering connections before creating a subnet. See its subnet documentation.

Check two ranges in Python
Python’s standard-library ipaddress module provides an overlaps() method. It returns true when either network partly or wholly contains the other. The following example prints True because the /24 is inside the /16:

print(left.overlaps(right))Use the method on the relevant pairs in your inventory. If you are checking ranges copied from configuration, parsing them with ip_network() also helps catch invalid CIDR notation rather than silently treating a malformed entry as clear. Python documents the network objects and overlap behavior in its ipaddress reference.
Check without code
- Write down the candidate CIDR and the ranges it could encounter.
- Look for identical ranges, containment, and partial intersection—not just matching network addresses.
- Resolve any overlap before relying on a peering or routing design; then verify the provider’s own restrictions for that topology.
This is a quick check when the inventory is small and known. Finding every relevant range in a hybrid or multi-account network may take longer than the comparison itself.

Why overlap matters in cloud networks
Overlapping ranges can prevent network peering or create route ambiguity, but the precise control depends on the provider and connection type. An overlap does not prove that every topology will fail in the same way; it is a warning to verify the specific platform’s rules and routing behavior.
AWS
AWS does not allow VPC peering between VPCs with matching or overlapping IPv4 or IPv6 CIDR blocks. If a VPC has multiple IPv4 blocks, an overlap can block peering even if you intend to use a different block or IPv6. AWS also warns that overlapping CIDRs can lead to incorrect routing in VPCs. Google Cloud
Google Cloud checks for overlapping subnet ranges when peering is established and rejects a peering with overlapping subnets. Its VPC Network Peering documentation describes that check. Subnet planning also needs to account for primary and secondary ranges, on-premises ranges, and static route destinations.

Azure
Azure virtual networks with overlapping address spaces cannot be peered. The Azure troubleshooting guide explains how to inspect address spaces in the portal or list them with az network vnet show. If you plan to remove or resize an address range, first verify that no subnet or resource is deployed in the portion being removed.

When a manual check is no longer enough
A pairwise check works for a few known CIDRs. It becomes fragile when ranges are allocated across many accounts or projects, change frequently, or connect to external and on-premises networks. In those environments, keep a shared address inventory and check allocations before deployment as well as after changes.

AWS VPC IPAM can surface resource overlap status and supports allocating CIDRs from IPAM pools; see its resource monitoring and pool allocation documentation. Microsoft recommends centralized IPAM to avoid future conflicts. These sources do not establish feature parity across products, so choose an inventory and allocation process that covers the networks your organization actually connects.
