Start with Subnautica if you want the most established solo experience. Choose Below Zero for a separate follow-up in a colder region and broad console—including Nintendo Switch—availability. Choose Subnautica 2 if playing online with friends and cross-platform multiplayer matter more than having a finished, stable game; it entered Early Access on May 14, 2026.
Quick answer
These three games appeal to different kinds of players rather than forming a simple “newer is better” ladder. The original Subnautica is the safest first purchase for a solo player because it is an established release with a predictable campaign. Below Zero is also an established release, but it moves the setting to a colder region and is the practical choice when you want that follow-up or need a version documented for Nintendo Switch. Subnautica 2 is the only one of the three with officially listed online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, but it is still an Early Access game whose content and systems are expected to change.
The most important choice is therefore between finished solo exploration, a separate established follow-up, and newer multiplayer experimentation. Your platform, tolerance for unfinished features and whether your friends are ready to play on the same schedule should decide the purchase.

Subnautica: the best established starting point
The original game is the clearest recommendation when someone asks, “Which Subnautica should I play first?” It is the oldest of the three and has had time to settle into a known, complete release rather than an evolving development build. That matters for a first playthrough: you can begin without planning around an Early Access roadmap, experimental mechanics or a future content schedule.
Why it works as a first game
- Solo-first design: The cited records do not establish co-op for the original, so you can evaluate it on exploration and survival without organizing a group.
- Established release: Its PC launch and later console releases make it the most proven entry point in the comparison.
- Lower purchase uncertainty: A finished release gives you a more predictable campaign and fewer reasons to postpone a playthrough while waiting for planned additions.
“Established” does not mean every player will prefer it. If your main reason for buying is to explore with friends, the original does not meet the multiplayer requirement documented for Subnautica 2. It is also not the portable-console recommendation in the supplied records; that distinction belongs to Below Zero’s Switch release documentation.
Who should choose it
Pick Subnautica when you are new to the series, intend to play alone, want the least complicated buying decision, or prefer to experience the foundation before trying a follow-up. It is also the sensible gift when you cannot assume the recipient has a regular co-op group or a tolerance for Early Access.
Below Zero: an established colder-region follow-up
Below Zero is described in the cited release record as an open-world survival action-adventure and as a follow-up set in a colder region. It is not simply a multiplayer edition of the first game: the available evidence does not establish co-op, so treat it as another solo choice.
Why its position is different
- It is established rather than Early Access: You can approach it as a complete released game instead of a project whose scope is still moving.
- The setting changes the appeal: The colder-region premise gives returning players a distinct environment rather than asking them to replay the same setting.
- Portable-console option: The cited record specifically includes Nintendo Switch in its console-release documentation.
If you already know you want the original’s starting experience, play Subnautica first and move to Below Zero afterward. If your priority is a Switch purchase, Below Zero may be the more relevant first choice because that platform is explicitly documented for it. Do not infer that every feature or edition is identical across PC, console and Switch; verify the listing for the exact device you own.

Who should choose it
Choose Below Zero when you want an established solo game in a colder setting, are looking for the documented Switch option, or have finished the original and want a separate follow-up. It is also a safer choice than an Early Access title for a player who dislikes changing systems or incomplete roadmaps.
Subnautica 2: the multiplayer option, with Early Access risk
Steam lists Subnautica 2 as an underwater survival adventure developed by Unknown Worlds. The listing records an Early Access release date of May 14, 2026, and identifies single-player, online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer and Steam Cloud. The official store description says it is being crafted as a single-player experience that you can optionally play online with up to three friends. In practical terms, one player can explore alone, or a group can add as many as three other people.
What the co-op promise means
Co-op is optional rather than a requirement. You do not need a permanent group to begin, and a solo player can approach the game on its own. For a group, the listing’s cross-platform designation is the important detail: friends may be able to join from supported platforms rather than all purchasing on one storefront. Confirm that your specific platform combination is supported at the time you buy, because a store label is not a guarantee for every regional edition or future update.
What Early Access changes
Early Access is a development state, not a synonym for a discounted finished game. Unknown Worlds says updates are planned to add more biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narratives. That wording tells you the scope is intentionally expanding; it does not establish a final biome count, final story length or a completion date.
Expect the normal trade-offs of buying an evolving release:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Systems, balance and interface details can change between updates.
- Planned content may arrive in a different order or on a different schedule than players expect.
- A save or long-term plan can become less convenient if a major update changes progression, even when the store does not promise a reset.
- Guides written for an earlier build can become inaccurate.
Those are reasons to wait, not evidence that the game is poor. Early Access is a good fit when you enjoy watching a project develop, can tolerate unfinished edges and value the multiplayer option now. It is a poor fit when you want a fixed campaign, a final story or a purchase you can safely ignore for years.

