Subnautica is not currently free to play on the Epic Games Store. The official Epic product page lists it as “Base Game” and shows a “Buy Now” button. It does not show the “Get” or “Free” labels used for a free store offer.
The confusion likely comes from an earlier Epic promotion in which Subnautica was available at no charge. That promotion does not make the game permanently free for accounts that did not claim it at the time. The current Epic listing is for the standalone game Subnautica, not Subnautica: Below Zero or a bundle.
Is Subnautica free on Epic Games right now?
No. As of August 7, 2026, Epic’s official listing presents Subnautica as a paid product. The page currently includes these store labels:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Store label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Base Game | The listing is for the standard Subnautica game. |
| Buy Now | You must purchase the game to add it to your Epic library, unless you claimed it during a previous promotion. |
| Gift | You can purchase the game for another Epic account. |
| Wishlist | You can save the product for later. |
| Epic Rewards | The purchase is associated with Epic’s rewards program. |
The page also lists Windows and macOS platform tabs. It identifies Unknown Worlds Entertainment as both the developer and publisher and gives the release date as January 23, 2018.

Why do people say Subnautica is free on Epic Games?
Subnautica was associated with a past Epic Games Store giveaway. Games claimed during an Epic giveaway are normally added permanently to the claimant’s library, but a previous giveaway does not mean that the product remains free for everyone else.
That distinction explains why older articles, social posts, videos, and search snippets can conflict with the current store page:
- Previously claimed: Open the Epic Games Launcher and check your Library. If you claimed Subnautica during an eligible promotion, you may be able to install it without buying it again.
- Never claimed: The current listing requires a purchase.
- Current giveaway: A game is free only while Epic displays an active giveaway offer and lets you claim it through the store.
How to check whether you already own Subnautica
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the Epic account used for previous giveaways.
- Select Library from the left-hand menu.
- Search for Subnautica.
- If it is in your library, select it and choose Install.
- If it does not appear, visit the official Epic product page while signed in. A listing that still shows Buy Now generally means the account does not own the game.
Check other Epic accounts if you have more than one. Ownership is tied to the account that claimed or purchased the game, not to the computer on which the Epic Games Launcher is installed.
How to buy Subnautica on Epic Games
- Go to the official Subnautica product page on the Epic Games Store.
- Sign in to the correct Epic account.
- Confirm that the product is Subnautica, not Subnautica: Below Zero.
- Select Buy Now.
- Review the live price and checkout details. Complete payment to add the game to your library.
- In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select Subnautica, and choose Install.
Do not rely on an old screenshot or a cached search result for the price. One captured version of the Epic page showed a $29.99 price crossed out and $7.49 as a sale price, with a sale-end message of July 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM. That date has passed, so the $7.49 figure is not a verified current price. Check the live product page and checkout before publishing or paying a specific amount.
Is there a command to get the Epic version for free?
No. The official Epic listing provides a normal storefront purchase flow through Buy Now. It does not document a command-line activation command or a command that grants free access.

Be cautious with websites or videos claiming that a console command, launcher command, crack, or third-party key can unlock the Epic edition. These methods are not part of Epic’s official purchase process and may expose your account or computer to malware. The legitimate options are to install a copy already owned by your Epic account, claim a genuine active giveaway, or purchase the game.
What version is listed on Epic?
The Epic page is for the original standalone Subnautica. It does not identify the offer as a bundle and does not state that Subnautica: Below Zero is included. If you want Below Zero, check its own product listing rather than assuming it comes with this purchase.

Bottom line on the Epic Games giveaway claim
“Subnautica is free to play on Epic Games” is outdated as a general statement. The game may be free for an Epic account that claimed it during a past promotion, but the current official store page lists the standalone base game with Buy Now. Check your Epic Library first; if you do not own it, use the live store price rather than an old giveaway article or screenshot.