Choose Subnautica 2 when your decision starts with “I need to play with friends,” when cross-platform multiplayer solves a real group problem, or when you specifically want to participate while the game expands. Choose it only after accepting that its content will change; do not buy it on the assumption that it already contains the eventual full experience.
How multiplayer changes the decision
The multiplayer question should be answered before you compare settings or release dates. In the supplied records, Subnautica 2 is the only title with an explicit co-op description. The earlier games’ cited sources do not establish co-op, so you should not promise a shared campaign, invite system or cross-play for them based on the series name alone.
If you are playing alone
Start with Subnautica for the most straightforward introduction. Below Zero is the alternative when its colder-region setting or Switch availability is more important to you. Subnautica 2 remains viable for a solo player, but its Early Access status means you are choosing a changing product even if you never use multiplayer.
If two to four people are deciding together
Subnautica 2 is the only documented match. Agree on the practical details before purchasing: which platforms each person uses, who will host, whether everyone is comfortable with unfinished content and how you will handle updates. “Up to three friends” describes the player’s group size, not a promise that every future activity will be balanced for the maximum party.

If one person wants co-op and another wants a finished game
This is a genuine trade-off rather than a setting you can toggle away. The group must decide whether shared play is worth Early Access uncertainty. If not, buy an established title for solo sessions and wait until Subnautica 2’s development state better matches your expectations.
Platform and edition checklist
Platform availability is not interchangeable between the three games. Use this checklist before checking out:
- Identify the exact device: PC, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. The cited records document different combinations for each title.
- Open the current regional store page: Confirm that the edition is sold in your country and runs on your console generation.
- Check multiplayer compatibility: For Subnautica 2, verify that your friends’ platforms are included in the current cross-platform support rather than relying only on a general label.
- Confirm the product state: Make sure the page says Early Access for Subnautica 2 and an established release for the other choices.
- Check account and cloud details: Steam lists Steam Cloud for Subnautica 2; do not assume that feature, save transfer or cross-save works identically on another storefront.
- Review the edition name: Avoid assuming that a bundle, console port or physical listing includes the same content as the digital edition you researched.
Prices, stock and bundle terms are regional and change over time, so they are not included here. The official Steam listing documents a bundle containing Subnautica and Below Zero; verify the current contents and availability before treating a bundle as the cheaper or more convenient option.

- You want the optional co-op and the listed cross-platform capability now.
- You are comfortable with planned additions to biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narratives.
- You will still consider the purchase worthwhile if the roadmap changes.
- Your group can tolerate patches and an experience that is not yet final.
Wait when any of these are true
- You want a complete story and settled progression on your first session.
- You dislike replaying or adapting after major updates.
- Your friends cannot agree on a supported platform combination.
- You are buying for someone who expects a finished console release.
Waiting is not a judgment on quality. It is a way to align the purchase with a finished-game expectation. Conversely, buying Early Access is reasonable when the development process and co-op access are part of what you want.

Which game should you play first?
- Choose your play mode. If online co-op is mandatory, go directly to Subnautica 2. If you will play solo, continue.
- Choose your tolerance for change. If you require an established release, select Subnautica or Below Zero. If you welcome an evolving game, Subnautica 2 remains an option.
- Choose your setting and device. Pick the original for the foundational solo experience, Below Zero for its colder-region follow-up or documented Switch availability, and Subnautica 2 for its newer multiplayer direction.
- Verify the current edition. Store support, platform compatibility and bundle contents can change; confirm them for your region before paying.
Recommended play orders
For a first-time solo player
Play Subnautica first, then Below Zero if you want the established follow-up. This order lets you begin with the series’ most established starting point and add the colder-region game afterward without making Early Access part of your introduction.
For a group of friends
Start with Subnautica 2 if the group’s defining requirement is shared online play. Decide in advance whether everyone accepts Early Access. If the answer is no, play one of the established games individually rather than expecting the earlier titles to provide the documented co-op feature.
For a Nintendo Switch owner
Below Zero is the documented choice among these records. Check the current Nintendo eShop or physical-edition listing for your region and confirm that the version you are buying is the intended release.

The original Subnautica is the least complicated test of whether the series’ solo survival format suits you. Move to Below Zero for a different established setting, or to Subnautica 2 only when its multiplayer and evolving-release model are part of the appeal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “2” means finished: Subnautica 2 is explicitly Early Access, so its numbering does not indicate a final product.
- Assuming every title has co-op: Only Subnautica 2 has the cited online co-op and cross-platform listing.
- Assuming a platform label covers every edition: Confirm the exact store, region and console generation.
- Using a final-content comparison that has not been established: No verified final biome, creature, craftable or story totals are available for Subnautica 2.
- Buying for a group without checking compatibility: Cross-platform multiplayer still requires the particular platform combination and current build to be supported.
- Treating a bundle as automatically available everywhere: The Steam bundle record does not establish equivalent bundle availability on another storefront.
Final verdict
For most first-time players, buy Subnautica and play it solo. It is the clearest, most established starting point. Choose Below Zero when you specifically want the colder-region follow-up or the documented Nintendo Switch option. Choose Subnautica 2 when optional online co-op for up to three friends and listed cross-platform multiplayer outweigh the uncertainty of Early Access. None of these is universally “best”; each is aimed at a different answer to the question of what you want from a survival game.
